Resolor, which contains the active ingredient Prucalopride is used to treat chronic constipation.

Increased hunger and appetite is not listed as a side effect, however, it does have an effect on the brain chemical seratonin, just as many antidepressants do and most of them do cause increased appetite and weight gain.

Its common side effects are listed as: headache, abdominal pain, nausea and worsening diarrhea.

Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

Hi Gus

Are you in the US? I know some Dr's in US are prescribing this even though it is not yet approved here. I have had CC for 8 years and my only relief was when I was on Zelnorm. I am tyring to locate a doctor to see who would be willing to work with me.

How long does it take for Resolor to work? A couple of doses (I have 2mg tabs)? A week? I also saw someone said it doesn't work unless you "clean out" first. True?
Thank you to anyone who has info

Have been on resolor tabs for 14 days with no real relief from constipation. Tried to increase the dose to 2mg after 4 days and took a lot of fruit and vegetables then had a very loose bowel motion. After that have not had proper bowel motion and have gone back to laxatives. Don't know if I have given it enough time, my Dr only gave me one months supply. Am in UK.

HelloI have suffered with chronic constipation for over 10 yr . had quiet a lot of investigations and not really had a full answer yet, they have done a recent test called transit study which showed that i have a very low transit and i was told i have damage to the gut. This may have been done during my Cesarian section ten years ago ??? I have been put on resolor for the last 28 days (i have to continue for a whole month). As of yet i don't think its very effective. I do have looser stools when i go but its not regular at all. I do have a lot of gas build up and ofter burp excessively after food, say around every few days but not every single day. iv had that for many years so might not be the new medication. I am next having bio-feed back and a further test in my rectum not sure what its called its like a balloon which checks mussel tones I really don't know what is next i just want to be normal has any one els had any different tests or treatment. Oh and iv had cameras up to check for polyps this was seven years ago and nothing was found.

I have the same problem. I have been taking Prucalopride for three weeks and I'm really hungry all the time. They are helping with the constipation but I may have to stop taking them because I'm literally eating double the amount I used to since I started taking them. I've tried really hard to eat less but it's impossible to control my appetite.

I know you wrote this quite a while ago but I was wondering if you stopped taking the drug and if you did, did your hunger return to normal? I have been taking it for 6months and I have gained 20 pounds. I feel hungry all the time. No amount of self control seems to help. Any info you could share would be much appreaciated, Cheers!

Hi, I am in UK. I have had CC for 16 years now and had every test that is available in the UK (I think) to try to see what is causing it. I have been told by one doctor a few years back that I just had a 'lazy bowel' 2 weeks ago I was put on Resolor 2mg. I kept a diary of my motions and, to be honest, it is rubbish. I still have use other ways to go. I know I need to go and can feel it there but unless I physically open my rectum myself and ease it out to start it off I can not go. (although for me to get to this point I must take a laxative of some sort, normally more than prescribed)
The Resolor 2mg does not make me hungry, but it must help hold water or something else because I was on a diet for the first week of taking it, and I was very good indeed, however when I got on scales week later I had put on 4//b!!!
I am also very moody, snappy and my patience is wearing thing quickly. Anything can start me in a mood, and that is not been me for a while now. I am also on Sertraline for my depression and mood swings but the Resolor seems to be counteracting the Sertraline.
I have today, 29/05/13 decided to stop taking the Resolor It really is not doing anything for my toilet needs at all and is causing atmospheres at home because of my moods.
I just want to be able to go to the toilet like a 'normal' person. If I do not take anything I could go days and still not go. Once I have taken something and I empty the toilet becames a 'no go' area because of the smell. I also bleed a lot. This I have been told is because of my haemorrhoids but again I have had these injected 3 times and rubber banded once - still doesn't make them go.
Because I have to take such a large amount of laxitives to relieve myself I am housebound quite a lot of the time - I could pass wind and it will pour out and it stinks like fish. I have given up buying new underwear, I now wear Tena lady pants.
I am 44 year old female and have had enough of all of this. It affects my whole family. We could be just walking out the door to go somewhere and I just have to go (after laxatives) and that would be it, I could be on the toilet for hours. Even if we are not going out it causes friction because I am always in the bathroom/toilet and everyone else needs to use it too.
I would love to hear from anyone that is having the same/similar problem and maybe advise me on something I do not yet no about.

Noni, I kept taking the tablets and eventually my appetite went back to normal. It takes a few weeks.

Whiskey18, it took a few weeks for the tablets to start working for me so maybe you just need to try them for a bit longer. Once they got going they worked really well. My appetite has finally gone back to normal so maybe your side effects will disappear after a while too.

Whiskey18, I am a little Similar to you, i was told i had a lazy bowel and to take fibre, lose weight, workout, prune juice etc, i did all the above i got so impacted i was afraid i was going to vomited out poo! I was put on movical and i couldnt leave the house in fear id need a loo. So i did research and i use a water enema, 3 days a week depending on the amount of food i have eaten.
My Doctor has now put me on 2mg of Resolor started on the 5 june 2013 and now four days later nothing, so last night i had to use the water enema and i feel great today.
But like others i am starving all the time and its not for proper food its for junk food.
I dont think the tablets will work for me, besides my chronic constipation and unable to go naturally having to resort to Enemas, there has to be a part of my bowel that doesnt get notified that i have to go!

