Oxycodone Vs Xtampza On A Drug Screen
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I am on Oxycodone 15 mg 1 tablet 4 times a day and my doctor wants to change me to Xtampza 1 tablet every 12 hours; they would be 18 mg. is the strength strong enough? Are they the same meds just under a different name? I have a mouth test or saliva test every month. Will this show up the same as the Oxycodone on the drug screen? I appreciate your expertise in this matter. Thank you.

So I’ve been on OxyContin and oxycodone for YEARS. During the height of the opioid epidemic a couple yrs ago when doctors were dumping patients leaving them to suffer and die I was lowered from OxyContin 40 mg twice a day to 20 mg twice a day. It wasn’t easy but since I’ve lost 60 lbs my back issues are not as bad so the lowered dose still helps. Guess I was just happy to not be abandoned by my doctor like some who were forced to go cold turkey and suffer withdrawal! 2 years ago my insurance forced me to switch to xtampza from OxyContin. Slight difference between 18 mg xtampza and 20 mg OxyContin. Then last year my insurance made me switch back to OxyContin… now this year I’ve been forced to go back to xtampza! I went 5 days w/out any meds due to insurance taking their time so taking the xtampza after 5 days of no meds feels awesome. I’d love to wean off and stop being a slave to these stupid pills but my back hurts!! I realize there are many out there way worse off then myself. The xtampza isn’t that bad honestly it works pretty equal to the OxyContin. My doctor says it’s the exact ingredients so it should show up on a drug test the same, but I’m not 100% sure!

Yep it will. But know if you were on 15 s you would need at least 27 mg

Re: Tony (# 11) Expand Referenced Message

I'm sorry but they all have the same active base aka oxycodone therefor it will show up the same on a drug test, however we can run a special tests to see just how much you have been on etc.

Oh crap. That post #9 was not pertinent to this thread. Sorry. Just got too excited seeing a doctor put light on the non-crisis!

Re: MSzelMd (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

MSzeIMd, thank you. There are pharmacists and doctors that choose to use the "epidemic" to curtail what they believe to be a grave social sin. They are all about seeing they do their part correcting the social scourge...Opioids, the new dirty word. Opioid users, the new abusers, like "potheads" in the 70's, must be controlled. Funny, they are trying to control, not wayward children, but in their minds, wayward adults. Shame a child, shame an adult, what's the difference? Shame is an effective tool. Pill counts, pee tests. PAIN MANAGEMENT. Pain management used to mean, to control a patient's pain. How very logical. But now it requires a specialist.

Thing is, kids use drugs for recreation. Adults use pain meds so they CAN recreate. Enjoy life. So they can work. So they can raise their families and participate in activities associated with family. This epidemic is convenient blame for society's ills. They took a normal part of the human condition, pain, and are managing the @%#$ out of it. Funny, all this managing resulting in more pain UN-managed.

#2- tylenol affects the liver and is toxic to the body that is why doctors as myself are moving away from percocet. Also there is no guidelines only suggestions hence we use our own knowledge of our patients to decide what is best for them. This medication will show up as oxycodone and oxymorphone(metabolite). As far as the opioid epidemic there is none year after year the prescriptions done opioid ones have been going down and down. Actually ABC did a special on the real figures and talked to many doctors on an hour long editorial and found the numbers going around from the CDC aren't even remotely accurate and anyone doctor or patient or even people that do not require opioids can dig and see that the figures of true overdoses is not even 1/4th of the numbers the CDC released.

I’m not sure I’d like to find out if the two medicines show up the same. I put my Xtampza in my safe and was taking my Oxytocin so not sure if it’s shows up

Does xtampza and percocet show the same thing on a urine analysis?

As you may already know, Percocet is only labeled for the short term treatment of acute episodic pain, not chronic around-the-clock pain. Your doctor clearly wants to move you over to a drug that is specifically for use in chronic pain (such as extended-release oxycodone, which is what Xtampza is). Percocet is oxycodone too, but it also contains acetaminophen which is known to be associated with kidney disease and bleeding in the digestive tract when taken over a long period of time. So your doctor is actually doing the responsible thing putting you on a drug that is specifically labeled for chronic pain. Given the widespread opioid epidemic in our country, many doctors are now trying to follow and abide by industry guidelines/prescribing information as it relates to opioids after years of ignoring them, which helped spur the crisis in the first place.

As some do experience when switching from one opioid to another, you may find Xtampza provides less pain relief in the first few days/weeks than the Percocet regimen you were taking previously. Don't assume that Xtampza just doesn't work. Your doctor can titrate your dose up to find which works best for you.

Good luck.

Hi my doctor did the same to me. I was taking 4-6 Percocet 15mg daily. He cut me down on Percocet to the Xtampaz. I have chronic pain in my back. It basically cripples me. I just don't understand why he would do this considering the Percocet worked very well for me for the past 3 years. Very confusing and very frustrating.
