Prolia, Strange Side Effects?

Updated

I am 81 and had my first Prolia Shot May 7, 2015 and after three weeks I have developed a red rash looking sight UNDER the skin of my legs and back. Only the back itches, which is strange! The main problem is the pimple like scabs that form in my hair, which will crust over and flake off if I scratch them. I only wonder what other problems are forming in the areas that can not be seen? I worry about the next shot, and my choose NOT to take it. ????

Yes, that is the Prolia rash they talk about. Some people here are using Prednisone but the problem with Pred is that it makes the Prolia stop building bones so you are suffering from problems with Prolia without getting any benefit from it. If one looks online, one can easily see that Prednisone is contraindicated for anyone on Prolia. Maybe one could use an over the counter cortisone that may stop some of that. I don't know.

Prolia definitely is not for the public yet. Please call AMGEN, the company that makes it. You have to scroll through the different medications they make. When you find Prolia, click on it. You can then report your side effects to the nurses at AMGEN on their toll free number. They are in California. They seem to do more and care more than the FDA does. The only thing other people here are using for your specific problem, is being put on 10 mg of Prednisone/day. That will clear up that problem. Undoubtedly, you will have many more side effects yet to come. I know for sure I will never have another inj. I think Prolia is made from hamsters. It's not a chemical medication and that's why it is called a 'biologic'.

Hi Dottie,

In conjunction with the helpful info Poodle provided in the first two comments, I also wanted to add that you're certainly not alone in so far as the types of side effects you've reported as a result of Prolia shots. Perhaps after browsing through the following related threads, you can develop a more well-rounded opinion when it comes to deciding if further treatment is truly worth it or not...

This first thread has nearly 700 responses pertaining to Prolia's side effects:
Discuss/Prolia-side-effects-212949.htm?srcq=prolia

This next thread discusses how long the side effects are expected to last for:
Discuss/Prolia-Side-Effects-Duration-231097.htm?srcq=prolia

And if you have the time, I'd also recommend running a search for "Prolia" here on MedsChat to review numerous other patient experiences.

Hope this helps!

Hi Dotti, sorry to read that you are a victim too. Amgen website says for you to contact your MD immediately for the problem you are currently having. Please report it to AMGEN Corp and to the FDA. They are 'thinking' about putting more restrictive notices on it. If more problems occur, please log back in. There are many of us that have had problems with Prolia. Today my Doctor apologized for an hour as she pushed me into this injection against my better judgment. She did a lot of lab work today and is working with an Immunologist in another State. She said it would be totally gone from my body by the end of the 6th month and I told her that was another lie. She is desperately trying to blame it on something else and I said absolutely NOT. I never had problems until I had Prolia. Be well~Pood

I am due my third shot of Prolia is a few days. I have not bad bad reactions from Ptolia except the loss of one tooth. However, I was recently diagnosed with MDS, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. I am concerned if the Prolia will make my condition worsen?

Dorris~that's interesting as Prolia is chemo, just in a lesser amount than it's twin, Xgeva. Xgeva is for bone cancer which may include bone marrow. Check with your Oncologist. Be well~Pood

Dottie after my 4th injection I started with the red raised rash that has spread and gotten worse. It went from lt arm to rt now back and today its on my face and chest. My rash sound very similar to yours and itches like ctazy. But I had a biopsy done in december , and within the first two wk period the dark area started to bubble and slowly the skin sloughd off. At first I thought latex reaction now not totally sure, since it has spread.. Elaine age 60.

Dottie, I have tried objecting to having a prolia shot but the docs are just so emphatic that I should have them and point out the risks of hip fractures etc but NEVER will state possible side effects being a thigh fracture. What can they be thinking? I have now changed GPs 3 times and have only seen the last one once this week and she has the same thoughts as the previous guys. Are they being compensated by the Pharmas with each prescription they write...surely this can't be so.

I am 75 years old, did Forte injections for 6 months and Prolia injections every 6 months for over 2 years. I have experienced every complaint listed by ladies taking or have taken one or the other drug. My doctor wanted me to start Reclast and I decided I had enough. I finally got my hair to the point I am not losing as much and it is growing. I've been taking Biotin for over 6 months and it really helps. I see a gastrointestinal doctor for my stomach issues and I also go to pain management. If I had not become involved with medschat.com I would not know about the side effects. My doctor did not discuss any with me and when I would mention how I was feeling he would say it is not the medicine. I have osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, plus fibromyalgia.

Re: Poodle (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Prolia does make new bone it prevents bone turnover which is a normal occurence....what it does is coat over old dead bone that is brittle . Thats why prolia warns you one of the side effects is spontaneous fractures in your spine....
