Percocet Vs Opana (Page 2)

Updated

I have Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes #2, Sciatica down both legs, Piriformis Syndrome, L4 L5 S1 Vertabre Fracture x2, Osteoarthritis in my spine, knees, thumbs, feet! Chronic numbness down my right leg, groin area that hurts like hell. I started out taking Darvocet and have worked my way up to Percocet 325/10 for the last 3 years. I was wondering IF Opana would work better? My doctor wanted to put me on Oxycotin, but of course my insurance won't pay for it, not even with a required PA! So according to Medicare Part D (which I have) they need a PA for Oxycotin, but not one for Opana! Oxycotin is considered a class 3 and Opana a class 2 drug! So is Opana as strong as Oxycotin? Are they both stronger than Percocet? I tried Morphine Sulfate 10 mgs about 3 years ago, and it did NOTHING for me, isn't Opana in the morphine class of drugs? ANY suggestions will be very helpful. My pain on a scale from 1-10 is on average a 8, 24/7...Once in a great while I will feel better, after a long day of Percocet and my pain level goes down to about a 6! I take 180 percocet a month, that is a little too much acetaminophen for my liver! I was reading up on Kaiden ER which is a Morphine class drug, you take 1 every 24 hours, has anyone heard of that one and how does it work?

I cannot find a pain management doctor that will help. I don't think they believe that most people would choose not to be in pain. I cannot speak for others but I just want a quality of life and do things that most people take for granted.

Hello there,
I think the biggest issue you're facing is that you're seeing a "PA", you need to be seeing a "PAIN SPECIALIST".
They are better suited for making the right call for the proper meds that you SHOULD be taking n not what the PA is simply giving you.
With a Pain Specialist they will have you sign a Pain Contract that simply states that you will only see n have meds scribed with their office n that you won't abuse your meds.
A Pain Specialists sole purpose is to find the root of your pain n try to find a solution n if they can't provide you with meds to keep you at least comfortable.
I hope that helps, usually you can finds them by contacting your insurance company n asking them who is contracted that you can see n if need be get a referral from your Primary Care doc.

You asked how we get our Drs to give us so much pain meds.. I only speak for myself, I go to a pain management Dr- relieving pain is his goal... It's not easy to get to PM- and there are a slew of crappy crokers out there so shop around for a real pain management Dr.. My primary dr would never give me what my PM dr does ...

I actually take the 10mg opana for my back pain and it does really good for me. I like taking them alot better than 6 to 8 perocet's just to make it through the day. The opana's work really good, but are highly addictive.

Yeah in my opinion, the opana's are stronger than Oxycontin. A 40mg opana is definitely stronger than a 80mg Oxy. But it's like you said, pain meds work different on different people. Do what I did an keep trying different meds til you find what's best for you, your body and of course your pain!!! But I'm going to warn you, those opana's are very addictive so becareful with those if you decide to try them. Good luck....

If I was you, I would ask your Dr about putting you on the 15mg opana ER. They work really good. I've been on them for 5 years and I'm glad they make them that's for sure.

I'm Ken. I'm 39 and have been disabled since age 24. my spine hurt so bad the day I woke up an couldn't get up my legs. I felt acute pain an had no clue what was going on so I got help to get up an went to the doctor. they said I was fine then after 10 more doctors 1 said a bulging disc and loaded me up on lortabs, Percocets and Valiums, and then after few years my gut was gone from Tylenol in the pain meds so I took meds for that. It healed in 3 years. By then I went to UVA in Charlottesville Virginia and saw a top ranked spine doctor. after that day he said you are too young but your spine is like an 80 year old man, you got DDD bad. most discs from the lower spine up to below my shoulder was deteriorated, so like bone to bone. so he said no surgeries, pain meds for the rest of my life. At that time the only type of meds I had known about as a teen was Valiums, Klonopin, LSD, beer and cannabis. so I went to his PM Doctors and 4 of them diagnosed me an said what I needed to be on and absolutely no Tylenol. so I got 2 30mg Oxycontin real OC er an 15mg max 8 a day must last 30 days and I live in Virginia but from my house to them was 3hrs there an 3hrs back so they sent a recommendation letter to my family doctor an asked if he would mange my pain and he said yes. so all these yrs go by and I've been on high amounts of a lot of opiates then I got alot worse. it moved to my neck and I got fibromyalgia bad. my leg blows out all the time. I can't sleep. at age 36 i was on 30mg oxycodone ir 360 a month, 12 in a 24hr period. did that for couple years. never abused them. I was dependent on them as I got through everyday on them. outta nowhere i go to get my script and it's only for 120 15mg tablets and not 3 10mg Valiums to only 90 5mg tablets and I'm worse now then I was then. now he is leaving and I'm on those but I'm staying at a six and pain is not even eased but for like 1 hour. I know I will always have pain but I'm supposed to be on around the clock opioid medications 12 hr er for long-term and something 4 to 6hrs for breakthrough pain, an I got taken off that down to nothing. he said he is leaving and I need another doctor to help me and I can't find one that will help me get the right combo and amounts for all my conditions cause I should be on the type an amounts I was on at age 24 and up, but not get me to where I can't enjoy anything and my kids are wondering why I'm not able to go fishing, hunting, camping, and always snapping at anyone that ask me something. I'm not normal an I got a legitimate need to be on the opiates as they were working till after 13 to 15yrs of having a normal life and happy and now I'm worse than ever and now I really need a doctor that will help me cause I'm now under medicated and think that all those years on what I was on was working great and for no reason he just took my body in like a shock an I can't get through life like this. What upsets me most is I no some people that get tons of it from Doctors and they don't have a real legitimate reason to be on it cause they sell what they get and pay all bills and buy all this stuff and not work at all. just 2 scripts a month and they are happy and I really need it for pain and I'm looked at like I'm a junkie and I'm not. I would love to get my life back to normal. If any Doctors can help me please let me know. Thanks.

