Taking the Tramadol with the Gabapentin can cause an increase in depression of the central nervous system, so you should be careful to watch for any danger signs, such as shallow breathing, severe sedation and lowered heart rate.

How much of the Ibuprofen do you take?

Since you have high blood pressure, you also may want to discuss your use of it with your doctor, because taking high doses over a long period of time may cause elevated blood pressure and fluid retention.

I've been taking tramadol and Neurontin together for severe PHN for 16 years now. This is a result from nerve damage due to shingles, which put me in hospital for 17 days before they could figure out what was wrong. I take 4800mg of the gabapentin and 150 mg of tramadol. So far, no adverse effects. It works for me. The pIn is still there, just manageable. Hope this helps!

Gabapentin is actually a medication that can be used for Bi polar disorder and since depression is part of the mania it would not be logical to prescribe it if it did contribute to depression. As far as taking it in a cocktail w/ Tramadol for any spinal damage the answer is NO! Since everyone should have some type of health coverage, although spinal healthcare is also covered through government aid. Anyone truly suffering a debilitating spinal ailment, should have an MRI on their back w/ a referral from their PHP & available to take to a pain & spin specialist who will then be able to prescribe the appropriate medication on the initial visit. I assure you it will not be Tramadol especially once you inform him it does not work.

I took the question to be whether or not that specific combination of meds is bad. If you run them through a med checker it usually comes up as being a moderate risk. I've been taking 1600 mg Gabapentin, 150 mg Tramadol for 3 years (sometimes with Mobic, sometimes ibuprofin) for myofascial pain. My GP and the OD I was sent to for pain mgt say it's a safe combo. OP did say it was working for her.

I did want to address something. I worked for years as a Mental Health Case Manager, and part of my job was to take clients to their doctor, sit in, and help manage their medications. For what it is worth, I have never seen any of the Psychiatrists prescribe Gabapentin/Neurontin for bipolar disorder or any for of depression. I had clients on it with Fibromyalgia, and one I know took it for seizures but those were just on their lists, stemming from a gp. Even 17 years ago, when I was first hired as an ICM, there were effective meds out there for a bipolar or depression dx. That is an off label use. Gabapentin is only approved in the US
for the treatment of people with seizures. I personally wouldn't take that comment to task, and perhaps not seek help (for instance, should someone else see this) for Bipolar symptoms thinking this will address it. I know people sometimes take what is read on here at face value. No disrespect meant to the other poster.

I am prescribed gabapentin and zoloft, as my pdr. Said the combo is good for treating bipolar, along with klonopin for panic disorder, I also have Fibromyalgia, so am on tramadol right now too. I'm wondering if these are all safe together. I have a high opiate tolerance, and this far, tramadol seems to do nothing for it, I get more relief from higher doses of gabapentin than any tramadol, although it does keep off wds from the other opiates I was on for 3 months before the rheumatologist put me on tram. I'm waiting to see pain management in a week, as I've had bad reactionshape to other Fibromyalgia meds (savella) to be specific. I'm praying they'll switch me to a real opiate, than will actually manage my pain, and give me a life back again.

I was taking 3200 Gabapentin for severe neuropathy pain, and it affected my heart: beat erratically and too fast. It also made me very tired: feeling faint when going from sitting to standing. It made me clumsy. And it made me feel like my brain was floating above my head. I went down to 1600 during the day and 800 at night and the burning came back. Now I supplement with Cymbalta.

Gabapentin and Tramidol are often prescribed together for pain, just don't drink alcohol because there is a chance of depression of your breathing, NOT depression as in a depressed mental status. There's little risk if you don't drink alcoholic with your medication.

Have you tried Lyrica? We often refer to Gabapentin as the VW Bug and Lyrica as the Cadillac. Lyrica is newer but very effective for nerve pain. As with any drug there are side effects that you have to weigh. I've found that 100mg of Lyrica is equal to 600mg-1200mg Gabapentin. I take Lyrica regularly and add Gabapentin to it in the evening for sleep or when I have a bad flair. They can be taken together. You'll need your doctor to do a pre-authorization for Lyrica for your insurance most likely. Please talk to your doctor about adding Lyrica and taking less Gabapentin or stopping the Gabapentin, your doctor will know what's best for you. I have zero negative side effects from Lyrica where Gabapentin swells my hands and stiffens my joints so Lyrica is my main nerve medication. Please don't go by all of the complaints that you read about medications on here because it's mostly just negative feedback and complaints. People happy with their medications don't go out searching communities like this, you just don't hear from them so it's very one sided here. I'm trying to be the educated voice of reason. Talk to your doctor!

Yes, you're correct, seizure/nerve pain medications like Gabapentin and Lyrica is not given for depression as in, you're depressed. Can these drugs combined with other medications cause depression in your breathing or shallow breathing, yes it can but it's still subscribed together because it's not as big a risk unless you're also drinking alcohol or taking medications like Valium, Xanax, this would be a much greater risk. To say that doctors aren't prescribing them together because of moderate risk, well we sure see it prescribed often with Tramadol, Hydro, Soma for many pain patients. Quality of life means something. Many of these patients would not do well without them. Now I have seen some patients that had to do sleep studies (after they take all of their meds) for suspected obstructive or central sleep apnea's and they either had zero problems or obstructive sleep apnea which is not caused by these medications. We would expect to see more central apneas and shallow breathing since there is a risk but we just didn't see them. I know a lot of pain patients on various pain meds like Tramadol, Hydro, Percocet, with Gabapentin and/or Lyrica, this combination of meds is what brings them relief. Pain meds alone don't do much for nerve pain that's why these meds are often prescribed together even with the known risk involved. Some of these pain patients would rather go home to Jesus than have someone take their pain and nerve medicines away, like I said quality of life is everything to a chronic pain patient. There are several on-line medication interaction checkers but they don't tell the whole story. The original person who post her concern should talk to her doctor if she has any problems with what her Dr. prescribed her.

Are you second guessing what your Doctor put you on? You should discuss it with your doctor if you have concerns about your medication combinations and with your pharmacist. These medications have been taken together but you should talk to your doctor since you are worried about it.

Hydrocodone never did take my leg misery chronic pain away...I used to be extremely...active, however, these leg cramps I get have taken my life over. I took Savella for 3 weeks for depression. And for at least 2 of those weeks I contemplated suicide. I finally told a friend what I was thinking and she asked if I was on any new meds. I told her Savella. I immediately stopped taking it and the suicidal thoughts went away. If anyone is on Savella and has any unusual symptoms, talk to your doctor right away.
