Updated

Does anyone know of a doctor in and around the Baton Rouge Louisiana area that will prescribe pain meds that takes Medicaid? I'm seeing a doctor now in Maryland but I really need to move back to Louisiana very sad that your pain keeps you from moving. I have a sister that is terminally ill and sad to say dying...and meds are keeping me from going to take care of her in her final days. Please help

There are several other Medicaid providers besides bayou health, and medicaid does pay for them (providing the Doc accepts it). I am unhappy with who I have and am switching but the larger problem I have is finding one I trust.... so I'm in the same boat

I live in Louisiana. The New Health System for Medicaid is called BayouHealth. Medicaid in Louisiana Will Not Pay For Pain Management.

Medicare and Medicaid Are Not Simiiar in what they will pay for.

I had broke my lower back and had to have a lumbar fusion that failed almost 15 years ago. My current pain doctor / neurologist lost his ability to write Percocet and I'm struggling on just lortab daily. The Percocet 10 mg ten a day handled my pain adequately. To keep having "something" the best my doctor could do was Lortab 10mg 270 a month. I had MRI's and nerve testing that indicates almost 100% nerve damage in the lower half of my body. I have Fibromyalgia, arthritis all over my body. I have diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. I am on a Nutrisystem diet and want to be able to exercise to help me lose weight and better my health the right ways. I am on Alabama Medicaid and having an extremely difficult time finding a pain management doctor. I could try to do a cash basis if it wasn't too great. My primary physician doesn't have a problem with giving me a referral but I have to find the doctor. I would love if the ability to "fix" my back so I could go back to work and not have to take pain medication was a reality but it is not. I have been searching for many months and need sincere help please. I deserve the right to thrive in life instead of just exist. I have a difficult time driving for periods of over 25 miles so it would be great if I could find a doctor that was close to me. I need help please to be as healthy and a productive member of society as I possibly can.

Being this is a yr later you've probably found one by now. But anyone else...just go to yellow pgs under pain mgment. Until 5 yrs ago I had best doc in town. Dr. Grey Barrows. he started me on roxy 30 mg & ms contin er 30 mg...240 oxys a day...and then suddenly he starts cutting me back on my oxys and then bang...he won't do anything but procedures. Those of us with scripts were given 1 mth meds and a kick in the booty. Fortunately I found dr next door. Get this...5 yrs later and half the meds I use to take...1 day walk in & dr. Walter Ellis hands me mth script & says hes retiring. Yea to the joint. His assistant Terry Braud was writing scripts for fake patients and selling it on the street. Due to this & being their patient no one wanted to take me on. It took a mth &s half to gind doc. I went into withdrawal...even had to go to street. I didn't do anything wrong but was persecuted for their crime. Go figure. Try Interventional pain Institute. ..dr barrit Johnson.

Medicaid will pay for pain management as long as u can find a Dr that accepts it. my Dr was a legit pain management Dr And now He left the clinic I'm at and started his own practice and no longer accepts Medicaid. but the other doctors still there, not pain management doctors, are willing to still treat me because of my neurological problems and the fact that I'm not taking an insane amount of medication. pain management is just that. u have to learn to manage ur pain. not numb yourself. and i don't care if i see a pain management Dr or a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon or a pcp. as long as i get help. cuz for a year and a half i saw my pcp who gave me tramadol, flexeril, and gabapentin which as little as the tramadol helped, i couldn't get out of bed without it. and that whole time i went to one referral after the other and by the grace of god i found a Dr who took Medicaid and after a new emg started me on hydrocodone, tizanidine, And a higher dose of gabapentin. just because u can't find a Dr doesn't mean u should make other people lose hope that they will ever find one. keep looking people. i promise u they are out there. i had almost given up before i found my Dr. i could hardly walk cuz my spine is so unstable. I've already had three surgeries and I'm only 30 and yes they were necessary cuz the herniated discs were deforming my spinal cord. and now I have post laminectomy syndrome cuz the surgeries damaged a lot of other discs. and the radiculopathy from a cyst on my sacral spine makes my legs damn near useless. on top of thoracic spinal stenosis and cervical stenosis. but as bad as i was, i never stopped looking. and neither should any of u. no one should have to live in pain and i promise , if u need help, if u go for the tests and prove that u are as bad as u say u are, u will find a Dr

