My parents gave me paragoric as a child for very effective relief of intestinal illeness, including up set stomach. They wqould take a tespoon of it , mix it in warm water with some sugar sweetener, and it would taste like a mild licorice. Very effective..

I didn't know it was still around. As a child my parents would put Paragoric Patches on tooth aches, it worked so much better than Ambesol. Now I know why. I didn't know about the gastric thing, I have Crohn's...

I have often wondered what long term effects the use of paragoric had on the brain as an adult? Anyone know of any clinical trials? Such as memory, sequential thinking, problem solving, difficulty in math.

I took paragoric as a teenager for menstrual cramps. Worked extremely well. We got it from a pharmacist in St. Thomas, VI in the early '60's. At the time, we didn't know it was an opium derivative.

My Dad has been taking Paragoric for years for his crohns colitis and was just notified by the VA where he gets his meds that they can no longer get it. Do any of you have any contacts you can provide to us?

I took paragoric as a child because of severe headaches. It was the only thing that helped and as I got older I would tell doctors but they looked at me like an idiot. I know you could get it but had to sign for it. It is sold now but no longer has opium derivitive as ingredient. I have never had any addiction issues, never smoked and can always tell if I am drinking more than I should so I do not think it is an issue unless you have issues. I was always given a teaspoon in glass of water and never sweetened so down the glass, it tasted awful but it would allow me to sleep in rid headache that followed me from age 5 til I had a hysterectomy at age 50. Nothing ever helped and now am helped if need something by Excedrin for migraines.

I was just prescribed Paragoric for intestinal issues after having my large intestine removed. I took the RX to the pharmacy and they said they didn't have it but that they could get it from the manufacturer. We'll see, it's supposed to come in today.

Hi Megan,
If you are successful getting Paragoric could you tell me the name and phone number of the Pharmacy?

Hi Kathy,
I was successful in getting Paragoric. I'm from NJ and my local CVS called the manufacturer and was able to order it in. I'm looking at the bottle now and it says the manufacturer is Hi-Tech Pharm. The CVS phone number I use is 856-596-7010. Hope it helps! The stuff tastes god awful, but I suppose if I was used to taking shots of hard liquor it wouldn't burn going down as much haha.

Also, I talked to the pharmacist and the medicine still has morphine in it, thus why it's a controlled substance. I know some people on here said it didn't have the opium derivative. I also talked to a pharmacist friend of mine and this is what he said, it is camphorated tincture of opium (also known as anhydrous morphine) and is equivalent to 0.4 mg/ml of morphine. Yours is the normal starting dose of 5 ml (2 mg morphine equivalent). Hope that's helpful to some.

Megan - thank you so much! This will be a huge help and will make my parents VERY happy. Good luck to you! I had my colon removed in 1969 and have done really well over the years.

I'm glad I could help Kathy! Do you have an Ileostomy or were you able to have it reversed. Or did you not need one at all when they removed your large intestine? Just asking because this is all very new to me (it's one year today I had it removed) and it's been very tough. So any advice would be very much appreciated!! Good luck to you!

Yes, I do have an ileostomy and would be happy to talk, share experiences, etc. We just have to figure out how we can share our personal contact info. Do you have a facebook or myspace id?

I do have Facebook...my name is Megan Clark and my city is Marlton, NJ. I would really appreciate someone to talk to. I did have the ileostomy reversal but it had been a very tough road since having it done. Thanks for your help!

My mother and aunties all used to love a boiled lolly confectionery (sweets in Britain) called Winter Mixture. As young children we remember them unsettled and anxious if they ran out and would search anxiously down the backs of armchairs etc. Making it harder for them, sweets were strictly rationed after WW2 along with foodstuffs, fuel, etc for quite a few years (even though we were on the winning side of the war, we had to rebuild a smashed nation and pay the USA back trillions of dollars for all the help they gave us - ironically, generous Marshall Aid was just for the losing countries!) Many years later we realise that our family were addicted to these sweets! We now live in Australia and thankfully paregoric sweets are generally illegal or not freely available except in nearby New Zealand.

My daughter has a j pouch from complications of Ulcerative Colitis. It has been a tough road. She is 28 . We gave her paregoric when she was a child for colic and ear infections, It makes me wonder if paregoric caused the disease or helped early problems that eventually turned into the disease.

I WAS 14 WHEN I HAD MY FIRST CHILD. HE WAS HEALTHY AND VERY BIG FOR A YOUNG GIRL THAT GAVE BIRTH. HE HOWEVER HAD COLIC. HIS PEDITRICIAN PRESCRIBED PARAGORIC . I USED TO HAVE TO WAKE HIM UP TO FEED HIM. ANOTHER FRIEND OF MINE USED TO USE IT TO NOT HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF HER BABY. HOWEVER A FRIEND OF MINE IS IN SO MUCH PAIN BECAUSE OF A NUMBER OF BACK SURGIES AND SHE IS SOON TO HAVE A COUPLE OF MORE SHE NEEDS SOMETHING TO HELP HER WITH THE PAIN. ANY SUGGESTIONS

NOTE TO KATHY who said the VA could no longer provide paragoric...I got mine this week from the Arlington Cancer Center Pharmacy in Arlington, Texas. Don't know if they would ship it to you or not since it's a controlled substance these days. Cost me $8 on my insurance plan. Don't know what it would cost without insurance.

Regarding Paragoric, it is still available. My cancer doc just prescribed it for me. They had to order it but it only took one day to get it. I remember it coming in a tiny bottle when I was a kid and it was put on a sugar cube to hide the taste. To my surprise, I got about a pint bottle. Smells like licorice just like when I was a kid, but I now know why it was put on a sugar cube...tastes like hell and burns like hell too going down. I now see one of the reasons it put us to sleep as a kid....it chock full of alcohol besides the narocotic. About 98 proof. Between the opiate and the booze in it. In large other than prescribed dosages, it could be a party on it's own if you can take the bad taste and burn when it goes down. Works great for the gastro intestinal problem I was having.

I remember my mom giving it to me on my gums for a toothache- I loved the taste and remember it still. But I don't have addiction issues. I do put anis oil into my home made tooth paste though

My mother used to give my brother and me paregoric to keep us quiet. She kept Milk to Magnesia on hand to counteract it. (Hated the taste of paregoric, loved the MoM.) This stopped when I was about 10. As a teen I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Not as bad now (at 64) and termed IBS, but I wonder if my mother's dosing set up my guts for the subsequent problems.
