Side Effects Vs Neuro-cardiogenic Syncope

My son is 14 and has been taking Vyvanse for about one year now. His current dose is 60mg daily. Over the past 4 months he has been experiencing side effects that led doctors to think that he has Neuro-Cardiogenic Syncope also known as POTS (Postural Orhtostatic Tachycardia Syncope). So now on top of his Vyvanse he is now taking Toprol 25mg daily. His symptoms include rapid heart beat, dizziness, blurred vision, and chest pain. He had a TILT test performed and failed. But now after reading more, I think that these symptoms are all side effects of his medication. He participates in sports and can no longer get through a wrestling match without the symptoms so severe, he has to quit the match. Has anyone else had this?

I'm sorry to hear about what you and your son are going through. Based on my research, the symptoms you mentioned are side effects of Vyvanse and Toprol. I would definitely speak with your doctor about this and hopefully he can be prescribed a different combination of medications.

There are very few physicians that specialize in POTS. Especially pediatrics. My 15 years old started having symptoms of POTS over 2 years ago way before she was diagnosed with ADHD and started on Vyvanse. Make sure you see one of those physicians or consult with one before you just assume it is side effects of the medication. 14 is the most common age for POTS to start. It is a tough illness because it isn't so obvious. See thedysautonomiaconnection.org if you haven't yet. Hope he does okay. I definitely know what you're going through with both!
