Prozac Side Effects

Updated

I was on 10mg and just went up to 20mg 5 days ago. My jaw hurts, sinuses are blocked and my mouth feels sore like I ate too much salt. I also feel foggy and off. Is this normal? How long will this last?

Yes, I can assure you both that such side effects only last for a few weeks, it was about 3 weeks for me, whenever I adjusted my dosage. They do improve and eventually go away completely. If they don't, then it might not be the right medication for you.

Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight loss.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thanks for the information! I dropped down to 15mg tabs and my depression and the jaw/sinus issues are better but my anxiety seems to be worse. It's awful!! Hoping this will even out over time. Any advice on this?

Yes, it usually does aggravate anxiety for a short period of time, but you should experience an improvement, soon.

When I started taking it, it hit pretty bad about the 2nd and 3rd week, then finally eased off.

How are you feeling?

Not good! I have had 3 major anxiety attacks in the past 4 days. My dr increased to 20mg on Monday and I literally feel crazy with my anxiety. I haven't felt like this in years. I'm hoping to stick it out over the next week and see if it improves. If not, I may switch to lexapro. It's really frustrating trying to find the right meds :(

In many cases, with these types of medications, that worsening of symptoms at the beginning could mean that it's going to work well for you, but it may take about 3 weeks for things to improve, staying on one steady dosage.

Every time your doctor ups your dosage, you can expect a recurrence or worsening of such side effects.

How are you?

Has anyone noticed a weight loss or weight gain with Prozac? Also have issues with anxiety on it, plus the jaw and whole side of my left face. I have been on this the longest but no really helping as I hoped. Tried all different dosages through the past few years and other SSRI meds, SNRI meds, ativan, clonazpam, imipramine, paxil, effexor, cymbalta, zoloft, lithium, xanax and many more with no luck. I do not like weight gain at all, stresses me out more and also migraines, fibromelgia pain, osteporosis, arthritis pain etc.....I was now suggested to be back on Imipramine 75mg, Latuda 40mg, and Ativan 2mg all at night!!! Wish me luck please as going on 55yrs old soon. Sick of these medication changes and no success in them. PLEASE give me all your opinions & experiences. So much appreciated God Bless Everyone on here:) xo Mia

Odd that you say anger is hard, my tween who was recently put on 20 mg Prozac seems to be overwhelmed with feelings and anger is def one of them. I am trying to reduce dosage to 10mg soon! The mood swings are unbearable for us both.

Has anyone on here, started at 20 then reduced to 10mg and if so did some of the irritability and mood change decrease or increase? Also noticed VERY impulsive type behavior after being put on this med and our first Dr "disagreed" but we are now seeking a second opinion.

Thank God our tween was taken off as her "real" diagnosis found and put on another med that is not an anti-depressent! Two weeks later she is back to normal and so thankful we found a second opinion.

After 30 days of being off Prozac and on a correct med for inability to metabolize Folic Acid correctly (thank God for genetic testing) that can lead to depressive type behaviors- SHE IS DOING great. Not all antidepressants are needed and it seems as most Drs today use as an easy fix, sadly. We got another opinion that totally changed the game and prob saved our daughters life.

This is my 3rd week in taking Prozac. This past week has been an emotional week, but I can't cry. I need to cry and want to cry but can't? Is this normal? Will it go away?

Lulu the fist 3-4 weeks for my daughter she was so sad also, then angry, roller coaster, and when she did cry-she cried a lot. Also gave some impulse control issues. It is not for everyone yet prescribed to millions. I have some family who have been on Zoloft for years and have done well.

I gained about 24lbs in 8 months! And now I've been off them for 5 weeks this weight is not shifting despite a decrease in eating and an increase in exercise!

I have just recently been prescribed fluoxetine 10mg. IDK about spelling, but it's generic for prozac. It was prescribed to me for a depression anxiety type problem I have. This is the first attempt to medicate my way out of this. I'm a diabetic and I'm also a recovering addict 3yrs in. I take tradjenta, metformin, lisinopril, amlodipine..... mobic and suboxone, from the same Dr's office. I also have a guy issue like the ED thing and no drive. I haven't started taking this yet. I can work through this issue with patience and understanding from my wife, but, one of the main side effects of this is on my libido. My father also takes this and he told me to just hang it up...??? I'm only 46. Are there any other options for this drug type that doesn't cause this? Granted, I'm starting tomorrow morning so it might not have any effect. I'm also very worried about the suicidal thoughts as a side effect. Please give me some information guys.

