Seroquel And Rls

Updated

I had been on a lot of opioid medication for several years and Seroquel at night for sleep. Two years ago I got off the pain meds but continued the Seroquel. Over the course of a couple of of months I developed worsening involuntary twitching and jerking of my legs at night. One afternoon I sat down to pay some bills and couldn’t even see right or sit still. I went to ER and they gave me some Ativan which put me back to normal for a few hours.
The same symptoms continued. I looked back thru my daily journal and figured out the twitching and jerking started about 30 min after I took the Seroquel at night.
I stopped the Seroquel for 6 nights and the movements went away. I took it on the 7th nite and it all came back with a vengeance. I stopped the Seroquel and have not had the problems since.
None of my Drs admit to ever hearing of these side affects.
Wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this.

Unfortunately, most doctors do not know all the possible side effects of any given medication, they do not study them as much as most pharmacists, or researchers. While some doctors do take the time to learn as much as they can, not all of them do.

The answer is yes, the FDA does warn that Seroquel/Quetiapine can cause such issues as a side effect, along with nausea, weight changes, mood changes, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

I take the generic for Prozac, which is Fluoxetine, and it causes me similar issues, but with time, it has gotten better, so they don't occur as frequently as they used to, I'm dealing with those wonderful perimenopause symptoms, and this medication is likely the only reason I've not driven my poor husband completely insane. LOL

If your doctors aren't looking into it, it might be time to consult a different doctor to be sure. I'd suspect RLS, except for the fact that you said stopping it alleviated the symptoms, so that means it was most likely the medication...... but I am not a doctor, so I can only give an opinion.

Are you on any other medications?

No other meds. Seroquel was definitely the culprit. When I was in the hospital getting off the pain meds they switched me to Trazadone and I had similar issues. Drs kept telling me it was withdrawal which I knew wasn’t true 3 months later. When I stopped Seroquel the problems went away immediately. Finally had a Dr admit that the Seroquel was causing the problems and that the pain meds had masked it when I was on them.

I don’t know why you’re telling me to not stop Seroquel but I did 2 years ago and have not had the problems since. Before I figured out it was the Seroquel causing all of the issues I had been prescribed Mira something and the carbidopa-levodopa neither of which helped. The Seroquel was prescribed only for sleep why would you tell me not to stop it?
