Hi Madmaggie, hope you had a good time in Mexico. Can you please post more details about what medication you were given? Did it come in any packaging or have any brand name / active ingredients listed? What did the pharmacy say it was for?

The name on the bottle says they are called ciclobenzaprina clorhidrato. And they are 10ml yellow tablets and the company name on the bottle is pharma rx. I was advised by the pharmacist to take 1 per night to help me sleep.

Ok, the medication you have is called Cyclobenzaprine Hydrochloride (English translation) - which is classified as a muscle relaxer. Its main purpose is to relieve skeletal muscle spasms and it's also been used off-label for Fibromyalgia. Although I have also seen a number of anecdotal reports that it works really well as a sleep aid (probably due to sedative / drowsiness being reported as a main side effect), so it sounds like it's used off label in Mexico for this purpose. Have you tried any of the medication yet? If so, did it work well for you?

Im not sure if it did work as a sleep aid for me as i also take 20 mg of morphine twice a day and 25 mg of amitriptyline at night as well. I am prescribed these meds by my gp for severe osteo arthritis. So whether the medication i bought in mexico assists in helping me to sleep better or not, I'm unsure..

Sorry to hear about your osetoarthritis. Please note that if you are taking Amitriptyline then I would definitely stay clear of the Cyclobenzaprine since those two are known to have drug interactions. Specifically, Amitriptyline is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant, and the page for Cyclobenzaprine Details states "Tricyclic antidepressants may increase the chance of side effects", and "If co-administered with opioids [a.k.a. the Morphine you mentioned], the dose of one or both medicines should be reduced accordingly."

I think all in all you should definitely tell your doctor if you plan on trying a different medication that you got while traveling since you are already prescribed more than one medicine. They will probably tell you to dispose of the Cyclobenzaprine. I'm surprised (or not) that the pharmacist in Mexico did not ask what other drugs you are prescribed since they should have known there could be potentially dangerous interactions. I'm glad you told me about what else you are taking. I hope you stay health and safe Maggie! Please tell me you did not end up trying the Cyclobenzaprine since you posted last?? :O

Cheers

Many thanks for all the advice you have given me. I did stop taking the medication i purchased in mexico as soon as i got your first reply to my enquiry. I'm only taking the amitriptyline as it acts as a muscle relaxer at the low dose im on. So i see no benefit in taking 2 different types of muscle relaxants. I've had some problems with insomnia for quite a few years now. That was the only reason i took the cyclobenzaprine. So now its back to the drawing board to find something that would help with my insomnia, but would not contraindicate with my other meds.. once again thank you for your help.

You're welcome and best wishes in treating your insomnia! Have you explored some natural supplements in the mean time such as melatonin or chamomile?
