On Methadone Maintence Program And Have A Bacterial Infection Similar To Cellulitis.. Cipro Causes Withdrawal Symtoms.. Can I Take Keflex Or Leviquin

Updated

Have had this infection only 2xs prior in my 53 years.. Been on Methadone Maint. for many years.. Previously was prescribed Cipro and felt like i was going to die beside the sickness from the infection,,also was given Leviquin before that . What is the BEST ANTIBIOTIC that goes right to the infection site without adverse REACTIONS ??? Ive heard KEFLEX ?? I am on 35 mgs. of methadone daily. Thanks so much.

Hello, Gigi! How are you doing? I am very sorry about the infection.

You should talk to your doctor about prescribing Keflex, it's the one that's listed as being safe to use with Methadone.

Normal side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Is there anything else I can help with?

thank you,,i have been on keflex now for 2 weeks n am doing well...Dr. just gave me a second round of keflex but no adverse reactions with the methadone... my side effects are dizziness and extreme tiredness but much better than Cipro !!! Word to the wise.. Never take Cipro with Methadone ,,it will more or less deplete the methadone and you will go into withdrawl.

While on methadone maintenance, I had an abscessed tooth and was prescribed amoxicillin. By the third night I noticed my methadone was not lasting until morning. It's been getting worse, this morning I couldn't stand it anymore so have in and took my dose at 6 am, though usually I don't take it until closer to 9. The amoxicillin is the only thing different, so I have to assume that's what is causing this. I ended up having an emergency dentist pull the tooth two days ago and have continued to take the antibiotic as a precaution, however after this morning, I think I may stop.

Keflex I found out thru the clinic is ONE that WILL WORK WELL WITH METHADONE... Good luck and Feel Better. Ask your Dr and Clinic what they think and change your antibiotic. I found out the hard way, thought I was gonna die, I was soooo sick. Signed, Gigi.

I just got an RX from my doctor for Keflex for Bronchitis that he felt could easily turn in to pneumonia. He doesn't know I'm on Methadone (it's my experience that doctors treat you differently when they know you are on Methadone) so I couldn't ask him about possible drug interactions. I took an antibiotic called Rifampin one time, one the third day I realized that any methadone I had stored in my liver and my dose were being destroyed by it, I became completely dope sick like never before I could hardly talk due to my whole body shaking, I couldn't eat without throwing up. I remembered that on the back of my ID card from the clinic had a list of medicines on the back not to take and there it was in the small print - do not take rifampin it will cause instant withdrawal. So I'm really afraid to take this but my lung are filling up with fluid and getting close to pneumonia.

You guys solved this one! I was going to suggest Keflex (cephalexin) or Ceclor (cefaclor). However, in most states you now MUST disclose to your doc if you're taking Controlled Substances prescribed by another licensed prescriber. I see what you mean about being treated differently, though, but interactions are tricky things. Btw, Addiction Medicine is NOT a recognized medical specialty; there are Residency Programs and NO Boards to pass. The Society for Addiction Medicine (SAM) is self-created and I've met some dangerous doctors claiming to be Board Certified in Addiction Medicine. I'm a nice guy and been told I can correct and instruct without being intimidating...but there is NO talking to these people, not rationally, at least. I treated a 18-y/o boy whom I diagnosed with a Major Depressive Disorder. This SAME guy was his FP and he treated addicts petty much pro bono. The boy said he ordered him to stop MY meds (we were still building the cocktail) including virtually harmless (most of the time) Trazodone for insomnia. This kid was a nice boy and finally motivated to quit. He had been detoxed but as Dr. NoSpecialty's patient. I confronted that doc and reminded him that it's a serious, punishable violation to interfere with another practitioner case or tx. "Especially since I have more degrees after my name than a thermometer!" He turned out to be an NA zombie. Showed all the classic signs of an indoctrinated cultist. That was scary, so much so that I reported him to the Office of Professional Discipline. The advice you got on KEFLEX was spot on; it's a good, safe, time-proven cephalosporin antibiotic. Cardiologists like my big bro often use it for patients on Coumadin and multiple other meds.

Sorry I didn't get to this page first. Keflex is an exceptionally safe drug. You know even stinks write for meds for family, and I've written for Reflex dozens of times form Mom, Dad, Sister and even for me! I'm concerned about the Cpiro family of drugs (flouroquinolones [sp?], including Levaquin, Avelox, etc., because they can cause C/ deficit — really bad diarrhea is the first sign — and THAT can kill you. It did one of my colleague's father, but when he told me, "Only one dose," I reminded him that the COD HAD TO BE a severe immediately, allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock.)

You did a great job! Good-Reasoning, good knowledge of pharmacology and relative toxicity of this antibiotic. Common sense plays a huge role in the selection of drugs. I COULD prescribe Chloromycetin (chloramphenicol) for acne— but it has a habit of causing APLASTIC ANEMIA, usually fatal. First cases or Patient Zero was a 15-year old doctor's son with excellent reading skills. He skimmed Chloromycetin samples from his Dad's office. (It's not a Controlled Substance and the DOC for typhus. I know one R. Ph whose life it saved. I was first year resident.)

Whatever you do don't ever take Rifampin, within 2 days my body had "used all the Methadone my body stores in my liver" and I was in withdrawal so bad I didn't have the strength to get out of the car and they had to dose me outside in my car. So my advice to anyone else that have to take an antibiotic is: DO NOT TAKE RIFAMPIN

See a Board-certified Infectious Disease specialist, AS you may know, all specialists are INITIALLY Board-certified in Internal Medicine (and even we shrinks get a dose, but not the whole program). One of these guys can order cultures and determine the best antibiotics, optimal dosage, duration of tx and follow up as well.
