Side Effects Following Prolia Injection (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am 60 yrs old and suffer from osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and myofascial pain syndrome. After discussing with my endocrinologist, I received my first injection of Prolia two days ago. Had diarrhea approximately 12 hrs later in the middle of the night. Awoke the next day with headache over entire head and face. That evening (12:30 am) I vomited approximately 10 times in succession. Awoke 5 hrs later with terrible pain and tightness from the top of my head down my neck, shoulders, and upper back. I am frightened to see where the pain will travel next, especially after reading the posts on this forum. Is there a drug out there to counteract the Prolia. I will definitely not be getting another shot in 6 mos. My doctor told me that the main side effect of this drug is worsening of skin conditions, such as eczema. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mary, how are you doing? Did you go back to your dentist? Some people on another thread here had to have braces put on their teeth to keep them in line where they are supposed to be and supposedly after the Prolia goes 'poof', some things can return to normal. Do not count month 6 as being pain free. It lasts in the body someway even though it is supposedly gone, it's damage is not. There is a lady on another thread that is having the same problems 2 years after the Prolia went 'poof'. Please let us know how you are doing. Be well~Pood

Hi Karen and welcome on behalf of all of us - the unfortunate victims of the poison called Prolia. You have had 2 inj's. of Prolia which makes your world really bad. Prolia makes arthritis feel like a great day - that's how horrid it is. I got a cataract from it too and had to fly to a big city to have it removed. How long does this Hell you are in last? Well, a lot of it depends on you as we are all different. I had pain meds and sleeping meds so that helped a lot. Also gave me Celiac Disease which left when it left. For me, I felt well in the 5th month just as Amgen, the manufacturer, said I would. I had my cataract surgery one day before my 'magic' day when Prolia is supposed to go poof. Well, unfortunately, the Prolia does go "poof' but the side effects from just one inj. can easily last 11 months. I was lucky. How did you feel before you had your second inj.? That will pretty much let us know what to expect will be coming. About all of my side effects are gone and we are tapering down on the sleeping meds.(almost 1 year). I lost 65 pounds while on Prolia and got down to only 100 and the body can get somewhat 'stuck' and not want to put on weight so I have to do my best to get all the calories in that I can. Now, back to you. Prolia LOVES Calcium so please take 1200mg morning and 1200mg evening or however you want to space them out. If it does not get the calcium it wants, that's when it starts in on our muscles as they contain calcium as the human body really is unable to store it. Keep with your Dr. and have your calcium level checked monthly. Make sure your calcium has the correct amount of Vitamin D in it too. Please tell every side effect you get to the FDA if you live in the US. Also, report them to Amgen as they are required by law to report what is reported to them to the FDA. I don't know for sure if you can have your cataracts removed until you are free of Prolia as it also takes down a large part of our immune system. It's such a simple procedure now they may do it but you would be on a lot of antibiotics for an extended period of time as you sure don't want to get an infection in there. It also depends on how bad they are. If you can see pretty well, put it off for as long as possible. If you have other questions, please ask. We, the survivors, are here for people like you and to also warn people to stay away from Prolia. It's chemo - bad drug. Tell your hubby to stuff it and stay in bed, rest and take good care of yourself. I know if you have RA too, it is best to move about some as the body needs to 'loosen' up. Be well~

Lois-
There is no antidote for Prolia. My journey approaches the year 2 mark 01/15/18. My best advice from experience is have a doctor who can manage all your side effects be your "contractor" as necessary side effect problems are subbed out. Your doctor needs to understand that Prolia is the root cause and treat side effects as such rather than new conditions, illnesses, diseases or whatever...
all need to be addressed but my crazy cough was not copd, my diareah not a GI issue needed colonoscopy and GI workup. My weakened urethra doesn't need surgery, and my gluten and milk sensitivies are not more than that - just worse... my muscle and bone pain is real. My fatigue is life stopping- help me treat the symptoms without going overboard as I wait for Prolia to leave my body.

