Percocet Vs Opana

Updated

I have Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes #2, Sciatica down both legs, Piriformis Syndrome, L4 L5 S1 Vertabre Fracture x2, Osteoarthritis in my spine, knees, thumbs, feet! Chronic numbness down my right leg, groin area that hurts like hell. I started out taking Darvocet and have worked my way up to Percocet 325/10 for the last 3 years. I was wondering IF Opana would work better? My doctor wanted to put me on Oxycotin, but of course my insurance won't pay for it, not even with a required PA! So according to Medicare Part D (which I have) they need a PA for Oxycotin, but not one for Opana! Oxycotin is considered a class 3 and Opana a class 2 drug! So is Opana as strong as Oxycotin? Are they both stronger than Percocet? I tried Morphine Sulfate 10 mgs about 3 years ago, and it did NOTHING for me, isn't Opana in the morphine class of drugs? ANY suggestions will be very helpful. My pain on a scale from 1-10 is on average a 8, 24/7...Once in a great while I will feel better, after a long day of Percocet and my pain level goes down to about a 6! I take 180 percocet a month, that is a little too much acetaminophen for my liver! I was reading up on Kaiden ER which is a Morphine class drug, you take 1 every 24 hours, has anyone heard of that one and how does it work?

The Opana may be a good idea to try, it contains the active ingredient Oxymorphone and is actually stronger than both Morphine and Oxycodone.

For instance 5mgs of it would be equal to 10mgs of Oxycodone and 15mgs of Morphine.

https://www.medschat.com/wiki/Opana/

Kadian actually contains Morphine as the actual ingredient, in a time released formulation, and, if you've been taking the 10/325 Percocet, it would take 15mgs of Morphine, to equal it, or about 90mgs in a day, to equal what you're taking currently.

https://www.medschat.com/wiki/Kadian/

Another option that you may want to discuss with your doctor is the Duragesic Patch, it contains the active ingredient Fentanyl, which is a very potent narcotic, over 80 times stronger than Morphine and it is available as both a name brand and generic. One patch slowly released the medication over a period of 72 hours.

Are there any other questions?

Shelley, OxyContin is also listed as a class/schedule II narcotic, not sced III. JUST an FYI. Opana & OxyContin are both long acting ( time released) narcotics which Percocet is a quick acting narcotic. I don't know much about opana but it works the same ( stronger???) as OxyContin. As far as what works better, oxy, opana, kadian, it is different for everyone. Talk to your doc and get his take. Also, talk to a pharmacist and get their views as well. This may help you choose. Good luck

My doctor has been giving me Percocet 10/325 and Baclofen 20 mg 3 each daily for chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, spinal injury, sciatic nerve damage for the past five years. I had an allergic reaction to Cymbaltia that left me paralyzed from the neck down for 8 hours and dropped my potassium to 2.4. I now have cysts inside on every organ and pain levels 9-10 24/7. Now she wants to add Morphine Sulfate ER 15 mg. Has anyone used this combo before without any allergic reactions? Or adverse effects.

I've tried MANY different types of opiates for the same issues as you minus the diabetes. In my experience the Opana does wonders for extending the half-life of other pain killers and does wonders for arthritis pain, but absolutely nothing for anything else. I would see about getting a low dose Opana prescription alongside your percoset because it really does make them last longer, it also takes away those unfortunate cravings that make you feel like you need to take more.

