Savella; Too Big A Risk To Experiment With My Health?

Having been experimented with and suffered daily side effects of many other drugs to deal with fibromyalgia and related pain disorders; I am reluctant after reading the others reports of increased insomnia, severe sweats, nausea to the point of vomiting, not to mention increased blood pressure and heart attack risks. I have got to be my own best advocate and exercise caution. This is a relatively new drug on the market and notice that it is being recalled in Europe. Would like to hear others thoughts on this subject.

Laurie. I too am a Fibro/CFS patient of 22 yrs, and have tried practically 'everything' under the sun. I was given samples of Savella, in a packet from my doctor. I brought it home, and proceeded to read EVERYTHING I could find on this med. I am very sensitive to most meds, and I decided after all my research, that I would not try this one. I like to be a partner with my doctor in regards to what meds I will and will not take. So, I took it back to him and told him why I would not use it. There are just too many side effects. Serious ones. I've also had probs with SIX different anti-depressant, in my long search for meds that might help. And this is a newer type of meds in that field. Keep us posted. Jan

From what I am finding, a recall for it in Europe hasn't actually happened, yet.

However, due to some serious problems it has been causing, there are some agencies that think it should be pulled from the market.

The main issue is how it affects some people's blood pressure. It has been known to cause it to soar to dangerously high levels, which returned to normal when the person stopped taking the medication.

It has also been shown to increase heart rate and suicidal thoughts.

Savella contans the active ingredient Milnaciprin, which is an SNRI antidepressant and this class of medications is known to increase suicide risk in some people that use them.

Common side effects may include: nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations and elevated blood pressure.

Not everyone experiences all the side effects of any given medication, but if you are sensitive to medications in this class, then there is a much higher likelihood that you could have problems with it.

Does anyone else have any comments or questions?

I was given Savella from my family doctor. I started the tritration pack and was extremely nauseated at first. I then started having an increased heart rate and shortness of breath. I contacted my doctor and was told that the symptoms would probably subside. After two weeks of only taking 12.5mg, I increased the dosage to 25mg at bedtime. I absouletly thoughout I was going to die. My heart rate was so high that I could not even keep up with counting it. I could not breath and had to wake my husband. I was sure my heart was going to explode. I was afraid to go to the hospital because, being a nurse, I knew that I would be given more meds and they would possibly kill me, lol. I literally prayed all night and just waited for it to wear off. I stopped taking it after that. I am disappointed because it did help my pain and fatigue and felt that I had a new lease on life. With that said, it is just not worth damaging my heart.

I have been on savella for about 2 months. Tonight I have begun to get off of it gradually. At first I thought it was helping the fibro, but now I don't think so. I wish I never started this drug. Savella has too many bad side effects for me!!!!

You are very smart. I don't know if you are on any other meds or not but this is what happened to me. I just got out of the hospital with a drug interaction. I take an anti depressant, prozac, which boosts seratonin. I was taking 150 mg per day of Savella which, unknown to me, also boosts seratonin. I was also on tramadol and trazadone which do the same thing. So, I had and over abundance of seratonin and my body just went haywire. It is called seratonin syndrome. It is very scary and I have not recuperated from it yet because the meds stay in your body for a while depending on which meds it is... I am off tramadol, for fibro and arthritis, off celebrex. I want to just quit taking the savella, but I am weaning off of it slowly. Because my primary doctor, my psychiatrist and rhuematologist did not pay attention to what each of them prescribed and did not bother to look at the side effects of each, am suffering greatly.

I have been on Savella for over 2 months now with limited side affects that subside after 1 or 2 days. It is also helping with my IBS.

I am happy for you. It really helped me with fibro pain, but the side effects were too much. Now that I am off Savella, my trigger points hurt when touched, but no flare ups so far.