On another thread -- Prolia side effects -- we just had news of another losing her life to Prolia. Skittie has been on this and there seems to be between 4000-5000 deaths caused by Prolia. FYI~

Lulu~Prolia is only for people for whom all the other drugs did not work. It is the drug of last resort - not first choice. It's printed in plain language on Amgen's site, the manufacturer of Prolia. Apparently, Drs. need to learn how to read. There are no ands, ifs, ors or buts about it. That is what the manufacturer wrote and means. Pood

Kitty~It's just a different thread owned by this site…Prolia side effects. I think it has a larger following than this one does but both contain good info that people need. I don't know how I got switched. Maybe just posted in an area I had not been in previously. We have a lot of really knowledgeable people on that one that have had numerous inj's. and lived to tell their stories. I feel like I'm back here repeating everything again. Also have one that got the broken femur while on first inj. I also posted an amazing one on how Amgen got Prolia past the FDA.

Thank you. I'm spent with pain. My lupus doc said I didn't have to worry about him taking me off. Since 6 months ago I was cut in half of my dose, half again and then now nearly nothing! Now that its been almost a month since my 1st shot of Prolia my hips and groin hurt really bad! When I saw him he gave me a few shots of steroid in the hips and said that he was not without sympathy, hr would give me a few 10 MG's. to help me thru. Insurance Co. rejected it and now he is sending me to a pain dr. Which would be fine but last time I went. it was a disaster! He said my doc didn't know what he was doing and berated him for 10 mins. My doc apologized and said he would never do that again to me but since this denial he made me an appt. W/ another one! Looked him up on health grades and he didn't get good reviews. I'm so tired of hurting more and more, Losing weight, no appetite, and ready to throw in the towel! I can't deal with this anymore! If these drugs were cheap, obody would be having problems getting what we need and the dose we need. Tired of it all!!!!

Of this was a med for a man with all the terrible side effects it would have been pulled from the market. Tell dr. And fill in form for the FDA

Lois~go to your Dr. and have your immunoglobulins checked. Prolia does a great job of messing them up and our total immune system. I think in that test you will find some info that will enable to Dr.(s) to help you more. Unfortunately for us, when Prolia is put in, it's in and there is no way to get it out. You may be able to get some help from an Immunologist too. We need an array of Drs. to get us thru Prolia. I had thought about plasma injections but my iga was totally off so it would have killed me. If your immunoglobulins are perfect, then you can have plasma to help boost your T-cells and T-cell helpers which are being killed by Prolia. That alone should make you feel much better.

I just kept bugging my Primary - and they would treat symptoms, sometimes naming something completely unrelated. He still won't admit I had a severe reaction to Prolia. They did put me on a 3 month watch and blood test schedule and send me to a pain specialist as I deveoped a severe case of bursitis of the hip, as well as nerve pain in my neck. My blood calcium stayed high and even went up on Prolia. Later found out I had a tumor on my parathyroid, which was causing a huge output of PTH (parathyroid hormone) and my body was in crises. Had surgery, tumor out, and I feel very good. Its been at least a two year journey from one Prolia shot - I still have skin issues. I tried everything, accupuncture helped pain. Finally had a procedure where they burn nerves with radiographic technology. Its bearable. In my case the osteoporosis was contributed to greatly by this, however I did suffer active Crohns Disease for a couple of decades, and the steroids did my bones no good, I'm sure. They said with Chrons in remission, and the tumors gone, I should have a good deal of bone density restored. A very long and expensive journey, not to mention my quality of life was not so good. Now I'm on six monthh watch with Primary. I was referred to an endocrinologist. Ha, I called him Dr. Devil. He was so weird. Both doctors were set on my taking Reclast because it helps osteoporoses and helps with cancer. That perked my ears up, and I said no, and started researching, and found that because of other symptoms and continued rising calcium levels I had the parathyroid tumor. For others it won't be that easy of a fix, though I feel as if I have been through hell.

