Short Term Opiate Use: Help!!!

Updated

Hi, I'm a 21 year old female. I was going through a terrible time about a month ago after losing my mother in a car accident. I started taking percocets (10/325) to keep me level headed and motivated enough to get through work, eat, go out and basically function. It got to the point where I was taking probably 4 a day. These past 4 days I have managed to cut it down to a less than half a pill a day (around 2-3 mg's). I take it in the morning because that's when my stomach wakes me up in pain. I've been doing good at this reduced dosage. Today i am experiencing minor w/d symptoms, even after my dose, but I fear it'll get worse and I'll have to call out of work for a couple days (potentially losing my job because of the upcoming holidays). I really want to kick this as I am not mentally addicted to them. 3 weeks taking them = 1 week tapering? Someone please help! I don't want to take them anymore, not even to feel better but I have work and I can't be throwing up. I'm not use to this and I'm doing the bare minimum just to feel stable. The stomach pain is the worst so far. Diarrhea setting in. Was tapering a good idea? Will it even make a difference? I want to make this as easy as possible. Thank you for any advice you may have for me!

My condolences no one could ever expect you to be level headed dealing with a horrific accident like that. I lost my son in a similar tragic auto collision many months ago and the symptoms of grief stress and discomfort still are present. Honestly there is no easy way to taper down from Percocet the symptoms you listed will increase as you titrate down further. OTC preps like Imodium and pepto bismal may assist with gastro discomfort but only a skilled medical professional can prescribe more effective rxs. Those who go cold turkey inevitably return to the rx of use THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS BUT VERY FEW.withdrawing without medical support is dangerous because of underlying medical issues or conditions that may be magnified by this narcotic abstinence process. Please seek medical advice to assist you in this very critical time. God speed, Kenie

Has there been any change?

While withdrawal symptoms are normal, stomach pain is rarely one of them, according to the information provided by the NIH, so if you are still experiencing it, you should have it checked out by your doctor.

Sameoldbs has offered some helpful suggestions, if your doctor approves of your trying such over the counter products.

I am very sorry about the loss of your mother.
