Seeking A Doctor For Pain Relief

I am seeking a doctor, for one that will listen and not just try to rush through the visit. I have severe problems with my lumbar3, 4 and 5. Also have Fybromyalga and migraines. Because of the pain I am also severely depressed. It's been about 17 years that I have not had one day without pain. One of my biggest fears is having the doctor think I'm out just to seek the drugs. That is not the case. I'm currently taking Norco, Vicodin and Cymbalta 30MG but it's like getting my doctor to pull a tooth. My main thing is she won't listen. She is only in the office on Fridays and the PA will not refill my medications.

Unfortunately, no one can really know ahead of time what a doctor is or is not willing to prescribe, as that is based on the doctor's discretion and not on someone else's previous appointment (especially since many doctor's are now worried about losing their licensing for prescribing too many narcotics).

Some advice I can give you is to not specifically ask for any 'specific medication' when you see a new doctor. Just make sure to transfer or take a copy of all your medical records with you. Then, the best approach in my opinion, is to discuss up front and honestly what has or hasn't worked for you in the past. Most doctors will take it under consideration and hear you out if you approach them in this manner. I believe a lot of patients don't get the medication they need because they are approaching the doctor in such a needy way that they are being viewed as addicts or junkies and not patients. So as awkward as that may seem, it is something to consider and be made aware of, because sadly enough, that is how many rudimentary doctors tend to think.

Many of the results you find (in one or both of the links above) also list a phone number for that specific doctor; I'd consider calling up a number of them to see if they are accepting new patients; some aren't, but most usually are.

Hi Jenna you are absolutely correct in how patients should know by now to act... The primary link you entered no longer exists. I am a 57 year old woman in pain management for 23 years suddenly without a pain management Dr. As my Dr. Passed away and my PCP is subject to the new federal prescribing laws. I'm having a very difficult time finding a new specialist in Virginia because I had been prescribed Methadone 10mg pills at 9 a day. Most Dr's. Won't even accept anyone who was on methadone. I would never touch it again due to the horrible withdrawal I just went through. If you know of another search option
