Recently Tsh Was 15.27 - Uneasy About Taking Levothryoxine

Updated

My MD just prescribed 25 mcg levothryoxine for my hypothyroidism. I am really uneasy about taking any synthetic drugs. I would like to try Armour Thyroid but he said it is harder to adjust and reserved for patients who can't tolerate levothyroxine. He advised I see another MD if I didn't want to try the levothyroxine. I'm not sure what I should do.

Hi! My TSH is quite regularly over 100 (no joke!) Go to an endocrinologist if you can. TSH doesn't tell the whole story; you need free T4, free T3 also at the very least. And the thing about Armour thyroid being harder to adjust is BS. Armour has both T4 and T3 in it, and the endo will start you at a relatively low dose, re-check in 4-6 weeks, and adjust from there. My doctor made the same claim as yours, but I've done research. I told her "2 grains, 120 mg." I've been on it 40 days and with no other changes in my life, I'm down 30 pounds. I see my endo in a month. Good luck!

@Lettucepry,

Taking into account that you feel uneasy about Levothyroxine and synthetic drugs in general, have you considered talking with your doctor about any natural ways to improve thyroid function? I just finished reading an article by Dr. Oz on several ways to boost thyroid function, that entail: working out/walking every day for at least 40min per session; taking a quality multivitamin (containing high levels of iodine, selenium, zinc, vitamin B, C, D, & E); Guggulsterone; Omega-3's; amino acids; and food sources of iodine..to name a few.

To my knowledge there are also a variety of different thyroid-regulating supplements available at health food stores like WholeFoods and Vitamin Shoppe. Perhaps a worker there can help you narrow down some other options in the realm of non-synthetic alternatives.
