Nitrofurantoin-vaginal Itching?

Hello! I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin for a UTI and I’m on my third day of taking it. My UTI symptoms seem to be gone however I’ve developed some pretty instense vaginal itching. Is the itching related to the antibiotic or did I get super lucky and develop a yeast infection or something? No discharge or rash just itching. If the itching IS a side effect of the antibiotic should I call my doctor to discontinue it or is it not a huge deal as long as I can handle it?

Chances are, the antibiotic, while helpful for uti, probably has caused a vaginal yeast infection. Those get worse quickly, and very uncomfortable, so by now, you may have been able to determine by the looks of things, you have a yeast infection.
You can treat the yeast infection with OTC drugstore products, but from my personal experience, I would go with a 7-day treatment vs. a 1-day or 3-day product.
In future, if you have a uti, take cranberry pills and vitamin C, and to prevent yeast infection from antibiotics, maintain a healthy pH by using a product called RePhresh. It’s a no-scent clear gel pH corrector. Works great. You can get it on Amazon cheaper than drugstores, and I always keep some on hand.

Unfortunately the antibiotics probably caused the yeast infection although if it's bad the doctor can prescribe something.or you can get a yeast infection cream OTC like vagisal.If it's internal they make the yeast creams so you can treat it internally also there is diflucan that prescribed.

Sorry to hear about the UTI.

According to Dailymed vaginal itching is a common side effect of Nitrofurantoin. Fortunately it not listed among the side effect listing that cautions you to contact your doctor. It will be up to your own discretion whether or not you feel that the itching has become enough of an issue to contact your doctor.