Sirena, I can reply with my opinion, but since it has been so long since you posted original message, almost a year, I don't know if you will see my reply. Before I get into any dialog about my personal health and knowledge, just reply that you read this message first.
Thank you,

I had 3 spinal operations, nerve damage, chronic pain & more. Btw, from a surgeon who lost his license, kicked out of his partnership & the state with a long list of legal suits unbeknownst to me beforehand. No doctors would respect my pain & address it properly. I finally was referred by a person who suffered the same to an out of town doctor. After years of suffering, wanting to die to end the suffering, & being over medicated with junk that didn't address my pain by local dr, I finally took this person's advice. The new Dr cleaned the slate of 7 non effective pills & just prescribed one. Methadone. Wow! A miracle. So easy life became. Just one pill, once a day, addressed the pain correctly & I finally got relief both physically & mentally. After so many experiments on me, putting my body & mind on an endless roller-coaster of hell, one Dr with 1 pill made me functional finally. Then a new Dr comes along & tries to fix what's not broken. Living hell all over again. I was put on opana. That is the most horrid med I have ever experienced! I was a nervous wreck & completely out of my mind. I begged to be taken off of it. That pill should be erased! Then another Dr puts me on a type of oxycodone that breaks down into opana knowing I cannot take opana. I wondered why I was having all the same crazy wacked out side effects as i had on straight opana. I told him to get me off this oxy devil pill. He explained that the oxy breaks down into 3 types of chemicals...1 being opana. Then why did he give it to me?

I have had Percocet before, oxycodone once before against my wishes, and I never had these nerve wracked side effects. So, my warning, stay away from opana. And my question, were those other oxycodones, like percocet, not breaking down into opana? Also, knowing that opana is like morphine, which I refuse to take, he offered me that or Percocet (which is oxycodone). I don't get him. The only thing that worked for me, the dr takes away and all the things I can't endure, he offers. What nonsense! All by the whim of a governor who knows nothing about the torment of chronic pain & cruelty of putting patients on physical roller-coaster rides of changes! I never abused any medication, have a perfect record, perfect pill count, certified as a non addictive personality, didn't die, & finally able to help my child have a life...drive to grocery store, feed her, let her have a birthday party, trick or treat, have friends, play sports, etc.. Then the law changes & robs "2" lives once again! Once again, the fridge went empty, we both went hungry. I was in too much pain to drive, let alone shop, etc. Whoever keeps making up these rules & changing up the rules have NO intimate idea what they are doing. There are more side effects than just from pills! It's destroying lives & extra lives depending on their parents to be functional. Children think their parents are mad at them from the permanent scoul look on face not understanding its from pain. It effects offspring emotionally. Not only is the patient scarred & in misery but it causes kids to be emotionally scarred. Please just let doctors treat patients according to what works best for each individual as they were supposed to be trained to do. Stop suffering us sufferers even more than we already chronically do.

Shelley, your story sounds much like mine. OxyContin did nothing for me (the ER), and my pain mgmt wanted to put me on fentanyl, 50mcg, which I didn’t like to take that much pain medicine and get hooked on fentanyl. I had done a lot of research on OPANA 10mg (IR) and they work great. I’ve been on them for about 2 years now. I have read that 1 (10mg) opana is about equivalent to 3 (10mg) Percocet and they worked for me. Matter of fact I just had back surgery yesterday due to a bulging disc that was so large it was cutting my blood flood and nerve damage to my sciatic nerve on my right side. The neurosurgeon said it was one of the largest bulging disc he has seen in a very long time. Some others in the surgery room had never seen one that big and one day after I have no pain in my leg at all, just some pain around the incision site, which is expected after the surgery. I have zero pain and just have to baby the incision from the surgery. But to answer your question OPANA IS DEFINITELY STRONGER THAN PERCOCET, and personally, I wouldn’t mess with OxyContin at all.

Please NOTE, SHELLEY IM NOT A DOCTOR OR ANYONE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD, but I know what works for me. “AFTER MY SURGERY, I CAN’T WAIT TO BE ABLE TO COME OFF OF ALL MY PAIN MEDS”. Which will take a little time but I can see the light at the end on this dark tunnel I thought I never would have seen. Now, Shelley, these Opana 10mg are not going to make you feel “high”, and if that’s what you're looking for just erase/ignore my advice, but if you're truly wanting to decrease your pain level as you described this will most definitely do it. I hope my information is helpful to you, because chronic pain sucks, and those that don’t experience it have no idea what it like. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND I HOPE YOUR ABLE TO REDUCE YOU PAIN LEVEL. THE LORD JESUS HAS HEARD MY PRAYERS AND ANSWERED THEM, I PRAY HE DOES THE SAME FOR YOU.

My insurance wouldn't approve oxycotin until I tried open a, morphine extended relief and Fentanyl patches. I tried all 3 it affected my breathing and made me vomit so after I tried and couldn't take I was finally approved for the oxycotin
