Not Receiving Pain Relief From Fentanyl Patch

Updated

I never took any pain meds before my accident. After the accident and surgeries I found that I was allergic to most pain medications and did not find relief from any of them.

My pain clinic docs put me on 150mcg of Fentanyl Patch with leaves me in horrible pain. My docs dont believe me when I tell them I am still in pain, and say that this is the best med they have for me and there is nothing else. They say that I am taking the highest dose recommended.

I am allergic to the glue on the patch and most tapes, tegaderm causes more blisters around the edges of the patch also. The only way I can stand having the patch on and not ruin my skin is to take it off for a while and move it to a different location.

I also have dilaudid 4mg for breakthrough pain along with gabapentin and tzanidine for spasms. Its like not taking anything at all. My docs ordered me to take them 3x day whether I thought they worked or not.

Breakthrough meds don't work. The patch doesn't relieve the pain. What can I do?

This problem seems to be a family type issue as my brother, sister, and sons all have the same results from pain meds as I do. (we do not feel any relief or show any signs of taking the meds, ie sleepy, drowsy, slow b/p, slurry speech etc)

My docs think I am crazy or seeking more drugs, NOT SO. If my family did not have the same problem maybe I would think it was something wrong with me but with other family members having the same problem,..... well surely someone has heard of this before....... would love to hear from you

It is not common, but yes, this has happened to other people, so it's not just your family. I have no explanation for it, but it seems some people are just resistant to opiates.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Have you considered asking them about other non-opiate options? How much Gabapentin are you taking?
