Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach, to treat or prevent conditions, such as heartburn, GERD, ulcers and Gastritis.

It is not known to cause depression, but it is really difficult to say how any one medication may affect any person that is using it.

Have you consulted your doctor about it?

I was on it for 4 months taking 1 pill per day for acid reflux.

My side effects (I'm a healthy, athletic 44 year old woman)

nausea
infection/heavy mucus in my lungs
shortness of breath
severe joint pain (could not hold a pen to write)
severe depression
edema throughout my body

I'll take the stomach acid and try to give up my coffee to help it along...

This is very beneficial to me. I have been on pantoprazole 40 mg daily for many years. The past year my doctor prescribed 2 x a day along with famotidine 40mg at bedtime. I always read side effects of all medication prescribed and some of the symptoms mentioned in the discussion I am having, tightness in the throat, intense back pain, can't sleep. I can go on and on. I am glad this topic is being discussed I never thought some of my issues could be because of my stomach medication since they are not listed in the side effects. Since several people mentioned the same concerns It has to be the medication. I am going to stop the pantoprazole will let you know if some of my problems go away.
