Should I Increase Miralax Dosage?

Updated

I started taking miralax three days ago because of very bad constipation (impacted stool?) and two days later thankfully a long stool came out. But today when I tried to poop, nothing came out! Is there still impacted stool inside me? Did the miralax lose effectiveness? Should I increase the miralax dosage?

Hello, Tom! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problem you're having.

It would be best to stick with the recommended dosage, unless your doctor instructs otherwise.

Do you have any idea what's causing your constipation? Are you on any medications? Have you changed anything in your diet, recently?

The FDA lists the typical side effects of Miralax as possibly including nausea, bloating, abdominal cramping and diarrhea.

Pacman, how long have you suffered severe constipation? Weeks, months, years? Is Miralax the one and only remedy you've tried? Without knowing you, your diet or medical history it's difficult, however, I think your Dr should know the Miralax hasn't cured your condition. That said, there's several things you can do to improve your situation. First, drink water. Lots of room temp to very warm h2o. And add some sliced citrus fruit to the water. Secondly, prunes, the whole ones that come individually wrapped are delicious and work remarkably great for constipation. Your diet must include lots of green, leafy veggies. Fiber fiber fiber. Water, water, water. Senecot S, a still softener and the herb, senna is great and no horrible cramping. If you're REALLY truly compacted, impacted or whatever and the Miralax hasn't gotten you back on track there's a pretty great chance you'll need enemas, stronger laxatives and probable further medical intervention. Did your Dr take an xray of your bowel? Good luck and let us know how things work out!

Apparently I suffer from slow transit constipation as a result of eating spoiled food on November 23rd (I wrote down the exact day). It gave me diarrhea the next day and ever since Ive been constipated. I've never had any problems pooping before that. Now I can go without a bowel movement for a week or more.

I dont take any medications, and my diet is usually freezer food, hot pockets and the like, sandwiches. I pretty much ate anything I wanted. It never seemed to give me any constipation problems.

For this past month I've been taking miralax to help me go. At first it was working well. I would usually go on the third day after taking miralax for two days. Then after two weeks miralax seemed to be losing effectiveness. It took longer to work. About a little more than a week ago I took miralax for three days then the next day when it still wasnt working I took milk of magnesia to help me go. I don't know why the miralax is getting weaker. Maybe I'm building a resistance to it.

Currently I'm taking a double dose of miralax. I'll let you know if it works.

Tom, Have you ever shopped the PRODUCE dept at your local grocery store? There is life after frozen foods, ya know!? I mean, I think everyone should enjoy a frozen pizza or whatever once in a while! The produce department at my regular old neighborhood grocery has an entire wall devoted to pre-washed, pre-packaged salad fixins. Some include salad dressing and toppings for 1 person. You obviously have a microwave. A salad and baked potato/sweet potato is a scrumptious lunch or dinner!
I want to know what your Dr says when you see him/her today or tomorrow. Most will either close early Christmas eve or not open at all.
Please keep in touch here to let us know how things go over the next few days.
