Nucynta Effects

Updated

Hi there, I am currently taking oxys for my chronic pain, which work very well for me, but my dr has just given me a script for nucynta which is a fairly new drug. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these and if they can give me any info regarding the effects, if any, side effects etc compared to oxys? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance for ur time

I haven't used it, but I can provide you with some basic information on it.

Nucynta contains the active ingredient Tapentadol, which is a centrally acting analgesic. It is related to opiates, so the side effects it can cause are very similar and may include: nausea, dizziness, constipation and dry mouth.

Is there any one that has used this and can provide more information?

I've been using this medication for over a year now with significant success. If your insurance will atleast partially cover it, its well worth trying for chronic pain, ESPECIALLY nerve related CP. As some anti depressants are now being used for nerve related CP, Nucynta gets roughly 40 percent of its action from Norephedrine reuptake inhibition. Its primary mechanism is still via the Opioid Mu receptors (the same ones hydrocodone and others affect) but the difference of adding NRI activity is very noticeable in terms of pain relief. It also makes the medication less "drowsy". Its considered less addictive than Oxycodone but still has a potential for abuse....with this being said this medication builds tolerance considerably slower than traditional narcotics, so the same dose you take now should work nearly as well a few months from now.

As for side effects, these mostly occur if you accidentally take a second dose miss timed (too close together) as the effects seem to ween down a bit slower than traditional narcotics due to its NRI activity. However, they are substantial in higher doses vs lower ones on almost a curve. For example, 75 mgs vs 150 (taken only at this dose for break through) the effects seem X4 instead of X2. At the 75 mg dose, I generally have few side effects and my cognitive abilities seem to be better than that of when I was prescribed traditional narcotics for my CP. One side effect is increased well being. However, occasionally this can mean a bit too much energy and over talkativeness. At 150 mg dose, I'll experience a total relief of pain but in exchange, ill experience potent anxiety and sometimes it'll feel like my chest/neck is tightening which makes it harder to breath. I believe this might just be a side effect of the increased anxiety. At the 150mg dose, moderately-mild "quick" hallucinations generally occur, such as hearing faint music that doesn't exist, corner of eye, distant items appear "differently" for a split second, not to mention surreal closed eye daydreaming that's very lucid. Again at the 50-75mg range, these two side effects shouldn't occur often and should be minimal if they do. Ultimately the pros far outweight the cons. Just watch your dosing, use only what you need, and you shouldn't have too many side effects.

Ohhhh one last thing. This medication WILL dehydrate you if you do not drink water adequate while under the medication.

Nucynta gives me 100% relief of my sciatic nerve pain. Unfortunately, the minute I take it, I have to lay down or I get nauseous. I call it the LSD/Reiki drug because my mind becomes very active and I have incredibly vivid thoughts. It also feels like I am getting Reiki because I can feel the drug going to work where I have nerve pain. It does not help me with any other type of pain. I am prescribed 4 doses a day. I take about 2 doses a month. I use xanax daily for muscle spasms. I feel no side effects the day after, just relief from having the pain diminished.

I have taken Nucynta for 2 yrs. for Occipital Neuralgia and chronic Nerve pain. It has really helped my pain unless I have a bad flare-up. I take it with Oxycotin extend release.

I have been on Nucynta for 2 months & every time I take it I get nauseous & I've vomited a few times. It totally takes away my neuropathy, but doesn't totally relieve back pain. What bothers me is a new Dr came into my pain clinic & took me off my Percocet 10mg 3x a day because he claimed it wasn't in my system.... Due to this he came to the conclusion 1) I'm either taking them all the 1st few days 2) I'm selling them 3) my body isn't metabolizing them I am a nurse & find accusations insulting, I told him this on my 2nd visit & he didn't remember saying any of the above !! Oh and before he gave me Nucynta he wanted to give me Dilaudid but I refused. New laws, rules, regulations has Dr's doing all kinds of things & patients suffer.

I have been taking Nucynta for about a month. I had a total knee replacement 10/21. have severe osteoarthritis and intolerance to most pain meds. Nucynta has worked very well. No nausea whatsoever. Please understand, I'm not downplaying others' nausea issues. Everyo,e reacts differently. That's why my surgeon tried it; I had the other knee replaced 5-6 years ago & couldn't keep anything down. I get good pain relief. Initial post surgery dose was 100 mg every 4-6 hours. I am down to 50 mg 2x day.