Re: James (# 17) Expand Referenced Message

Update on my prozac side effects... I've taken this now for 3 weeks almost 4 and it seems I feel a little more depressed, my anxiety differs but on average has seemed to decrease. I also seem to feel like it's might be harder to get angry, but again that changes per episode. My anxiety hits when I have too much stimuli or to much input... And I know it's a touchy subject but the guy part of side effects, well I already had a mild case of this but now it seems that I'm unable to... get interested, no drive. I don't know how to say it politically correct, so here goes... It's totally robbed me of interest in intimacy kinda like I'm numb down there. Are these things normal? Will they subside after a bit? Are there any other options? All this adds to my depression and I've been getting this hopeless feeling. I see my PCP next Thursday and will share this with him. I can't take the anxiety anymore but also don't think this is a good trade off, as my marriage is suffering over this issue. Anybody... Anything, any advice please.

Re: Doughboy (# 18) Expand Referenced Message

Hello. Here's an update on the generic prozac effects from my post on December 30th, 2017: My anxiety level is down, not gone but dampened considerably. The depression, well it fluctuates and seems to be a permanent thing. Some days are not so bad & some days are almost unbearable. I seem to have little spurts of happiness or of being excited, then the rollercoaster of almost crying. Is this normal or is this my normal? The guy issue... Well not so good, at all. It's like this has erased my libido and seems to have dulled the sensation down there considerably to an almost numbing effect. What gives? HELP, ADVICE or RECOMMENDATIONS? Anything guys, give me some feedback...

Re: James (# 17) Expand Referenced Message

I also had the same thing it seems. For the most part, it's hard to get angry lol but my anxiety spiked for a bit. I'm now on my second month, my anxiety seems to come and go. No foggy feeling. I do feel more... Maybe level might be the word, the guy stuff. Well the performance part subsided but the drive hasn't changed, is there a possibility that my testosterone could be low? Any advice?

I to am in a Suboxone treatment program. Thank you for your help and information. Your story sounds almost exactly like mine; high blood pressure, diabetes and all. Though my opiate use started when I was 15 and ran rampant till about 354 days ago. My next primary care visit I will be having my testosterone checked. Unfortunately the Suboxone I take now is used for the chronic pain I have from the two hip replacements I have and the issues with my back. Thank you so much Johnny for the insight and information. God bless.

Re: James (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

I've been on Suboxone 6mg daily for 3 years now and recently been put on Lisinopril for high blood pressure and metformin for diabetes. I've been on methadone 90mg for the years five years ago and popped pills for 4 years before that. It's a known fact that opiates rob you of testosterone. I had mine checked 2 months ago and it was very low so I started treatment for that but had to stop to get my blood pressure under control because testosterone treatment can raise blood pressure. I'm starting to wean myself off of Suboxone because it's robbed me of so much. Granted it helped me the way it was supposed to but I believe I was on it for too long. Now that I have a great support system I'm ready. Get your testosterone levels checked and therapy if needed because after my third week in it I felt like a young man again. Good luck and God Bless.

Re: Diana (# 10) Expand Referenced Message

My 22 year old step daughter is on 40mg of Prozac a day. She’s been on varying dosages since she was 12 my husband tells me. She alternates between anxiety attacks that keep her in her room - she paces around a pile of clothes all day long and nights out partying that end in tears and delusional behaviour (she was arrested and told the police a story that was straight from a Netflix story about a serial killer). She gets colds and sore throats and swollen glands every other week - so misses lots of work. She doesn’t have any friends and can’t bond with people in the office. It’s like there’s no real personality there - just a bundle of behaviours. Whenever there is an incident, she begs whoever has seen it not to tell anyone else - consequently no one has the full picture. If she drinks even a little bit of alcohol, what would be someone elses’s Hangover is her 3 day anxiety attack. Does this sound like anyone else’s Prozac experience? I’m wondering whether I’m seeing Prozac side effects or something else...

Re: James (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

Hello, I'm on my 3rd month of fluoxetine hcl 10 mg. My anxiety has improved. I still have panic episodes, though just not as severe. I still have the depression issue though. Seems like a mainstay for me. I'm worried about this libido issue and am wondering if it might be a testosterone deficiency instead of a side effect. Has anybody else had this issue? I'm asking for advice or suggestions as it's hard to discuss this issue with my primary care physician. Thanks guys.

I've been on it for 9 years. Now off. How many months will the side effects last?

I’ve been off of it due to bad side effects. turns out I can’t take it anymore. I quit taking it and after that I felt weird vibrating feelings in the back of my throat I enjoy singing and it was difficult to do that seeing as I’d feel scratchy and irritated afterwards. My speaking pitch wasn’t level. kept going up and down. I was short of breath too. to say the least I was losing my mind. anyone else? I’m now on Celexa. I’m waiting a few more weeks to see if it kicks in. so far my anxiety, panics and episodes of irrational thinking still come every now and then. I’ve read you’ll feel that at first and you’ll just have to wait it out.
