Opana 5mg Ir Vs Er - Which Is Better?

I injured my back & neck in 1998 & 2001. I have herniated dics L4-L5, & L5-S-1 and Bone Spurs in my Neck.

I started out with a Worker’s Compensation Doctor. However they started to deny more & more treatment as time went by. In the Fall of 2014 they denied my Pain Medications. At that point I went to Kaiser Permanente Medicare, if they would treat me for by painful back injury & they said they would, I continued with Opana & Topamax. However, they do not put you “under” for Epidural shots” so I only had a few. They are just too PAINFUL! A local sedative just doesn’t do it for me.

I’ve been on Opana 5mg. 5 times a day, for many years. Last year my Primary Care Doctor at Kaiser asked me to reduce it to 4 times a day, Yikes! I’m barely making it through the day.

That why I’m asking you about Opana ER. I need something that lasts longer. Since 2001, I’ve been prescribed the usual Tylenol 3 then 4, then Vicodin ES. Then OxyContin, Morphine and lastly I was put on Opana. I may have left out a few pain medications. They had me on a cocktail of medications for a while. Then I stopped the madness and said No! We need to reduce my Meds to 1 pain medication. so I can function.

Throughout this time I’ve had epidural shots, chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, and neuroscopic low back surgery. Not necessarily in that order.

Please tell me what you think? I really need something a little stronger & lasts longer. I will talk with my PCP. very soon. I just want to know what to ask for!

So first off when you say Opana you really mean oxymorphone. Cause Opana was pulled off shelves anout 2yrs ago. 2nd is ive been on oxymorphone 30mg and now am on the 20mg ERs. The 30s were PERFECT they helped the pain sooooo much and I could still function. But for some reason these 20mgs are garbage, it takes 2 to 3 20s to get the same relief as one 30 and my doc will not bump me back up no matter what I tell him. He's went as far as telling me to put it under my tongue and let it dissolve, to crushing it up and swallowing it. So if that doesn't tell you what kind of jerk he is then... But I also have tried the 10mg IR'S and hated them they did nothing for me even took 2 at once and still no relief. So if your only taking 5's then yea I'd try to get the 10mg ER and try to see if that helps you n go from there. I'm sorry you're in so much pain please keep me posted and let me know what you decided to do.

Yes, the ER stands for extended release, so it lasts longer in the body and can give better pain control in some people that take it.

The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, constipation, headache, and dry mouth.

It is worth asking your doctor about it.

By the way may I ask what mg of oxycontin and morphine you were on? I only ask for some point of reference being that you are only on 5mg of oxymorphone IR? You said you were going to talk to your PCP have you done so yet and if so what was the outcome. Im interested to know cause I don't find that many people on here who are prescribed oxymorphone and I like to get a feel on how it works for other individuals Thanx for gour time and looking forward to hearing back from you

Pregabalin is great at treating pain. If you get prescribed a 300mg dose you will see what I mean.
