Questions About Oxycontin 20mg & It's Equavalentcy..

Updated

Hi..I am currently taking OxyContin 20mg 3xdaily, Percocet, Zanaflex, Neurontin & Trazodone for the chronic pain that I've been suffering for for over 13 years.
It's a debilitating illness (RSD/CRPS) and has only gotten worse over time. Now it effects every single part of my body. I can't increase the OxyContin because it is not avail in generic and I can't afford to continue to pay out $475 every mth for 90 pills so I need to find something that will help relieve the pain just as good as the OxyContin, if not better. Any opinions?!? (The OxyContin is the best pain med that has helped my pain & so thankful my pain management doctor suggested it...tho it bugs me that I can't increase it bc of the price)
I am also quite nervous about stopping them because of withdrawls. If I miss my pill because I overslept, I wake up in withdrawl symptoms. Is there a way to get over these withdrawl symptoms when beginning a new med?!?
I've tried just about every medication out there in the past. When I detoxed off my meds in Nov 2012, so I can start out fresh, I detoxed off 75mcgs Fentanyl patch & Demerol. I've been on prior to the detox: Morphine, Kadian, MS Contin, Opana (I found that the morphine didn't help), Methadone.
Maybe I detox again so I can start out low and build up my tolerance again? I am running out of options and ideas which is why I am lucky to have found this website. I appreciate all if any information, suggestions, etc.
Thank you!
PS...I always do my own research and then speak to my pain management doctor. I just like to be knowledgeable and prepared at my appointments.

Unfortunately, Oxycodone and Fentanyl are pretty much the strongest narcotic opiates that are available.

The only other I can think of that may be worth trying would be Buprenorphine, which is available by itself, or coupled with Naloxone. However, with the Naloxone in it, you wouldn't be able to use any breakthrough medications, since it neutralizes them.

Learn more Buprenorphine details here.

It's available in both a name brand and a generic, but I'm not sure what the prices are in your area.

You may want to ask your doctor about a medication vacation, some doctors support that idea. It's basically where you detox off of them, just as you've stated, to avoid building up a tolerance. Then, when you go back to them, you do a 'vacation' regularly, such as every few months you take just a couple of days off.

Does anyone else have any ideas to add?

Honey if you are on that much medicine I would think that you should not be in any pain.I was on hospice and they had me on that much meds and the same kind because of cancer and two back surgeries and I knew what hospice eas and the meds made me sleep all.the time so I got off all of that and went into a pain managent center to yreat my pain so I.could enjoy my grandkids and I would suggest that you get off all that meds because you might overdose and get in a pain center that will treat your pain the right eay.I have been through everything that you have but I want to be able to walk b around and not sleep all the time.I.will be praying for you.

Try Suboxone, it's a great pain medication that has been used for pain in other countries for years. 1mg = 15mg of morphine.

Re: Katie (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I was on way more than her, 80mg of Oxycontin x3, 10mg x3 for break thru pain, Klonopin, Ambien, Flexeril, etc. and I was still in pain. That's what Oxycontin does, spreads your pain everywhere. I tried the patch too.