Hi. I am a pm patient with arachnoiditis, radiculitis, degenerative disk and facet disease. I know everyone is different as far as side effect but I was changed from 60mg of morhine sulfate a day to 300mg of nucynta er a day. I've had horrible migraines, nausea, tremors, and agitation with this med. I hate it. I've heard some have better luck with it than I have but this past month has been torture just trying to give it time to actually work but it's not. I have my one month checkup tomorrow and I have never looked forward to a dr visit more than I am now. The Dea is messing with everyones health by restricting meds especially to those of us that need it. They took me off of the fentanyl patch which worked wonders for my pain and helped with my sleep at night. They took me off of my Klonopin that helped with my anxiety and shakes I get when my spine is inflamed. Medication I had been on for 5-6years and had a better quality of life they now tell me isn't safe. How safe is it that I'm in do much pain my blood pressure is up and I can't do anything I need or want to do. How safe is it when you get to the point you do nothing but take up space!? I hope drs read this and undrstand what they're doing.. animals aren't allowed to suffer but humans are!?? I hope you stay with what you know helps you. Prayers for all who suffer with pain daily. Sorry for the rant....

I have been on both Oxycotin 30 mg-2x a day and Oxycodone 15 mg for break through pain both of these were working very well for me. When suddenly the Oxycotin was refused by the Insurance Co and I was put on Nucynta ER 150 mg 2x a day. I have been keeping a diary since I started taking it on the 14th of this month. I was told I had to try 3 medications before the Insurance Company would give the approval for the Oxycotin. I am really no longer getting the relief from my pain, which is from Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome and MS. It makes me angry that Insurance Companies are given the power to override a doctors orders and take anyone off medication that has been working for them for years. It is us Patients that have to suffer and it appears that no one really cares...

I'm on it now.I just came off from Methadone 10mg & It's not as strong, nor is it as strong as oxytocin or oxycodone. I'm on the 50mg Nucynta. The benefits to me are better as far as less side effects. You still get the warm feeling but no itchyness. Although be very careful of the serotonin levels. Stop taking fluoxotine if you're on it. It will give you serotonin syndrome.

JoJo,

That is most unfortunate however there is a solution. If this medication provides you with the quality of life that others fail to, you are not forced to settle for a less effective medication, simply pay out of pocket. I know several people that have opted for this alternative. All the money in the world can not buy you the freedom of pain control....

I agree with you 100%. I have been on 1 OxyContin 40 mg tablet 3x day for 14 yrs using" 2" 5/325 Percocet tabs for break through in between. Last year I had that problem with insurance & was put on Opana. It made me deathly sick or so I felt like I was . My doctor got the insurance to approve the OxyContin again. This Year I am back to square one except I am now on the Nucynta 200 mg 1 tab 2x's day. I can still use my breakthrough med's as I was. I have been on them 2 wks and in pain so bad. I can't sleep, I do not feel like do anything period I hurt so bad. I have have degentive disk disease. I have had 2 cervical surgeries leaving me with a plate & 15 screws in my neck. I've had 14 Lumbar surgeries, I know I have a cage and rods & screws. God only knows what has been done to my back. I've also had a reverse r shoulder replacement. This has all been within the past 15 yrs. my last Lumbar surgery was in 2014. This doctor cut my back open from the top of where my bra is down to where my hips begin. I am in constant 24/7 pain . The OxyContin along with my breakthrough has been the only thing to help me at all . It just makes me sick & angry that a person with Known Proven Pain & Health issues can be done this way needing treatment 24/7. I am soon to be 67 yrs old and 15 yrs ago I would not even take an aspirin. I had, had a historectomey "Sorry I Know that's not spelled correctly." & 3 hernia repairs and as I said would not take anything. So for what it's worth I feel for any of you that suffer with pain. I just hope & pray that the insurance companies will start feeling this way without going through or suffering with pain as some of us are trying to live with. God Bless you all !

Hi, I've had to go from 40mg OxyContin 1 tab 3 x day after being on it for 14/15 years to Nucynta 200mg. I've been on it 7 weeks, "7 MISERABLE WEEKS" The Nucynta just like the OxyContin last about 8hrs if that long. Reading about it, says you can take 600mg a day. Insurance will only cover 2 tablets a day. I cannot sleep, my blood pressure runs high and I keep getting a headache. I know that the stress from being in constant pain has a lot to do with this. It's like No One, NOT NO ONE gives a Damn. I'm sorry I do not make it a habit of cursing but this is enough to make a Preacher Curse. I know that there are people who want the pain meds for the wrong reasons I get that. When you've had every evaluation there is, disease that creates pain & surgeries after surgeries, these people know that our pain is real & we are not faking it. So we have to pay the price & suffer for the ones who do misuse. It's sad because it has caused some of those who are in pain, who they have prescribed pain meds for years and then stop prescribing them. It's like they are forcing them to do whatever just to deal with the pain. It has happened to a few people I have known & they are no longer here. The DEA, Insurance Companies & Doctor's know this but continue to deny them or us the meds to treat our pain. I Pray to God I am never one of those. Apparently the ones making the rules or decisions as to what to prescribe have never suffered with pain. I'm sorry I meant to answer your question & I hope I did. I just get so upset with what's happened to us.