Hello I'm Kenneth I'm dissbled due to a number of problems i have degenerative disc disease sciatica nerve damage my left leg gives out a lot here lately also got neckproblems. pinched nerves my left ankle has no reflexes the bend of left arm wakes me up screaming in pain and my hand aalso swells up like its gonna go numb, tingling but yet in serious pain as my spine iv learned to live with it the pain never goes away but the meds help get me through my everydaty chores and kids, So own my own willing i took a break for a year it was hell i felt like a dead man walking so for a year i did subutex so my tolerance would get back to where the meds would work again. I never abused my meds or sold them as i needed them - so by doing that i thought my doctor would like that so now i been back seeing him monthly and he keeps giving me meds i can't take. And also been on at least 3 times over bfore and i been on tons of opiates but the only ones that help have been okayed by painmanagement for my doctor to write any med that he thinks will help so i don't drive monthly to UVA in Virginia but the 2 x 60mg oxycontin for 12hr pain and 6 to 8 roxycodone every 4 to 6 hrs as needed for breakthrough pain. 15 to 30 mg was working fine cause i got more health issues than i stated i got a lot so right now he has me on 4 roxycodone ir 4 a day, 120 a month and that's it so i think I'm under medicated i think i need the long acting with the breakthrough pain meds. I'm no addict or junkie i don't sell them I'm honest and need them for my issues plus i have had more problems come along in the last few months so does that combo sound right to anyone cause he had me on just the roxy 30mg 12 a day, 360 or 380 monthly with no 12 hr med - just roxy 30 mg so to me the combo was the right way but the 10 mg roxy 4 time a day does not help much at all so i see him at 2:40pm this Thursday. So 30min and be seeing him today any help to tell or show him will help. thanks, Kenneth

Opana worked great with pain for me but I couldn't sleep with it till I got down to last week
Big problem was the burning sensation from my tummy to my throat. Oh yes I had a terrible temper I would take your head off and not think about it. Now they are putting me on OxyContin not happy they are pushing heavy drugs seems we could have started at the bottom of ladder

As you all see all medications vary from one person to the other I been on opiates for yrs now an I will say I started out with 10/325 an it did miracles in the beginning then it eat my stomach up so then I was put on opana an oxycodone ir 15mg for breakthrough pain an the opana did nothing at all for my pain it made me feel funny an dizzy followed by headaches then he switched me to morpine an it helped some at first then I noticed I was not getting any sleep the pain would only die down to about pain free only 2to 3hrs but it caused my arm s an legs to just go crazy like restless leg syndrome an what I read on kadian I'm not positive but I think it's like a 200mg tablet an more suitable for cancer patients as is the same as I read fentanyl lollipops are to iv also tried the fentanyl patch an it didn't touch my pain it never allowed me to rest it made me feel bad with nausea but I finally got put on a 12hr med an a 2to4hr breakthrough med but I'm going to go see my doctor cause the 12 hr med is not working hope this helps

I would like to know how you all got your Drs to prescribe these pain Meds and the dosage. I have Fibromyalgia, back , (two bulging discs, scar tissue from 2prev surgeries, and degenerative bone desease scoliosis, arthritis), and knee problems which keep me awake at night due to All over pain and all my dr has me on is Percocet 7.325 - 1 4x a day , Baclofen 10mg- 1. 3x a day and Meloxicam once a day. I'm reading how most of you are taking several Meds for pain n the dosage is SO much stronger and are taking way more than 4 pills a day. I wish I could get my PA to give me more or stronger Meds to control the pain level I'm in so I could get a decent night's rest! However did you guys get your Drs to prescribe them to you? Any help appreciated. I'm not just trying to get more to abuse, in Any way, shape, or form, just want pain not to be so bad that I cannot even sleep at night. I dread nighttime because the pain ALL OVER is SO bad!

Opana is 2x the strength of oxy' s. I personally think they work better. They are in the oxymorphone family (morphine) .

I was prescribed opana and it affected me in a really bad way. I told them I couldn't do it anymore and was basically black balled from the conglomerate pain group and told I was not a cooperative patient. This was 4 months ago in my attempt to get a new doctor after mine had retired.

Obama is twice as strong as oxycontin. I'm on 10 mg 3x day. So you would need 20 mg of oxygen to do the same. I didn't like oxygen it didn't work for me. Try it.

Yes opana is stronger. Evidently the difference didn't work well with me. It did make me wonder why Percoset was something that couldn't deal with.

oxymorphone is not morphine. It is what oxycodone turns into when your liver absorbs it.

