Oxycodone For Pain Relief

Updated

I have been on and off oxycodone for well over 5 years now for severe back pain (I have several diagnoses). The 30 mgs. three times a day is what I have been prescribed. I have been taking them in ways other than prescribed, only the three a day for 3 years now, although I am in denial that I am an addict, and the pain seems to be lessened. Since there is less pain, am I really at a risk by administering it via other means? I don't want to go on anything stronger. I tried morphine and told the doctor what it did. It made me depressed. I am not doing what I am doing recreationally.

Hello, Candy! How are you?

Yes, when tablets are intended to be swallowed, that is the only safe way to take them.

They actually contain some inactive ingredients to form the tablets and not all of them are meant to be broken down by the human body. Normally, they are just expelled in your waste.

However, if you try to take them in other ways, you are putting these substances in your body in a way that your body cannot process them out. This may result in blockages of blood vessels that could cause heart attack or stroke. Inhalation may also cause blockages of the lungs, that could result in respiratory arrest.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been on pain management since 2008. I went from Tramadol, to codeine, and then Vicodin for many years. I held off for years and years before resorting to the much scarier medications until last summer. Now I am on 25 micrograms per hour of Fentanyl transdermal patch. And for break through pain I am taking Oxycodone 10 milligrams 4 times daily. Now this is not for everyone. These drugs have a high potential for overdose. Even if you take the exact strength & doses for years. You can unintentionally, unknowingly overdose. That’s why I held off for so many years from taking them. My pain management provider couldn’t believe how long i suffered with the drugs I was on at the time. I have several medical issues. Anyone of illnesses could easily take me out and I have quite a few of them. I have a handful of autoimmune diseases. This causes my body to attack my own body. It eats away the lining of every organ until there’s nothing left but the organ itself. Our skin is our largest organ. So my hands look and feel just awful. All the discs in my neck & back have been eaten up at multiple levels. Trigger finger, trigger thumb, golf elbow and tennis elbow. My hips are out of wack causing my pelvis and hips to be uneven. I have
fibromyalgia , Lupus, Rheumatoid that’s getting pretty bad. Especially in my fingers. I have arthritis in a few places. There are quite a few other things going on as well. But I choose to mention the main culprits to speed things up a bit. So before seeking a new pain management provider. Do your research on the hard core medications before jumping right in. If your current pain management provider isn’t addressing your needs to your satisfaction. You will absolutely need to fire them and move on to a provider that works for you. You are your own advocate, you matter! You have a voice. I wish you the best. As a relentless chronic pain sufferer I completely get it.
