No allergic reaction to mediation. My daughter has had hydronephrosis since she was 3 months old. She has specialist at Radi children hospital but I cant reach her right now. My daughter is 7 now. And her left kidney upper pole is dead but swollen. She has been taking nitrofurantoin for 4 years now. Yesturday URGENT care found out she had a BAD UTI just useing a dip stick. After just one 50mg capsule I developed a massive headache, nausea, diarrohea with blood, nose bleed and just wanted to sleep. After persevering and another 6 capsules I thought I was going to be hospitalized, in all my life I have never been so ill and could no longer function. I spoke to my Dr and she saw me immediately and was wanting me to have a CAT scan, I felt so ill I declined as I was certain it was the drug. I was then prescribed Trimethoprim, these also had side effects but manageable and of course it took several days getting over being poisoned. I have been prescribed this for repeated UTI and am on a 56 day course. But three weeks in I too have intense itching. I take one tablet at night with some food or milk and two hours later the itching starts. I find ice packs on feet and hands help and have tried taking an antihistamine one hour before but this doesn't seem to help. I have resorted to taking one of my husbands amitriptyline which helps to calm things down, and is easier than standing in a bath or cold water whilst holding my hands under the freezing cold water tap !! Not fun. I also get a shortness of breath, like a tightness in my chest. I have Nitrofurantoin that expired in 2015 - Can I still take them? I suffered from UTI's on a regular basis at that time and have not had it again until now. ## This medication does not become dangerous, once expired, but it can lose efficacy. I have been on Nitrofurantoin 100 mg every other day for many years. I have a history of a staghorn calculus and multiple urinary tract infections. I have not had any infections in the past 2 years. I am having difficulty refilling the medication now that my Endo Dr will no longer fill it, my urologist retired and my PCP never ordered it. My urologist wanted me on it permanently to prevent issues. So is stopping it a good idea? Upon being release, not only did/do I have this severe, I believe the Dr, called it, UTI infection, but I have 2 other infections, dehydration, sinunitus, pneaumonia, and infected ears. I do have a variety of medications for each ailment, however, the only one I take more than once a day is the Nitro.Mac/Mono. I am so itchy my skin looks horrible and I cannot find any type of relief. I've NEVER itched like this unless I had poison ivy and now the calamine isnt even phasing this. I am 82 and had UTI from the 1st of April. By 16th April , not better, I needed to start on my third lot of Nitrofurantoin. That day I became very ill. My symptoms lasted three days and nights. Every joint was aching. My arm was as sore as if I had bumped it. I hadn't. It hurt to turn my eyes. I had trigeminal pains and my head was aching. I read the prescription directions wrong. I'm taking nitrofurantoin for a UTI in pregnancy. The directions say every 12 hours for 7 days. I've been taking low dose 50mg Nitrofurantoin for over a year. My urologist recommended it and my PCP also said I should take it for life. I've had frequent UTI's/year and it's been a problem for more than 10 years. I've been free of UTI's since I went on the low-dose Nitrofurantoin. Hi. Has anyone else experienced visual disturbances on this med? First day I started taking them I felt pressure in my head... felt a bit strange but was happy I could cope with the effects. Second day about 1 hour after taking my first tablet I noticed I wasn't able to see all of someone's face. It progressed into the whole of my left side of my vision being distorted, similar to how it is with a migraine, but much worse. I've since stopped taking them and been given penicillin for my uti. I've searched all over the internet but can't find a similar story.
