Prolia Injection Side Effects

Updated

Aprox 2 weeks after the prolia injection I started to experience nausea and weight loss. Also, loss of appetite and a keen sense of smell developed. It was difficult to eat or smell cooked food. It has been months and these symptoms have decreased dramatically. In contacting their website they would not confirm or deny this as a side effect of the drug. Has anyone else experienced nausea w/this drug?

Hi Bonnie,

From what I could gather, the following side effects are associated with Prolia, that may be similar to what you had experienced:

-nausea
-tingling in your fingers, toes, or around your mouth
-pain, numbness, swelling, or drainage from mouth, teeth, or jaw
-vomiting

Referenced from: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a610023.html

You or your doctor can also report various side effects to the FDA's medwatch program at:
fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm

Hope this helps!

I had my first Prolia injection on October 23 and on November 4, 5,6 & 7 I have had nausea. It seems to come in waves. Not a constant but serveral times a day. My husband and I were out shopping on Thursday, I became overheated, flushed, weak, dizzy and could barely move. Finally made it to a display tub, set down, husband went to check-out for a bag and I threw-up in the bad. Was so embarrassed, but could not go find a restroom. It just seemed as if I would pass out if I let go of the shopping cart. Once I vomited I became better and could make it to the lobby to have a seat. I still feel nausea each day. My doctor said I might feel "puny" for a couple but this is worse than feeling puny.

I had my first inj. Mar 4th 2015 and within 2 hours had tightness in my throat, ears and chest. Immediately took Benadryl which helped somewhat and put on my CPap and oxygen machine. Each day my symptoms have gotten worse and worse. Stomach pains, nausea, extreme weakness, trouble walking, terrific cough, headaches and neck pain. Went to ER and the ER Doctor gave a shot of Benadryl and sent me home. Apparently the only relief they could give me is a steroid which I am also allergic to. I see by others posts that their symptoms have gone on for the whole 6 month period. My left leg is becoming hard to use. My doctor tried to say it was "something else going on" but the ER doctor said it was the side effects of the Prolia. Isn't there anything I can take to alleviate any of these symptoms which I even left out a few!! I have been so sick!!

It has been 5 months now since my first Prolia inj. and I am feeling much better. Maybe one a week I feel puny, but no more vomiting as earlier. Will let you know how it goes after my second inj. in April. I now believe it is the Arimidex that has caused me to not feel well. A new complaint is numbness in my right hand. 11 lymph nodes were removed in the right armpit when the mastectomy was done last July.

You are writing about what happened a year ago causing problems now. No I had mine removed too along with all the lymph nodes. If you are not taking Prolia for chemo, stop it as soon as possible. It's a very BAD drug. It has zero to do with the cancer you had and makes cancer seem like a walk in the park. Check all of it's side effects. A few people here have done well with it but most of us have not. Also congrats on being a fellow survivor!!

I found some interesting side effects from the Nat'l Institute of Health today. We know that Prolia binds to RANKL; however, T cell helpers are bound and cause us to have the infections, hypersensitivity reactions and autoimmune diseases. The last one was amazing to me since my Doctor that gave me the inj did a lot of blood work and the results are back today. I now have Celiacs Disease, which means I cannot eat any food that has wheat, rye or barley in it. It's classified as an autoimmune disease. I only have one thing to blame it on - Prolia. They also wrote it was amazing that we are taking a drug to build up our bones which at the same time causes ours to break or die as in thigh bone fractures and osteonecrosis of the jaw. It further states that Prolia alone does not help our bones. It's the calcium and Vitamin D we are taking that help our bones. It also states that the jaw bone death from Prolia is causing infections in the muscle surrounding the bones of the jaw. We have pretty much discussed the remainder of the article here. This year is the big year for Amgen as Drs are Rx'ing more and more and more of this all over the world now. If your husband is using it as a cancer drug, stay far, far away from him or you will get Prolia without the inj. As I have stated before, it builds more bone but that new bone is very fragile bone. Not new healthy bone like they want us to believe. I'll be so glad when this is over and gone whenever that will be.

I had my second Prolia injection in April. This time I asked to have the injection in my tummy. It is so much better to get it there. I'm feeling completely better now as I have been tolerating the Arimidex well since after the first couple of months. The Prolia only made my arm sore. I might add that I had a mini stroke in April before the Prolia inj. Still not 100% from that. I have considerable numbness on my left side. I do get around though. Doing better each day. The medication for my breast cancer has taken a back seat compared to the stroke.

