Oxycontin- Why Won't The Pharmacist Tell You What Proper Protocol Is When Your Told The Prescription Can't Be Filled Because It Does Not Meet Protocol

Updated

MY INSURANCE PLAN PART D MAILORDER PHARMACY MAILS MY RX BACK WITH A LETTER STATING THEY CAN NOT FILL THE RX FOR OXYCODONE 30 MG BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MEET THE PROPER STANDARD PROTOCOL BUT WHEN YOU CALL THEM BACK AND ASK WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL OR WHAT PROTOCOL WAS NOT MET OR HOW CAN YOU FIND OUT HOW TO MEET THE PROTOCOL? WHAT CORRECTIONS ARE NEEDED? THEY CAN NOT ANSWER ANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS. THEY SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW AND THEY HAVE NO ONE IN THE PLAN THAT CAN GIVE YOU AN ANSWER. HOW CAN THAT BE POSSIBLE? WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON? I HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH MEDCO MAILORDER AND HEALTHNET ORANGE INSURANCE WHO USES CVS PHARM FOR THEIR MAILORDER.

There are some new laws going into effect and that may be making it so that are unable to fill it.

Who prescribes it for you? Is it a general practitioner?

If so, then that could be the problem, because they aren't allowed to prescribe something like this long-term anymore. Chronic pain patients will have to switch to a pain management specialist to continue getting such prescriptions.

Well it's simple. There are so many idiots that have made this issue into what it is today. If they just told everyone protocol then there would not be a reason for it in the first place.

There are new protocols that mandate a physician do something to fix your situation in stead of just giving out pain meds. They have to show a reduction on your dosage with an action plan for helping you.
This is what your insurance wants for you and i hope this is you would want for yourself.

RE: Cheryl's statement "...and I hope this is what you would want for yourself." Of course, this is what chronic pain patients want for themselves. But not every medical situation that causes chronic pain is fixable. I've followed numerous "action plans" that various doctors handed out; nothing worked. I've been to two pain clinics; the head doctor at one told me I probably just wanted attention and the doctor at the other said there was nothing they could do for me--even though he said he couldn't find my chart and had no idea what was wrong with me. Then he left. So much for "pain clinics." (The second one was associated with Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston which you think would be better than that--but wasn't.) I've spent 20 years looking for a cure or even improvement, trying everything I was told to try, doing whatever I was told to do, with no improvement. I just got worse. The ONLY thing that helps my pain is opioids. Do I enjoy this? Of course not. It's terrible to have to schedule your life activities around when your next refill is due. It's terrible to be accused of "liking the high you get" (as I heard one M.D. speaker say)--even though my meds have NEVER ONCE made me high, even the first time I took them. So you and insurance companies and doctors can do all the self-righteous talking you want about plans to get better and reducing pain meds. The fact is that some conditions just aren't going to get better; my particular condition officially has no cure, no treatment protocol, no known cause--and it doesn't just get better because I want it to.

I'm glad to have found this post. I understand your frustration and can relate intensely with your issues..
I can talk all day about why they do this, and what the real "plan in motion" is with the big pharma's and their ties with the insurance companies.. But I don't need to. What I do recommend to you, is do a bit of research on google about "Kratom" It's got similar effects of Opiates (I find it to be 9/10 the same effects, well worth it!)

Yes by effects I mean the pain relief! I didn't believe it either but trust me, I spent a measily $40 for 112grams of the stuff.. I'm a big guy so that's about 3-4 doses for me but most people that's a good ~15-20 doses or more. Cheap and worth a shot, wouldn't you say? I suggest looking for a Kratom Bali plant. There are many different types, but Bali seems to work best for pain in my honest opinion.

Good luck to you and yours, and have a wonderfully prosperous and enjoyable new year! Hope this info helps others as well! Spread the knowledge, spread the wealth, spread the love.

I take Norco and i know i used to be able to have it mailed 90 day supply but now i have to go into her office every month and fill them myself at the same pharmacy. Call your doctor they are up to date on the current laws going into effect. Good luck!

I know my insurance policy limits oxycontin to 2 pills a day. However they do not limit the size. So if you took 3x 30mg a day for 90 mg per day you would have to change your meds to something like 1x30 + 1x60. Also have your doctor office call about there requirements. Lot of the stuff that is told today is what pharmacy/insurance doctors have made up to put he blame of the DEA. For example only pain doctors can fill opiate medications.

I realize this is an old thread but…EEK, my skin crawled at Cheryl's post "I'd hope thats what you'd want for yourself". UGH. A self righteous nincompoop obviously never been in pain. I won't type the curse running thru my mind for this person right now. A witch of the first degree.

I am on a methadone clinic in Boston Massachusetts and I'm moving to Hawaii in 30 days. I need to transfer, but Hawaii said they don't take Medicare and I would have to wait till I could get insurance but don't know how long. Does anyone know how easy it would be to get methadone shipped from my old clinic to my new address? Or a clinic in Honolulu Hawaii?

Your dr can find out what the protocols are. Also the protocols differ from one Prescription Plan to another. I do not know where some people get the idea that a pcp can't prescribe pain meds for chronic pain long term, but it isn't true. I wish they would post a link with this information.

moe, Medicare is accepted in all 50 States, which Hawaii is one of. Although you will probably have to change your Medicare Prescription Part D Plan. If you're talking about Medicaid, that is determined by each state. Some states will not cover Methadone for the treatment of addiction.

You can't buy Methadone by the internet. You will have to have your medical records from your previous treatment clinic. Hawaii Medicaid may or may not pay for it. For Medicaid, you have to be a resident of the state for 30 days.