I'm glad it's not just me that's having the problem with 'hunger pangs'. I've been taking Prucalopride for 6 weeks now and whilst it is achieving results on the bowel movement front(more than half of my bowel doesn't function) I am eating more than normal and have gained 5lbs!!! I mentioned this to my consultant last week and he didn't seem too concerned and just said it wasn't a side effect of this drug. It has to be more than coincidence that so many of us are experiencing this problem. I know it's early days and hopefully things will settle down-I am also experiencing severe stomach rumbling and 'swimmy' heads(sometimes making me feel nauseous). At least all the awful side effects I experienced in the first 48hrs have vanished. I still think there is so little known about this drug, that only time will tell as to what the potential side effects could be. For me,it is achieving the required results, for now at least. I just hope this continues,as I have read that in many cases, its efficacy is reduced over time. Any one else's personal experiences would be most welcome.

I just started a day ago and I have headaches and horrible abdominal pains. I take klysma's every four days to have some sort of constant bowel movement and my bowel reacts extremely to every sort of laxative (and fibre) with cramps. Bisacodyl isn't an option on daily base because of that pain. Forlax and Movicolon aren't enough with even 13 sackets a day.
Pain isn't listed as a side effect, but I get the feeling half of the side effects aren't listed....

What's your thought?

I've been taking 2mg prucalopride daily now for over a year. Thinking about it I did have increased hunger to start with but as it coincided with everything working better the hunger didn't really register. I think it took 2-3 months for the full effects to kick in. I have obstructed defecation along with slow transit constipation and prucalopride has made a huge difference to my quality of life. Occasionally nowadays I find that things get a little loose so I miss a day and get back on track again. It can cause wind as well which does cause pain.

If I take laxatives as well, which I had to do for surgery and tests, it messes my system up again. The temptation to take laxatives is huge sometimes but prucalopride will get there given time. I hope I'm never in a position where they refuse to prescribe it for me

I am on day three of prucalopride . No motion yet but it is helping me pass wind which I was unable to do . How long before I get a bowel movement ? My rectum is empty at the moment which is the problem I have . My waste does not seem to move down the last part of my bowel to the rectum . Should I take laxative to clear me ? Any help please. Dr said lazy bowel. Have had diagnostics done to rule out nasties

Yes, I too feel hungry after a meal but the tablets have been a blessing for me and made life so much better. I just drink boiled water to help the hunger pains.

I'm really hungry as well. If you keep taking it for a while it goes away. I've been off it for a month because I ran out. It definitely works the best for me but always makes me so hungry at first. I'm also dieting right now so I'm staying even though it's only 3:30 in the afternoon. Also when I first started I was hungry and eating a lot but I actually lost weight so I think it's ok. Like I said it should calm down in a bit also if you don't need it don't take it. I only need it a couple times a week to clear me out. So a box usually lasts me several months.

Hi carole, I know this was years ago but for others reading this thread. It is different for everyone but just depends on how much waste are in your pipes and how severe the nerves are damaged in your intestines. I've been taking prucalopride for 5 years and im staring constantly. I will try to skip a meal somedays but its nearly impossible. I've put on over a stone in weight and I have to skip some days even a week sometimes because it depresses me with the constant mood swings and the hungar prangs.

I try to alternate, so maybe take every other day and break on the weekends.

I can't stop eating too - it's so embarrassing and depressing to put on weight.

It causes constipation as it is hard to control what types of food I eat when taking the tablets.

Go back to your doctor as they are quite damaging as your bowels will rely on them and they will definitely not work when you stop.

I've been on it for over a year and i have to train twice a day in the gym as i can't stop eating. I can't stop thinking about food and i literally can't control what and how much i'm eating. It is leading me to depression if i'm honest as I can't afford to buy new clothes and i have definitely put on over 14 pounds.

Hi all! Glad I came across this thread. I'm 24, had chronic Constipation since I was 2. I have an ace stoma, and was also put on prucalopride about 4/5 years ago. It's always worked well for me, sometimes within 20 minutes, other times a couple of hours. Sometimes it will stop working as well, but I have my stoma to fall back on.
I too, have experience an increased appetite. Though it's not everytime I take it. I'm not due to see my doc yet, so I haven't mentioned it to him, but it's good to know I'm not the only one to experience this!

Has anyone had trouble trying to lose weight on this?

Re: jac2006 (# 21) Expand Referenced Message

Hi. Glad I saw your post. I had tried changing my routine when after 8 months the tablets stopped working. I did see that there was no evidence of a benefit in increasing the dose but after 2 days, with 1 in the morning and 1 at night I'm ecstatic to see results!

Guessing it's going to be an ongoing learning experience as the body gets used to this product, I'm feeling a need to keep changing my meds to prevent my body becoming immune to it again....

Looking forward to my next biofeedback appointment! :)
