My mum has been on Pradaxa since they first came out a few years now.Her weight has increased dramatically around the abdomen it does not look like normal fat?? Her arms and legs are now the same, she is a vegan and does not eat a lot.Breathlessness is an issue which then causes her problems when walking.Any ideas ## Hi- I hope you have taken some steps to consider the alternatives, it sounds like she is encountering some adverse reactions but under the current FDA processes governing the release of new medicine, it will be impossible to determine if the reactions are related to the drug unless she gets off it for the 3-5 days it takes to clear out of her system. Having witnessed the process with an “insiders” view, I’ll share my concerns about how these well-marketed ...

Since I started with this drug, over a year ago, I have had diarrhea. Now I am having stomach pains. A stool sample showed hidden blood. I am being prepared for a colonoscopy. I feel this med is the culprit, even though cardio says he doesn't think so. I am going to ask for a different med. See if I can get this under control. ## Hello, Barb! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. According to the side effects listed by the FDA, Pradaxa has been known to cause blood in the stool of some people that take it, along with bleaching, indigestion, heart burn and burning throat. Thus, it very well could be due to this medication, it's actually listed as being a fairly common side effect. Is there anything else I can help with? ## THANKS FOR THE REPLY. I HA...

My mom was prescribed piracetam along with pradaxa after a stroke. Oxiracetam is more potent than piracetam, but I am not sure whether she should switch. She is 88 and had a stroke a month and a half ago. What is the effect of nootropics on the thinning of blood, especially when one takes Pradaxa? What is the effect on blood pressure? ## @adamit, Sorry to hear about the recent stroke your mom had. I hope she's well on her way to doing better. I too have read that Oxiracetam is more effective than Piracetam for improving various brain disorders, including dementia. However I have yet to come across any specific details that evaluate it's safety along with a pharmaceutical preparation such as Pradaxa. For some reason drug interaction checkers typically only work on pharmaceutical ...

pradax has me feeling miserable. I have fluid retention so bad in the legs and feet and torso. I am dehydrated, mouth is dry all the time. eyes are dry. Please help. my IBS is acting up. I want off this. I had none of this with warfarin. anyone got the same problems? can i stop it on my own?????Olive ## Have you consulted your doctor, yet? In this case, it is very important to determine if your problems are being caused by the medication, or by something else. Pradaxa contains the active ingredient Dabigatran and, when stopped, it is not known to cause rebound coagulation. ## Don't do it alone for heavens sake - call your doctor you want off it - you have a choice no matter what he says - tell him/her you want to go back to Coumadin. You cannot stop it on your own as you might get a...

Since I was on Pradaxa my breathing became worse. ( I have emyhsema and bronchitis and is is worse since I took that. My Dr took me off of it and put me on asprin one a day. I still have some shortness of breathe. but I hope that will go away since I am no longer on Pradaxa! Go to "This is a bad drug site.for more info ## Please do not take this drug , I watched my mother die in the matter of 4 days and bleed to death . The hospital gave her many blood transfusions and Plasma but nothing worked , we had an private autopsy preformed and her death was from the Pradaxa and she died of a severe hemmorage. She was on Warfarin for a long time prior to Pradaxa and she was fine. ## Tracy, I am very sorry for your loss. It's sad that Pradaxa is one of the anticoagulants that has no known...

I have been on pradaxa for about 5 months now and have noticed a thinning of my hair in the front. I am 69 and maybe it is just getting older. I have had no side effects at this time. I also take pacerone and my afib is under control. I did notice that my diabeties meds seem to be working better now as I have had to cut way down on my insulin after starting these meds. ## Hello, Diane! How are you? Actually, it's usually the Pacerone that causes the Alopecia and it is reversible, if the medication is discontinued or replaced with another option. Is there anything else I can help with? ## What else is available?

I have been taking Fragmin injections for 1 yr. now and i think they are causing my leg and joint pains. I'm going to go on Pradaxa and am deathly afraid of bleeding. is there anyone out there who has had good results with Pradaxa? ## Hello, Karen! I hope you are doing well. There are many people that have had good results with it. The risks are really about the same for both the Pradaxa and Fragmin, so there is really no need for your fears to increase. What has your doctor said about the issue? There are many people that suffer joint pains from these types of drugs. ## My mother was diagnosed with small-cell lung carcinoma. Her oncologist put her on a regimen of Fragmin to prevent blood clots in her lung; she is considering taking Dabigatran/Pradaxa instead of continuing her injec...

why will insurance plans not pay for this when dr says it is important nto take and you cant afford it ## Pradaxa (dabigatran) is used to prevent stroke and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation. Doctor's may say that it is an important medication to take; but this depends on whether or not you have a condition which requires this type of medication. If you do, I would suggest looking into other prescription drugs with similar indications. Insurance companies may accept one brand of this med over another. Ideally, you'd have to talk to your insurance company to find out specifically why they wouldn't cover this (as there could be many reasons), but I've seen insurance companies that only cover the cost of certain brand names and don't cover the cost of gen...