Nikki~There is an alternative but it's difficult to get a Doc to Rx it because it's old and there is no money in it for them at all. It's Calcitonin a/k/a Miacalcitonin. It's made from salmon but has no fishy taste or smell. One spray in your nose is all is needed. Take good care of your nose and you will have zero problems. There is a very slight chance of basal cell carcinoma in the nose but the chances of that happening are so very small it's not really worth mentioning. My mother took it from ages 60-96 and I started on it after the horrid Prolia. It works. Had a bad fall on a hardwood floor on my hip and got up and kept on walking!! Probably the best place to get it would be from orthopedic Docs as they make their money with surgeries. Be well~

Lois-
There is no "antedot" for the prolia shot. I find that what has helped me most is dealing with the side effects seriously and with the help of specialists. The side effects are real and your complaints need to be taken seriously. I had my first shot January 3,2015. My story continues as does everyone posting here. Symptom support found here may help you- it has me.,. And sharing your journey helps others... take care... jan

Nikki~The only thing I know is that 500mg of Magnesium will keep the muscle pains down. Find a brand your body can tolerate. Get to a Rheumatologist and have your immunenoglobulins run. That will show what's going wrong with your body. If you get the skin problems, the only thing that helps that is Prednisone and be careful of it. Come off of it very, very slowly or your blood will go crazy and you will have worse problems than Prolia. Be careful where you go because your immune system is not working well now. Try to get someone else to buy groceries or have a store deliver them. Hopefully, with a Rheumatologist your worst symptoms will disappear. Some work with Immunologists. Take beyond excellent care of your teeth even if you feel horrid. For certain pains there is acupuncture and dry needling. They are close to the same thing except insurance pays for dry needling because it's from a Physical Therapist. Hopefully your Prolia journey will be a short one and an easy one to manage. If your heart seems off, get to a Dr. immediately and if you feel an unusual pain in your hip=ER. Be well~

I have been on Prolia for for years with no side effects. In fact I am delighted that it is the first osteo med to actually effect my bone density.
Have had osteoporosis since 2000, taking every med there is out there with no effect until the Prolia. Granted I have severe pain constantly from my broken arms and fused knees, so perhaps if the shot causes pain it is not noticable to me, but never had vomiting or anything else from my shot.
Meds react differently on different people so
Maybe you were just unlucky and I am fortunate but I would never give up my
Prolia shots!

Nikki~have you, yourself, looked up the side effects of this drug. it can cause bone cancer and hypercalcemia (too much calcium). Please check on it. Yes, I know they don't like Calcitonin because it's old and no one makes any money by prescribing it. Remember: The best patient is an informed patient so we don't want to go from horrid to bad. Be well~Pood

Lynx~did your teeth die at the gum line? That is from Prolia. True and simple. Prolia is a biologic so it has half lives. In 16 days 1/2 of the Prolia leaves your body, then in another 16 days 1/2 of the remaining half is deleted until only a monocle of Prolia is left in us. That does not mean in the least that the damage to the human body leaves when Prolia does. It causes major damage to a human body up to and including death. Please report all your problems to Amgen, the manufacturer who is bound by law to report it to the governing body of drugs in your country. If you are in the US it would be the FDA. You wonder what immunoglobulins are. They are a special blood evaluation that monitors extremely important information about or health, e.g., if AIg is down, it means you have Celiac Disease and the others are just as important as to your REAL overall health. You may want to do a net search on them and find out about them and how they tell the real truth of what's going on in your body. My immunologist helped stabilize mine so I could get well by the 6th month end of the one and only inj. of this poison. I personally believe Prolia has a little more of it's twin, Xgeva, in us that they don't want us to know. The twin is for treating cancer. That in itself may tell you many things going on in your body. If I can be of any more assistance, please let me know. Currently in the US there is only one legal suit against Amgen and it is for the broken femur. I'm beginning to believe the teeth dying at the root should also be included because it is such an impossibility while the whole top of the tooth is healthy and cavity free. Be well~

Poodle help me with this. My reaction to the prolia was a severe skin reaction. I can not use my beloved essential oils without an itchy rash occurring. I am 7 months out from my 3rd inj. So even tho the prolia is only one cell thick, does this mean i will always have skin sensitivities, as i react to other things i never had a problem with before? Thank you for your consistent presence on this site.
