Refilling 10mg Oxycodone Ir Prescription In A Different State

Updated

I will be in Santa Paula, Ca when my 10mg oxycodone ir comes due for refilling. Can my pain management doctor in Arizona (at Integrated pain management) give me a written prescription that I can get filled in California?

It depends on state law and the pharmacy you will be using. I work for a chain that follows it to the "letter" of law. I live in NC and we get people on vacation from out of state. We can accept out of state Rx for pain meds. BUT we HAVE to contact a Dr when their office is open & verify the Rx before we can fill it. 2 suggestions- contact the pharmacy you think you might use where you will be vacationing & ask them their policy. Also if they accept electronic Rxs. Other option is electronic Rx (not fax-not email). Some Dr offices can send an Rx electronically to a specific pharmacy (not all offices do it with controlled Rx's). Dr's could send the Rx directly to the pharmacy where you will be vacationing.

I also live in NC & you can not have an e-script for a Schedule 2, such as oxycodone. It has to be on paper, original ink signature from the doctor. It's always been that way whether chain pharmacy OR Mom & Pop. I have been in pain management for 13 years. Have to travel and make an overnight trip out of my visits to pain management in NC.

I have been on pain management for 20 years and used to be it was no problem taking your script to a chain pharmacy in another state, especially if you have used them often in your home state. A couple of years ago I tried doing this during the holidays because I like to spend a couple of weeks with my mom and dad. The chain pharmacy in my parents town (that I have used in my home state for nearly 17 years) refused to fill it. According to them, the pharmacist on duty must be comfortable filling it and if not they don't have to. I was so upset and was forced to cut my trip short and go home. This year I will have to have my script filled 10 days early so I already checked with my pharmacy, Doctor, and insurance company and all said it was fine to fill them at home and take them with me. Otherwise I would be staying home. It is just criminal how difficult things have become for pain management patients. I am wondering just how bad it is going to get.

Ah yeah. The old pharmacy / pharmacist is comfortable on filling it. Here is a quick sorta story that will blow your mind. I was in a chain pharmacy that was 1.5 miles from my doctors office. The script was perfectly written. Pharmacist calls the doc office from memory. Doc verified she wrote it....... Pharmacist messed around 45 minutes then had me paged for return. To which she started SCREAMING at me.... so I just stood their and let her make a complete ass of herself. Other customers were looking at her and leaving. I never said a word. It's fun to watch someone have a self inflicted meltdown all by themselves.
Had i had said anything she could have made me look really bad. So I just stood there silently, returned to my doctors office with the script because she had written ALL over it like a child or something. Now I interview my perspective pharmacists...... for everyone that thinks that sounds a bit strange, think of it like this....... Do you want to give your money to someone that respects you and your business and money or would you rather be treated like trash and reward the pharmacy with your money. Pay the pharmacy to disrespect you? Naw....Your pm doctor was smart and very accommodating to do that for you. Be proud you have a great doctor....... many folks do not and have to jump through hoops just to get an 800mg ibuprofen.... Have a great trip and a happy holiday season with one less thing to sweat about. Enjoy yourself and be safe!

Wow! While a pharmacist has never done that type of thing to me, I have seen posts where others report the same sort of thing. Really smart of you to just be quiet and let her look like she was coming unhinged. Not a good thing for a pharmacist to be! I also think you have a good idea as far as interviewing your pharmacist. It is so important to have a good one and that you both have trust in each other. Like it or not, they now have the final say as to whether you get the meds your doctor wants you to have.

Yes, I do have a really good PM doctor. When I explained to him why I was uneasy about trying to take a script for a CII med out of state, he had no problem writing it early. He was the one to suggest that I call the insurance company and clear it ahead of time so I would have no surprises on the day we were to leave town. I just got back yesterday and had a fantastic time.

Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!!

I've had to travel out of state to get a script from doctor in that state and fill it in that state. New York and New Jersey have what they call, "reciprocity" which means if you're caught doctor shopping in either state, YOU will be reported. That said, ALL of this is horses*** because there are ways around it - you just have to be smart about it.

Probably not. California has (or used to have anyway) specific rules about how the prescription is written. Docs there had the extra information printed on their prescription pads, and doctors in some states don’t need the extra nonsense on there so they don’t write it. In those cases pharmacists in California can’t fill those scrips. Arizona may know and do it that way too, but Mass didn’t so I couldn’t fill my Adderall out there.