I have high Blood pressure and take Pradaxa for A Fib Pressure is for the most part under control. Haven't noticed any afib for 2 years. would really like some help with ED. Would it a advisable to use Viagra. I am about 15 lbs overweight and 72 years of age. ## Hello, Art! How are you? It would be best, in this case, to check with your doctor. Whether or not you can take Viagra, or one of the other ED medications will depend on various factors, such as your INR and your actual blood pressure levels, because Viagra can also affect them. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was on warfarin following a cerebellar infarct and i really struggled with trying to keep my diet consistent to maintain my INR level and the side effects of warfarin got so bad I was going to stop taking it! My consultant said the risk of another strok e was too high as I have AF and he prescribed Pradaxa. Within three weeks I felt so much better. I have been taking pradaxa for over a year now and no side effects at all. Some of the side effects from warfarin took a while to clear but they have now all gone. No alopecia, the pains in my toes, which were stopping me from walking too far, have completely gone, no nausea and no more feeling like death warmed up! I know the risks associated with pradaxa but to be honest I am happy to take them as I now have a good quality of life. If I h...

I am taking Pradax at the moment, but I understand that it can cause joint swellings ( which I am having). I understand there is a new drug out for treatment to atrofib ## Pradaxa is the newest that I'm aware of, it was just approved back in 2010. I am not sure what all may be available for you, since I'm based in the U.S. and going by our information here. As to the joint pain and swelling, that is a potentially serious side effect and you should contact your doctor about it immediately to have it checked out. Does anyone know of a newer medication that's available? ## There are actually quite a few anti-arrhythmic medications that are often prescribed to help prevent future episodes of atrial fibrillation. Commonly used medications include: Amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone)...

Does astaxanthin interfere with blood thinners like pradaxa? ## Since the Astaxanthin is just a supplement, it has not been tested for possible interactions with prescription medications, such as the Pradaxa, or for problems with medical conditions. Thus, the only thing I can really suggest is discussing it with your doctor, before taking it, since some supplements can cause adverse reactions. This would be the safest thing to do. Learn more Pradaxa details here. Are there any other questions?

Hi my mum had a hip op on the 16th Jan, she is 81 was discharged on the 28th Jan and told to take Pradaxa, she was quite well the day she came out over the next 2 days she got ill very weak and began passing blood in her urine, our doctor arranged immediate admission back to hospital, she had various tests, they said she had kidney infection, gallbladder inflammation and possible liver problems, she turned very yellow. They began treating her on the 2nd of February I got a call to go to the hospital as she was unwell and had been vomiting blood during the night, a camera revealed ulcers on the oesphagus and stomach. She has had 4 weeks of very ill health, she is still very weak but hopefully on the mend, I don't know if Pradaxa was the cause as she only took 3 tablets, but it says t...

I moved from Warfarin to Pradaxa 1.5yrs ago. I was having to have blood tests quite frequently with my INR decreasing or increasing despite trying to maintain a correct diet. I have been so much healthier with Pradaxa and have returned to competitive swimming, At age 65 I am swimming 100 M Medley's. I keep getting much faster in the pool. I am not sure if it is connected but I changed my diet to only include Fish/ skinless chicken-sometimes, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables and Muesli for breakfast. I did have high Blood pressure and high Cholesterol but my BP is quite normal and one 45 yr Physician told me, my Cholesterol was much better than his. ## Hi Charles, According to the New York Times, Pradaxa was identified as the primary suspect in 542 patient deaths reported to the F.D.A. in...

Has anyone heard of Pradaxa being used for blood clot patients who don't have atrial fibrillation? Primarily to achieve the benefits of no frequent blood testing? ## Pradaxa contains the active ingredient Dabigatran, which is just another oral anticoagulant. Learn more Pradaxa details here. You can even look at the information at the link I provided and it lists it as sometimes being used as an alternative to Warfarin, since it doesn't require the frequent tests. There are several others under investigation for this use, as well. Are there any other questions or comments?

Pradaxa mostly used as a substitute for warfarin (Coumadin ) for atrial fibrillation but there are also response of tamoxifen side effects such as unusual bleeding, short breath etc. There are also some response of having dehydrated, dryness of mouth/eyes. The positive side is that It does not require regular blood tests and it actually works better in few cases. Pradaxa might be a good substitute of warfarin but need more attention in long term use and in some specific cases.

My wife has a leaflet valve in the mitral position, an A-V node ablation with pacemaker and constant A-fib. She has been on coumadin for 30 years and within the past few years has begun to get purple patches on her arms that are not bruises. They appear to be very near to necrosis as any damage to these areas becomes an open lesion. She also has unstable INR and tests weekly with a CoaguChek meter. Her cardiologist is unwilling to try the 100mcg concurrent vitamin-K therapy as an attempt to stabilize INR. It would appear that Pradaxa if approved for mechanical valve protection would get her out of the high risk of INR instability, the purple spots on her arms and maybe prove cost effective. My question, is there any hope that Pradaxa will be approved for her condition in the near future...

Hi, My Dad recently started using Pradaxa and I had no idea how serious of a switch it was from Warfarin. I was shocked to find out he could die from Internal Bleeding. Has anyone had this problem while using the drug Pradaxa? I found a website with some great information that has answered some of my questions, but I still want to hear from an actual user. Check it out, and Please help!! pradaxa-internal-bleeding.com/ ## The same risk is a possibility with Warfarin, or any blood thinner that someone might use, it's just some may carry a higher risk than the others. However, it is the nature of blood thinners, even if someone just takes Aspirin. Has he discussed such concerns with his doctor? ## I would suggest to get your dad off the medicine as quickly as possible. My dad passed aw...