Grannyvee, it takes a long time to get the full use of that arm back after the breast cancer and being scraped down to the bone to remove any particle of flesh. Keep working with it. You will get it back. I struggled with it for a long time but had to return to work ASAP as I needed their insurance at that time. I had used up all my vacation time and sick leave time. I was pretty young at the time too about - 46. Congrats on being a survivor. Actually, I think Prolia is worse but cancer is such a frightening diagnosis as we don't know if we are going to live or die. With Prolia we know there is an end some place in time --- just not when and neither do they or our MDs. You should get a medical bracelet so no one makes a mistake about using that arm for anything! It's off limits for blood pressure, any injections or pic lines. When they remove the lymph nodes, it removes all our protection on that side of our body. Be well~Pood

Poodle: I had the mastectomy on my right side. The right under arm from elbow up is sometimes numb, but no pain. The stroke left my left side weak, not the cancer. I'm well aware of not having BP or injections on/in the right arm. Most of my medical providers are aware of that too. At least all of those I've encountered. I'm 80 years old now so my strength is not what it was 30 years ago, but I'm handling all the best I can. The last 2 years have been tough for our family. May the Lord bless you and we all continue to do well.

Gran - Drs. do make mistakes with us. The one that injected the Prolia got it in my cancer arm. She didn't bother to look at records or anything. Just grabbed a shoulder and shoved in the shot and it was definitely not subcutaneously either. I was complaining loudly and told her I was going to get a big tattoo on it that just said "NO" on it. I do hope the Prolia people make her life miserable. I don't want to ever see her again. I will strictly use my family GP Doctor. Even my pharmacy said they are getting a lot of complaints about her and it's past time she retired. There comes a time when MDs are dangerous and her time has expired. She sent me for blood work and the lady was totally ticked at me for not letting her use my right arm. Some people just don't get it!!! When we say No, we are saying it for an excellent reason. Even my Dentist knows to Rx me on antibiotics before he works on me. He knows how to read.

Poodle: I'm sorry you have had all of the trouble that you explain. I spent 2 weeks in hospital after my stroke and the nurse had placed a sign above my bed, "NO BP OR INJECTIONS IN R ARM." She knew when I got there what to do. I'm just hoping to gain energy and strength now. I have a bad knee that needs to be replaced soon. Take care.

I have! Funny you should say that nausea was a problem. I have it, especially at night, but that's the only meal I eat! No appetite either. Hope this goes away soon. Vomiting and dehydration are dangerous for me since I only have 1 kidney and over New Yrs. I was hospitalized w /kidney failure. Had not started the prolia yet, just a problem I have with Lupus.

It has been 13 months since I received a prolia infusion. My doctor will not give me another. The reason: right after I recieved the prolia I developed severe stomach issues. The cramping is less now but nothing stays in my system. To date I have lost just over 40 lbs. I have several additional issues as a result. The doctors claim they cannot do anything for all the additional issues until they figure out how to get my stomach issues under control.

I have something on my left breast. It's too small for them to see what it is at the moment. I go back to the breast center in May 2021 so we can find out what this is.

There is no history of breast cancer in my family.

I've been trying to research if Prolia does something to the breasts. Some researchers say it protects a woman to a certain point from breast cancer. Still, I've read some posts in the forum about women getting cancer after taking Prolia when there wasn't a history of it in their families.

Suggestions for other places to look would be much appreciated. I would like to have solid information to give to the doctor. It's common sense to believe she would know but I haven't found that to be the case with most doctors. Most of my doctors appreciate the information I bring them. I want to be armed with all the information I can.

Many thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!
Nikki

Re: Kazz (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

Did you have a genetic test done for Celiac? If not, you could be gluten intolerant which gives the same symptoms and treated with a gluten-free diet. A biopsy is done to check for Celiac. Here's a link for more detailed information. Despite having ancestors from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England I have gluten intolerance and not Celiac.

Here's link in case anyone is interested: https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/screening-and-diagnosis/screening/

Re: Kazz (# 24) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Kazz,
A few years ago I reported issues with FDA and I called Amgen and reported it as well.
If I can find a connection with Prolia and the breast issue, I need to tell the doctor and then report it to the FDA.

Hugs,
Nikki

Re: Anna (# 19) Expand Referenced Message

Could you please tell me where to find the information about Prolia giving people cancer? I've been looking around but can't find anything.

I've developed something...they aren't sure what this spot is on my left breast. I go back for another mammogram and ultrasound in May 2021. They said it was too small to know what this is.

I'm scared. The breast doctor who looked at the results was pushing the Keto diet. She said, "Do you want cancer?" Dumb question. "No." Many cancers feed on glucose (sugar) which is why she wants me to go on Keto. Truth be known, it is a difficult diet. I do feel better eating the French way and may continue to do so as I was finally starting to feel better and lose weight slowly.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of breast issue after having been on Prolia, I would appreciate your comments. I hate to blame everything on Prolia but it's difficult not to.

Hugs and blessings,
Nikkie
