Remeron (mirtazapine) With Diapam (diazepam)

I am 52-year-old man. I take Remeron (Mirtazapine) for anxiety and depression. I started to use this medication about one week ago. I take the medication in the evening. I read in the patient information leaflet that I should not drink alcohol. How many hours after I take the medication is it safe to drink? Sometimes I drive to work by car. When I had the medication dispensed in the pharmacy, they said that the medication can cause drowsiness. Can I drive If I use this medication? I also use Diapam(Diazepam), is it safe to take these medications together?

I would be more concerned with combining valium and stimulants. I admit it is no longer the 1980s'! I would not recommend driving after taking remeron. The alcohol when moderated well is a guessing game. You have to try it before you buy it. I would not recommend driving under the influence of alcohol.

I think the best solution is to time your alcohol consumption. If you take 3 drinks wait three hours before the remeron.

When you mix diazepam into the mix I would offer concern. If I were a professional I would first ask how many dwi/dui that you have etc....

A glass of wine has not killed me yet, but you are not me :)

There really is no safe time to drink alcohol, when taking these medications, since they can all cause depression of the central nervous system. That means that combining such medications with alcohol could result in increased sedation, lowered heart rate, lowered breath rate, and increased dizziness, which could be dangerous, perhaps even fatal, if rates drop too low.

As to driving, it depends on how the medications affect you, you should wait a little while to see, before driving while on them, in case they cause too much dizziness, or drowsiness, for you to drive safely.

The FDA also warns that Diazepam carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and irritability.

Thank you for the more responsible and sobering answer. Yes combining alcohol with diazepam can lead to death. You will not likely notice it, worse the EMTs won't either. They'll do the alcho-tester and think you are drunk. This is why Librium is not used anymore in the hospitals... sigh, not so simple.
