New To Accutane

Updated

Hi, I'm a 38 year old female who just started taking 20mg of accutane 3 days ago. I have very persistent, moderate back acne. I have a few questions that I forgot to ask my dermatologist: what is the best lotion/moisturizer that I should use when I start having dry skin? What kind of soap should i use, as i use dial right now? Also, I have read that aquafor is a life/lip saver...is this Otc or prescription? And a question for the ladies: did you use liquid foundation while your skin was dry and flakey? If so, what kind did you use? I am just trying to prepare myself for the upcoming months. I am scared (bc of all of the horror stories I've read) but also very hopeful for the end result of CLEAR skin! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I took two courses of Accutane in the 90's as did my younger brother. We are both now living on disability and have Interstitial Cystitis, Fybromyalgia, and he has terrible insomnia where as I have CFS, ( chronic fatigue syndrome) to the point of suspected narcolepsy. I'm 40 years old and he is thirty three. We are completely and utterly disabled. To much or an overdose of Vitamin A in our systems may be the culprit. We will never know for sure. We live half lives and have never really been able to have adult lives like normal people. We both came down with our symptoms at 21 yrs old. He is also my half brother by blood. I have been thinking and researching supplements ect..
My Vit. D levels are very low and have been for a while. That can lead to problems on its own but VitA, Dand K are all related and can wreak Havoc long term on your body.
Has anyone tried an anti inflammatory diet? I'm at a loss, just asking. Please let me know if you have or if your story. Resembles mine...L

I took a 6 month course of Accutane about 10 years ago and honestly, I seem to be doing just fine. Everyone reacts/responds differently, so I wouldn't let the horror stories get to you too much. Just be aware of the risk factors and weigh out the pros and cons. For many self concious people including myself at the time as a teenager in high school, it was a no brainer decision to attack the acne with whatever worked no matter the costs. For me, dry/chapped lips was the most noticeable side effect...I swear I tried every brand of chap stick and nothing worked! Even the most moisturizing of oils evaporated on my lips within 5-10 minutes. On the other hand, I don't recall measuring my water intake which may have played a role in the severity of dry lips. So that's just something to keep in mind. Looking back 10 years later I still have the clear skin that accutane helped me achieve. However if I had read and believed all the horror stories I too would've been less inclined to jump on the accutane bandwagon. Even though many people come out perfectly fine after accutane (myself as an example) I feel that it really all comes to down the whether the risks are worth it...For me, I was willing to do anything, because nothing else had worked. Albeit, a dramatic and permanent change in my diet & lifestyle (i.e. going vegan, sugar-free, dairy-free, exercising more, etc) may have been a better first line of treatment.

Please come off it ! I had two teenagers both on roaccutane . Now in their 30's they both have joint pain with anxiety and depression . I promise you nothing is worth the price you will pay in a few years time . It will affect every single aspect for the rest of your life .

GET OFF IT NOW, UNLESS: You want to suffer thrush for 8 years destroying your libido. Becoming menopausal at age 35. Or any other long list of problems that have thankfully not affected me but others.
Also after your treatment the pimples may come back within 3-5 years.
