Post Shingles Neuralgia R Head/eye

Updated

I have been free of shingles blisters on my R head/eye since November 1st.

For pain relief I am currently taking up to 3.6GM Gabopentin tabs daily, Acetaminophen/Codeine #4 300/60 MG tabs 2-3 tabs daily as needed, Amitriptyline 50MG (presc 1/2 tablet before bed, working up to 1 tablet), I can take 1/4 tablet before bed once a week, but I don't like it, makes me too weird, strange dreams.

My blood work describes slightly elevated liver enzymes possibly in conjunction with recent acid reflux, I would like to completely bypass acetaminophen w/Codeine, I need a pain reliever that is not bound to acetaminophen.

I am 54 YOM, good health/weight.
Thanks

Post hepatic neuralgia can be excruciatingly painful .I suffered from this some years ago and found relief with Percocet but that too contains acetaminophen. Tramadol is apap free but has undesirable side effects. They now have a hydrocodone prep. Without Tylenol in a time release setting you may want to discuss this option with your pcp.hope you find resolution to your situation regards, Kenie.

There are quite a few other options, on top of what have already been mentioned, some you can discuss with your doctor are Oxycodone, Opana, Morphine, and Dilaudid.

The FDA warns that they all carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

Codeine is also available without Acetaminophen.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Hello David. Sorry you are suffering from PHN. I am also, for twenty years now. I take the gabapentin in much higher doses than you are as well as the 50 mg of Amitriptyline at bedtime. The side effects go away after awhile and it does help me sleep some. I also take tramadol 50 mg two tablets twice a day. You might want to try it as it does seem to help with the pain. I’m sorta ok unless I touch the area on my leg and foot where the shingles were, or if clothing brushes against it. When that happens the pain is awful burning, stabbing, and itching. Takes awhile to calm it down again. I hate it but what can we do! Good luck, you are not alone.
