Oxycodone Tolerance Issues

Updated

Hello this is the first time I have ever posted in a forum but I do not know where else to turn. So I have been taking Oxycodone off and on for about 5 yrs. I was hit by a car in AZ while I was walking and after a few MRI's I was put on 15 mg Roxicodone 5 times a day I was taking that for about 1yr now in az they are not that strict on Thier laws now sometimes I would have more pain so I would take 30 Mgs instead of 15, I told my doc and he said that happens sometimes so a few months before I left Az I was taking 30 Mgs up to 5 times a day (prescribed of course) so I end up leaving AZ and I move to Washington state the first thing I do is get reffered to A neurologist and pain management, the first thing he does is tell me I was on way to much and cuts me to 10mgs 3 times a day...... 150mgs a day to 30 Mgs a day within a 2 week period they also schedule a surgery date to do an Anterior Cervical Disc Fusion. So ....... For starters the drop in pain meds is not good I try to do the 10mgs 3 times a day and it is not working I automatically start taking more ..... Now my surgery is 3 months away and I am learning that Washington state is not an Oxy state, the doctors are so afraid of prescribing it that just mentioning pain management makes them not want you as a patient.

So I run out of my medication and I tell my doc and he says I'm over taking which qualifies as being an addict and cuts me as his patient. I automatically start the most extreme withdrawls I can imagine (now in az this never happened so this was all new me) I find another doc and remain quiet not telling him I withdrawal once a month and am running out of meds within 2 weeks ....... Surgery day comes and I get told that the surgeons office will take over my pain management, I feel relieved thinking that I could be honest and things would change so I have my surgery (the most painful surgery I could ever imagine) they tell me that I need to only take 10mgs up to 4 times a day and they tell me to deal with it and they are giving 1 weeks worth I am once again set up to fail ..... I start going to ER's because the pain is to unbearable within 1 month I'm basically banned from ER's giving me anything.... So just to give an update the surgery was a disaster my tolerance has gotten so high that I go through a script which is now 25 Mgs a day I take the whole script within 4 days A MONTHS WORTH!!! I am up to 75 Mgs per dose. I am suffering now because I cannot talk to my doctor about it because he is the 4th doc I have had in the last 2 yrs. Now I don't smoke insufflate or take them differently...... I swallow them with a glass of water I have had to make my wife see a different doc and get a script herself just so I can bolster my supply...... I do not know what to do, I have tried to go to a drug abuse clinic to possibly get help and they tell me they don't advise me to come off the meds because I legitly need them because I have real pain..... I NEED HELP has anybody faced this and what can I do to possibly fix this without moving my family back to AZ. I need a doc to take me seriously and not tuck tail and run the moment I say CHRONIC PAIN ........ Sincerely Sleepless in Seattle

I am very sorry about what you're going through.

However, the new prescribing regulations that you've run into in WA apply all over the U.S., so you won't find things any different, even if you move. These changes were universally put in place last year.

Have you tried seeing an actual pain management specialist? The new regulations require that you see a specialist for long-term ongoing pain management. Regular doctors and surgeons can't prescribe more of them for, nor can they continue to raise your dosage. Their hands are tied.

Does anyone know of a good PM doctor or clinic in the Seattle area?

These medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Just a short question. Why is it that when I take my 5 mg Oxycodone HCL tablets I get absolutely no pain relief? After taking my limit of 4 per day, I sometimes get sleepy, but no pain relief. I don't remember the pharmacy name of the tablets I took previously, but the ones that I am now taking is made by Mallinckrodt. One one side is an M inside of a little box, and the other side is scored with 05 on one side and 52 on the other. Just want to make sure they are real :) Thank you.

Dear Sleepless in Seattle, please let us know how you're getting along after all this time. My heart goes out to you, as I've undergone four back surgeries for spinal fusions, and even at age 69, I will soon undergo #5 and then possibily #6. This is extremely painful and the pain never completely goes away following surgery. I could talk for hours about the pain associated with this condition before surgery, while trying to recuperate from surgery, and forever after that. It is not to be taken lightly by any doctor, or anyone else, for that matter. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.