One of my doctors expressed wonder that they were concerned about Percoset when opana was certainly stronger.

My insurance wouldn't approve oxycotin until I tried open a, morphine extended relief and Fentanyl patches. I tried all 3 it affected my breathing and made me vomit so after I tried and couldn't take I was finally approved for the oxycotin

Shelley, your story sounds much like mine. OxyContin did nothing for me (the ER), and my pain mgmt wanted to put me on fentanyl, 50mcg, which I didn’t like to take that much pain medicine and get hooked on fentanyl. I had done a lot of research on OPANA 10mg (IR) and they work great. I’ve been on them for about 2 years now. I have read that 1 (10mg) opana is about equivalent to 3 (10mg) Percocet and they worked for me. Matter of fact I just had back surgery yesterday due to a bulging disc that was so large it was cutting my blood flood and nerve damage to my sciatic nerve on my right side. The neurosurgeon said it was one of the largest bulging disc he has seen in a very long time. Some others in the surgery room had never seen one that big and one day after I have no pain in my leg at all, just some pain around the incision site, which is expected after the surgery. I have zero pain and just have to baby the incision from the surgery. But to answer your question OPANA IS DEFINITELY STRONGER THAN PERCOCET, and personally, I wouldn’t mess with OxyContin at all.

Please NOTE, SHELLEY IM NOT A DOCTOR OR ANYONE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD, but I know what works for me. “AFTER MY SURGERY, I CAN’T WAIT TO BE ABLE TO COME OFF OF ALL MY PAIN MEDS”. Which will take a little time but I can see the light at the end on this dark tunnel I thought I never would have seen. Now, Shelley, these Opana 10mg are not going to make you feel “high”, and if that’s what you're looking for just erase/ignore my advice, but if you're truly wanting to decrease your pain level as you described this will most definitely do it. I hope my information is helpful to you, because chronic pain sucks, and those that don’t experience it have no idea what it like. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND I HOPE YOUR ABLE TO REDUCE YOU PAIN LEVEL. THE LORD JESUS HAS HEARD MY PRAYERS AND ANSWERED THEM, I PRAY HE DOES THE SAME FOR YOU.

I had 3 spinal operations, nerve damage, chronic pain & more. Btw, from a surgeon who lost his license, kicked out of his partnership & the state with a long list of legal suits unbeknownst to me beforehand. No doctors would respect my pain & address it properly. I finally was referred by a person who suffered the same to an out of town doctor. After years of suffering, wanting to die to end the suffering, & being over medicated with junk that didn't address my pain by local dr, I finally took this person's advice. The new Dr cleaned the slate of 7 non effective pills & just prescribed one. Methadone. Wow! A miracle. So easy life became. Just one pill, once a day, addressed the pain correctly & I finally got relief both physically & mentally. After so many experiments on me, putting my body & mind on an endless roller-coaster of hell, one Dr with 1 pill made me functional finally. Then a new Dr comes along & tries to fix what's not broken. Living hell all over again. I was put on opana. That is the most horrid med I have ever experienced! I was a nervous wreck & completely out of my mind. I begged to be taken off of it. That pill should be erased! Then another Dr puts me on a type of oxycodone that breaks down into opana knowing I cannot take opana. I wondered why I was having all the same crazy wacked out side effects as i had on straight opana. I told him to get me off this oxy devil pill. He explained that the oxy breaks down into 3 types of chemicals...1 being opana. Then why did he give it to me?