You are so right .... There were so many people that somehow got these medications and sold them on the street for large amounts of money! These people are a drain on society and quite frankly; a pain patients worst enemy! I believe that before this became an epidemic that many pain patients had a better quality of life than they currently do! Doctors are afraid to write prescriptions for more than what the FDA guidelines recommend! I am grateful that after I went though a few months of hell after I retired and moved that I finally found a doctor who has restored my quality of life! I only agreed to let this new doctor do steroid inj. because I was in so much pain and was desperate for relief! I was not expecting anything good to come of them however because I have had so many different shots including steroid inj. over the past 15 years; all with with very disappointing results! To my amazement, I got a great deal of relief from this one shot that I was able to tolerate the reduction in my pain medication which this doctor had insisted on! Although on 1/3rd less medication my quality of life is better than it was before I found my new doctor which miraculously is only ten minutes away from my home!

Please do not be afraid to try something that you have already tried if there is even a remote chance that it could help ... Praying that everyone finds better relief for their pain who needs it! Miss Patty

Posters do not be discouraged by wrongful information. Louisiana Medicaid like every state depends on 50% of their funding from the federal government. When they start restricting services prejudicially as stated by this other poster it causes harm, even death. It is unfair, and it is up to each of you once you do convince that PCP to help out and each of you have that opportunity for instance if you've been seeing one physician for years he or she WILL help if you are patient and sincere I know this, but ultimately at some point each of you should file complaints against Medicaid in Louisiana with CMS in order they question the state, put revisions in place, and open up these areas that are deficient.

Stay empowered and do not give up. I suggest also ignoring posters who are degrading you because you are on Medicaid. One day he or she may be on Medicaid and begging for help and get smacked in the face (which I sincerely hope no one else is) by some angry poster who talks down to others.

Alexis B. if there is some way you can route me elsewhere I will gladly give you the name of a wonderful PM Dr. He is in Slidell and is strictly legit. He takes Medicare, not Medicaid, but will let you self pay. As long as you have your records that you need, to verify your injuries, or disease. First you have to fax all the information to his office, along with a 1year print out, of your RX. He will then go over the records and his office will notify you, with an appointment. He is an awesome Dr. He is NOT for drug seekers and is strictly professional, but a wonderful, caring Dr. and does the best, to his ability to keep you as pain free, as possible. His appointment is $300 each visit and yes he does give a U/A on the first visit, as well as random U/A's. However, if you have nothing to hide there is nothing to fear.

Teresa, Louisiana Medicaid will not pay for Pain Management. So you won't find a Pain Managament Dr who will take Medicaid there. Finding a PCP who will prescribe pain meds for you will not be easy. I recommend you pay out of pocket if you want something for your pain. You will need copies of your medical from your previous drs if you want any dr to prescribe the pain meds.

Medicaid is not limiting hydrocodone to 720 a year. Different bayou health plans may be limiting it. But i am with amerigroup Medicaid and just spoke with them and they said they do have a daily limit but it's six a day. I asked about the 720 limit so i wouldn't be get surprised at the pharmacy when filling my prescription because my doctor and the pharmacy never warned me about the limit. And they said it could be another company under bayou health that sets a limit like that but they don't. I would suggest calling your insurance company and asking about these limits during open enrollment(which it is right now) and switch to a better one if they set such a crazy limit. And don't limit your search for a doctor to just pain management doctors. Because Medicaid has them listed but i know when i call them they don't take Medicaid so I'm sure they do that everywhere. Neurologists and orthopedic surgeons also have pain management doctors in their clinics. Not all clinics, you will just have to look. I know this because i started seeing an ortho that just lost his pain management doctor to another clinic. And so i decided to try a neurologist next, because i started having a lot of neurological symptoms, and was lucky to find a clinic that also had a pain management doctor.

My husband was also discharged from La spine and Sports med. Dr. Barrow. Has been unable to find a dr since. They claim he failed a drug panel, but they hadn't even given him one for SEVERAL months prior to discharge. I Really wanted to request the record be amended, but they will not even speak to us. He was a model patient for 8 years. No abuse or misuse issues. We genuinely believed in dr barrow, and were quite hurt and confused by this.

BL, you are wrong. There are drs that take medicaid for pain meds etc. You're telling these people wrong info. My brother gets medicaid and gets his meds from medicaid. I'm not giving out his info but it's in hammond. Also look up all drs. Neuro. Etc. Ask each individual place. Keep trying..
