Hi Lana,

From what I could gather, there are potentially unsafe drug interactions between Jakafi (ruxolitinib) and Hydroxyurea. Quoted below are the precautions you should be aware of:

"MONITOR CLOSELY: The concomitant or sequential administration of multiple antineoplastic agents may potentiate the risk and severity of additive toxicities, such as immunosuppression and myelotoxicity.

MANAGEMENT: Close clinical and laboratory monitoring for hematologic and nonhematologic toxicities are recommended during concomitant use. Dose adjustments or rescheduling may be necessary. The manufacturer's recommendations and local protocols for dosage, antineoplastic regimens, monitoring, and treatment of toxicity should be consulted."

To help reiterate any details above, it's basically stating that using both meds together can be very toxic, and that you should contact your doctor to determine a safer way to use them in coherence with one another.

Does his doctor know that he is taking both of these medications?

Lana,
Your best option to discover this info is to talk to a certified pharmacist. You should also create a list of all medications he is taking, both by prescription and over the counter. The information sent by David is correct but don’t focus on just two drugs, all must be considered because they may be causing problems as well. Also I don’t know what state you live in but if he has a prescription for medical marajunia that should be disclosed as well. Keep a copy for yourself and give him one. Everytime he gets a refill that list should be reviewed, even if done before things change.
You should have a help or hotline with your insurance company that gives prescribing information or advice. As for the close monitoring you need to find what tests and the recommended frequency. Hope this helps.

I'm assuming your dad has polycythemia Vera or essential Thrombocythemia, this is what both HU and Jakafi are prescribed for. It is blood cancer and both of these drugs are chemotherapy. I've been on both separately. The side effects for HU were too much for me. The Jakafi is a little better, but also has side effects. I've never seen anyone taking both. Has your father had a bone marrow biopsy and is he seeing an MPN specialist? If not 0, he needs to asap.
