Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 21)

Updated

I've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?

I'm due for my third Prolia shot and bone density and test for vitamin D. My hair has fallen out, just breaking off. The only new med is Prolia shot. After my test l'm going to discuss this with Doctor. I'm so embarrassed of so much hair loss. Wearing baseball caps and order a hair topper. l will not take a third shot, wasn't aware of all the side effects never knew it can cause severe hair loss.

I stopped Prolia--too late after the third injection
Now I have to stop dyeing my hair because my scalp is so dry because of all the hair loss that the traditional dye causes so much irritation and hair falls out all day long it's affecting my moral
There must be alternatives
I hope you find something to replace Prolia and let me know
Thanks and be well

I took 4 shots and from the beginning, my hair started coming out. At first, I didn't associate it with Prolia because my doctor didn't mention anything about side effects. At first, I would see hair in my brush more than usual. As time went by it became hand full and don't let me start on how much hair was in my shower drain. The pain I am familiar with because of fibromyalgia. I have naturally wavy hair and I took pride in my hair, I noticed the texture of my hair has changed and it is very thin. My doctor wants me to do Reclast but I am not its been over a year since my last shot and I just noticed I am not shedding as much hair. Actually, I am tired I usually do everything my doctors ask. The problem I have is I don't feel any better, with the treatments and medication I have done and still doing.. I continue taking vitamins but no more shots. Good luck with what you decide. Also, I have learned about the side effects from the people on medschat, otherwise I would have still been trying to figure out why I was losing my hair.

I took 4 injections my hair is extremely thin. The only good thing I can say I don't have to shave. No hair on my arms, legs or under arms.

These drugs are really horrible. I've been on Fosamax which now I have terrible GERD I've been on Boniva which has given me terrible joint pain and the Prolia which made me lose hair and I have thin hair to begin with. Since I did not have my third shot in April I have noticed the hair on my arms grew back which gives me hope that maybe more hair will grow on top. From what I have read Prolia is a low dose of chemo used for bone cancer so it makes sense that hair loss would be a symptom. I hope everything works out for you in whatever decision you make.

I hate it for you. I am a year with no shot but still losing hair which is thin. I think there is hope as women who have undergone rigorous chemo do grow their hair back. That does not help the daily emotional downer of dealing with it though.

I am still losing hair and having trouble with teeth. I have never been the same since I had the Prolia Shot.

Yes, hair loss is one of the many side effects of Prolia. It has been a nightmare for me, having had many of the horrible side effects of this drug. My last shot was in 2015, and I still have lasting side effects that I am not sure will ever go away. Teeth problems, just saw an oral surgeon yesterday, and he said that I was lucky to have had no more tooth and jaw problems for this drug. It is now being used for Cancer patients who have bone cancer. As I stated, a total nightmare for me. I hope this helps you and others.

That is exactly right and I searched it as well that it is a low dose of chemo used for bone cancer. Hair loss happened to me after my second shot and I was even stunned at the hair on my arms were gone. I never did the third shot in April and to my surprise the hair on my arms have grown back and the hair on my head seems to be filling in somewhat and there are not so many sparse thin patches. I have been taking biotin which I have been told will help existing hair so maybe that's why my hair has been feeling a little bit thicker and plumper. I'm glad you have no more problems with your teeth and jaw and hopefully by not taking this horrible drug anymore your hair will come back as well. Best of luck Gloria

Re: Gloria (# 411) Expand Referenced Message

Thank you Gloria for your message. My last injection was October 30th 2018 after having lost at least 50% of my hair. I thought that this ongoing daily fallout would eventually stop, but as you have indicated this can go on for years. This is very upsetting considering that hair loss is what we can see; what about what we cannot see?

Unfortunately we can't see our immune systems which is where ( I think ) all of the side effects stem from. I have started taking collagen which seems to have helped with the skin dry out and rashes as well as maybe the hair. Have only been taking it a month so it is too soon to tell about the hair- the skin improvement is obvious and less hair seems to be falling out. I can't find out exactly where Prolia is actually manufactured... what country, what facility. Does anybody know?

Re: Lizzie (# 414) Expand Referenced Message

Denosumab (Prolia) was manufacture by a company called Amgen which is one the world's largest biotechnology company and was established in Newbury California in 1980. I'm not sure if this truly the right answer to your question Lizzie but hope it helps.

Thanks for your response!--- I am trying to find out where it is actually made; Amgen has offices in America and China and some other global locations... I really want to know where the stuff is assembled ( mixed?) and created before it arrives at the Doctors' office in injection form. Then maybe the inspection records can be checked..

You bey. I took that shot PROLEI 1-2 yrs ago I’m still losing Hair and my teeth. Just lost another tooth!then had infected gum.,now one is half broke off.i am hoping a root Chanel can be done to save it. My hair is so thin I have to use that powder stuff and paint my head, to fill in where my scape is showing. That shot almost killed me.my primary Doctor told me if I took another shot it would kill me. I would not recommend it be given to anyone.

I hate it for you! I have wrestled with the hair and had some mouth pain along the jawline but so far have not lost any teeth. Dermatologist found a rash in my scalp that he thinks led to the hair loss... all kinds of bumps and itching. Prolia does cause rashes so maybe that is the link... am using scalp cleansing shampoo.. still shedding but not as much.

Re: Lizzie (# 418) Expand Referenced Message

I've been writing about my hair shedding for a while and convinced myself that avoiding the next prolia injection scheduled in April 30, 2019 would be the end of this. However, nearly a year has gone by, and the shedding is such that the crown of my head is getting incredibly thin. I didn't pay enough attention that when I had my hair dyed that my scalp was extremely itchy, so I stopped going for traditional colouring. Since I still work full time at 66, I want to look presentable with the many people I meet each day. I could retire, but that seems a bit extreme. I'm searching for a colour product that won't irritate my scalp. As far as my teeth/gums: they're in big trouble, as some teeth are loosening from the jaw. Is this all because of prolia? Or perhaps my hormones are completely out of whack. I'm seeing the doctor Monday am and will ask these questions and hopefully she has a few extra minutes for me. I really appreciate sharing my struggles and learning about yours. ending my best thoughts to all who read and contribute to this site.

Re: dietitian (# 419) Expand Referenced Message

Physicians will totally deny side effects from Prolia and tell you that you are the only one who has ever complained, so don't be surprised if that is what you hear. I am in a couple of support groups with thousands of members, and have learned that is the universal response. My third and final Prolia injection was in June of 2018, and the hair on my arms and legs grew back in this summer, so I know the loss was due to Prolia. I still have spots on my scalp that are very sparse, and I am still losing more than I should and can't tell that it is growing back at all. I also have acid reflux that I never had before Prolia, and my gastroenterologist told me that he sees a lot of patients on Prolia with gastric problems. I also had severe joint pain, that started early on in my treatment, to the point that I could hardly walk. That has resolved by stopping as well as the extreme fatigue. I also had an issue with a tooth, which may or may not be related. Bottomline. my overall health took a nosedive when I started this drug. Now I have to worry about rebound fractures which is upsetting to a person who has never fractured before. I feel I am worse off than when I started.