I have had Percocet before, oxycodone once before against my wishes, and I never had these nerve wracked side effects. So, my warning, stay away from opana. And my question, were those other oxycodones, like percocet, not breaking down into opana? Also, knowing that opana is like morphine, which I refuse to take, he offered me that or Percocet (which is oxycodone). I don't get him. The only thing that worked for me, the dr takes away and all the things I can't endure, he offers. What nonsense! All by the whim of a governor who knows nothing about the torment of chronic pain & cruelty of putting patients on physical roller-coaster rides of changes! I never abused any medication, have a perfect record, perfect pill count, certified as a non addictive personality, didn't die, & finally able to help my child have a life...drive to grocery store, feed her, let her have a birthday party, trick or treat, have friends, play sports, etc.. Then the law changes & robs "2" lives once again! Once again, the fridge went empty, we both went hungry. I was in too much pain to drive, let alone shop, etc. Whoever keeps making up these rules & changing up the rules have NO intimate idea what they are doing. There are more side effects than just from pills! It's destroying lives & extra lives depending on their parents to be functional. Children think their parents are mad at them from the permanent scoul look on face not understanding its from pain. It effects offspring emotionally. Not only is the patient scarred & in misery but it causes kids to be emotionally scarred. Please just let doctors treat patients according to what works best for each individual as they were supposed to be trained to do. Stop suffering us sufferers even more than we already chronically do.

I'm Ken. I'm 39 and have been disabled since age 24. my spine hurt so bad the day I woke up an couldn't get up my legs. I felt acute pain an had no clue what was going on so I got help to get up an went to the doctor. they said I was fine then after 10 more doctors 1 said a bulging disc and loaded me up on lortabs, Percocets and Valiums, and then after few years my gut was gone from Tylenol in the pain meds so I took meds for that. It healed in 3 years. By then I went to UVA in Charlottesville Virginia and saw a top ranked spine doctor. after that day he said you are too young but your spine is like an 80 year old man, you got DDD bad. most discs from the lower spine up to below my shoulder was deteriorated, so like bone to bone. so he said no surgeries, pain meds for the rest of my life. At that time the only type of meds I had known about as a teen was Valiums, Klonopin, LSD, beer and cannabis. so I went to his PM Doctors and 4 of them diagnosed me an said what I needed to be on and absolutely no Tylenol. so I got 2 30mg Oxycontin real OC er an 15mg max 8 a day must last 30 days and I live in Virginia but from my house to them was 3hrs there an 3hrs back so they sent a recommendation letter to my family doctor an asked if he would mange my pain and he said yes. so all these yrs go by and I've been on high amounts of a lot of opiates then I got alot worse. it moved to my neck and I got fibromyalgia bad. my leg blows out all the time. I can't sleep. at age 36 i was on 30mg oxycodone ir 360 a month, 12 in a 24hr period. did that for couple years. never abused them. I was dependent on them as I got through everyday on them. outta nowhere i go to get my script and it's only for 120 15mg tablets and not 3 10mg Valiums to only 90 5mg tablets and I'm worse now then I was then. now he is leaving and I'm on those but I'm staying at a six and pain is not even eased but for like 1 hour. I know I will always have pain but I'm supposed to be on around the clock opioid medications 12 hr er for long-term and something 4 to 6hrs for breakthrough pain, an I got taken off that down to nothing. he said he is leaving and I need another doctor to help me and I can't find one that will help me get the right combo and amounts for all my conditions cause I should be on the type an amounts I was on at age 24 and up, but not get me to where I can't enjoy anything and my kids are wondering why I'm not able to go fishing, hunting, camping, and always snapping at anyone that ask me something. I'm not normal an I got a legitimate need to be on the opiates as they were working till after 13 to 15yrs of having a normal life and happy and now I'm worse than ever and now I really need a doctor that will help me cause I'm now under medicated and think that all those years on what I was on was working great and for no reason he just took my body in like a shock an I can't get through life like this. What upsets me most is I no some people that get tons of it from Doctors and they don't have a real legitimate reason to be on it cause they sell what they get and pay all bills and buy all this stuff and not work at all. just 2 scripts a month and they are happy and I really need it for pain and I'm looked at like I'm a junkie and I'm not. I would love to get my life back to normal. If any Doctors can help me please let me know. Thanks.