Hi JoJo, I agree with you, it's like no one cares. The 200mg Nucynta 2x's day does little in treating my pain. I'm also on oxycodone 5mg /325 for breakthrough 2 tabs 3xday. It helps more than the Nucynta. The Nucynta has also made me nauseated at times. I don't understand why one insurance comp. covers a Med & another won't. I think I read where someone said you could pay out of pocket for the Med. This is not an option for me, not at about $1,000 a month or close to it. I also have been going to my Physciatric for years. This Year she decided to stop participating with AARP United Healthcare. I continue to see her & pay out of pocket which is not cheap. I have no choice because I can't find a Physciatric that is participating with them. You would think that the Insurance Comp would help in finding a doctor. "NOT HAPPENING" I wish you the best on the switch of your Med.

Nucynta works great for me. No more do I have to choose between pain and nausea.

I have been in this new drug Nucynta now for 7 days and have not slept in72 hours. The shivering & burning is absolutely horrific. Has anyone experienced these side effects ? Calling Dr. Today & will no longer take this drug. 22 surgeries & major pain 24 hours a day is enough to handle, without dealing with these horrid side effects

That is the most worthless medication to ever hit the market. Forget about any kind of effect. I don't know, maybe if you take the whole bottle? Please don't! The day I started my new prescription I started sweating like there's no tomorrow. I sweated my ass off until I figured out what happened, and within a few hours of my last dose I finally dried out. Now I'm on morphine ER, not too happy about it either.

My doctor gave me Nucynta 50 mg for severe nerve pain. I took one and felt nothing, so I took another with no relief still... Then I took another and oh boy, my heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. What's inside of them? No other pain med that I've taken had that kind of effect. By the way, I felt no pain relief either.

Re: Jimmy (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

Will this medication give you energy? My doctor took me off my hydrocodone 5/325. Which gave me at least some energy. Will the nucynta give me energy? Please say yes lol. {edited for privacy}.

Re: Ghost in the well (# 22) Expand Referenced Message

Well I been hearing a lot about this Xztampza drug guess a lot of people are going to that since as a,week ago Opana ER got ripped off the shelves so tons of people are scrambling around to find their replacement ER med. Luckily I get the generic oxymorphone ER'S and I've been hearing that their taking those away to even tho my PM place is telling me I have nothing to worry about. Guess I'll have to wait and see on Oct 2 if when I go to fill they either tell me no or I go get it changed to.....what ER med is as good as oxymorphone 30mg I'll tell you- nothing is not even close these things are soooooo STRONG it's crazy I've tried just about everything out there and maybe the 2 closest things would be oxycontin 80mg and Fentynel 75mcg I know cause I've tried them both but 2 problems with each drug first is the oxycontin 80's are not easily written most docs won't write for that high of a mg so I'd be lucky to get the 60's then theirs the problem with getting my insurance to cover it. Then the Fentynl is just a road I don't want to go down it's the strongest thing out there and it's been highly criticized for people abusing and OD'ing off of plus i know it does not last a full 3 days 2 at most and you get 10 a month so if I had to wait a full 10 days to get my new script the withdraws off of those are the HANDS DOWN WORST!!! And once again having the doc write for that is so hard and I wouldn't want anything but the 75mcg. and that's just not gonna happen plus highly doubt insurance will cover it. So what is a person to do???? Please any and all suggestions are welcome!!!

I'm allergic to tramadol. It makes my chest hurt. I was given nucynta 50 mg. Is it the same or in the family of tramadol? If so, I can't take it.

Personally I prefer 8mg. Dilaudid. Although I've overdosed 3 times I still crave them. Nucynta almost made me give up drugs! Now my doctor has me on Morphine Sulfate, not too happy about that but it beats the heck out of that other crap.

I hear you GHOAST IN THE SHELL, I have a friend on Nucenta 200mg 3x's a day. He HATES them. I said they can't be that bad especially if their giving these to you instead of the Oxycotin 40mg 3x's a day but boy was I wrong!!! He let me try a hand full and WOW WHAT GARBAGE I GOT MORE RELIEF TAKING 4 IB PROFIN 800MG.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DOCTORS ARE THINKING THAT NUCYNTA IS EVEN IN THE SAME RELM AS A VICODIN LET ALONE A SUBSTITUTE FOR OXYCOTIN!!! THE DAY MY DOC THINKS HE'S SWITCHING ME IS THE DAY I LEAVE AND GO TO ANOTHER PM.
BUT I DON'T THINK THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN MY PM DOC IS AWESOME AND I LOVE MY OXYmorphone 30mg ER it blows everything else out of the water.
I hope you guys that are unhappy either talk with your doc and get changed back to what worked for you or just take your business elsewhere