A lot of doctors tell you they cannot prescribe opiate medications for long time chronic pain. Most of them are not telling you the truth. My doctor is a family doctor and she prescribes my MS Contin. What is really going on is the doctor does not want the deal with the new reporting laws that most state have today. It is a lot easier to dump you to a pain clinic.

Totally agree. if anyone... including ...a doctor...a pharmacist...had chronic pain that no surgery can fix and nothing else can be done to relieve their pain they would want the same thing you and I want.....pain medication. They would be liars if they say anything different. Shame on them and anyone else that thinks they know what it is like. Walk in our shoes for one day and you would be crying.

Wow. Enlightenment, empathy, educated perspective, compassion and the realization that it's not your job to judge. We certainly want this for you and would hope you want this for yourself. A reduction in judgement, know-it-all-ness and matter-of-fact-ness in responding in a totally fake expression of caring which serves to justify a condescending scolding and pat on the head. How dare you make such a brainless uninformed statement as though you care? Basically withholding or limiting a persons pain medication will make their pain stop? You can not possibly believe this. If it were true we can simply stop making and selling all aspirin and OTC pain medications and no one would get headaches any more. One final question for you- " if you have a headache do you not seek aspirin? Please post your reply for all to see.

Wow sooooo glad it's not like that here in Canada! !! Since when does an insurance plan decide medical decisions? ??? My company paid for narcotics for almost 25 yrs...was over 2k each and every month. I'm not on them right now. But I was up to just about 3 half wks ago. But I deff do agree with you when you told this person that you would hope that they do want to get their act together :))

Actually, it's not the doctors and pharmacies that are having the issue...it's the government who is now getting involved after the FDA approved Oxycontin for wide spread use and now people are dying?

For a person who was on opiates for 25 years you sure are judgmental..How dare you and the other ***** for making a comment like that. Get your act together..This site has no room for 12 stepping. We don’t judge anyone... We are here to answer questions and to lend an empathic ear. Now if you have nothing but insults just go away.

Dont use Cvs. They will no longer fill more than a 7 day supply. Hope they go out of business. Who are they to say how long we need to be on our meds.!!!!

Hey Cheryl, sorry, but you are wrong! They DO NOT have to show a " reduction " in prescribed pain meds. Have you ever heard of intractable pain? This means that it cannot be " fixed " with surgery, it can only be treated, and symptoms managed. .open a book, you may just learn something!

This is not a monthly medication & by the time you get the script, mail it in & get it back from them, a week has past & that's too long for these schedule A drugs! You need a triplicate prescription for these type~Regulations are so strict right now, a mail order pharmacy would have to jump too many hoops to be able to fill Schedule A drugs! Timing is the issue! They can't fill it early & you can't receive it late! They may even be illegal to send through USPS? Pretty sure they are prohibited by the government!

Drs. OR PHARMACISTS will not tell you anything they don't feel your entitled to..even as far as information..about yourself, if they even SLIGHTLY feel that THEY want to believe your a "druggie". What they ALL seem to forget ....is even the worst pain management patients develop physical dependence...and do NOT EVER look forward to the pain they'll have to deal with...much less the physical and mental opioid withdrawal symptoms they'll have to experience on TOP of the true physical pain they suffer. It's TRULY...become apparent that even the worst pain patients are having to deal with WAY TO MUCH...bulls***..to experience some relief in any forms. Law Enforcement, as far as opioid prescribing practices...has WAY OVERSTEPPED their needs in moderating these issues. ITS SO easy to tell the true pain patients from the opioid addicts...or maybe, I've been dealing with too much chronic pain., and treating opioid addicts...for to long and to long or to many...but even THIS is something I shouldn't even have to be moderating...due to law enforcement (FEDERAL... SPECIFICALLY...) sticking their big ass nosed in private citizens business...) i suppose what I'M REALLY SAYING....is the group shouldn't be stepped on as a whole....vs. THEIR inabilities to deal with the law breakers...and one thing I would like to extremely highlight...is when I read someone needs "a Dr. To prescribe them 100 mgs. of Methadone a day, ALONG with the 6...30mg-Roxicodones they take with it..TRUE pain patients don't even take that much s*** everyday...And we never take ALL our breakthru pain meds like it was diabetic meds...you take it AS NEEDED ...And 30mg. Oxycodones are made for serious...and I do mean serious...pain issues...

Walgreens will not sell pain meds anymore. I found this out when they changed manufacturers - watson changed to mallinckrodt or someone else. It was making me so deathly ill i informed my doctor and pharmacist my doctor changed my rx to put no substitutions. I took it back to walgreens and they had the nerve to tell me the only way it would make me sick is if i was abusing it. I was mortified and then he told me they were no longer carrying it. Piece of s***. I am 53 years old and have been suffering with all kinds of diseases that make me unable to walk. I filed a complaint and had to find another pharmacy. Then they think your shopping pharmacies, the government is in control and someone needs to start legal action against the pharmaceutical and government, the ones who abuse this are the ones dying not real sufferers or maybe they just cant live with the pain. I take my meds for the last 5 years like i am supposed to with minimal relief but afraid to tell my doctors because i do not want to be lumped in with abusers (even with all the diagnostics) or rejected. They want us to be this way. I had to fire one p.c.p because he did not do his job and another walked out of office because of obama care. I am under pain management and have been for 5 years. It takes me 2 min to pick up my script every month until i finally insisted on them to repeat my mri. Boy they felt stupid. My condition worsened and now i need surgery. It's politics.
