New Prescription

Updated

I was perscribed Effexor yesterday to treat postpartum depression and anxiety that I have been going through since I delivered my baby boy. I wanted to know if anyone had any other information on this drug. I am really hesitant on taking it since I do not want to become dependent of it and after reading some of the side effects I am really scared to take it. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

it is non narcocic and not a controled sub. like you might think of such as (valium). it is an anti deppesent, disuss your feeling with your doctor, but it is not addictive

Myrna:I use venlafaxine myself 150mg.But my best friend got prescribed the drug under the same circumstances as you, that was 3 yrs to date. But she regrets taking the drug, and to those say velafaxine isn't addictive i beg to differ!!my friend says now she could have tried many diffrent routes, all I can say is that the baby blues will pass!!! I hope you find this useful!!

Where were you 4 years ago when I was first prescribed Effexor XR, Stacey? You better believe it's difficult to stop taking!! It's non-narcotic of course but if I miss a dose I feel like CRAP! One time I decided I just wasn't going to take it anymore -- BIG MISTAKE! I've never been so ill, so miserable in my entire life.

I have been taking Effexor for 1 year and have experienced no side effects and it continues to work as it is supposed to. Additionally, I have IBS and w/ Effexor I have not had any IBS symptoms. If I take it right before bed I can't sleep so I take it between 4-5 pm. As far as becoming dependent, it's hard for me to answer that since I have the kind of depression that has lasted my whole life. Maybe someone else can answer that part of the question. I realize you most likely are no longer suffering from Post-partum depression. I post this for others who are wary of taking the drug.

I have been on the same medication for going on 4 years, and it has worked wonders for me. It is not addictive and it is not hard to get off of. You are not supposed to just quit taking an anti-depressant you have to slowly be taken off of it. If you just quit taking your anti-depressants, then yes, you are going to feel like crap , because that is your depression coming back. Depression doesn't just go away, it gets worse and worse if not medicated. Its nothing to play with. I would listen to my doctor because he knows whats best for you. Just because it worked for one person doesn't mean its going to work for you the same way though.

Any medication that you take regularly for a long period of time will cause your body to become dependent on it and you will experience some problems if you try to stop taking it abruptly. These medications should always be tapered when stopping, under a doctor's supervision.

Here's the monograph with more information on this drug:

I have been on Effexor for over a year now. It has helped tremendously with my depression, however I regret ever starting it. The effects when I miss even one pill are terrible. If I had known I would have went for another choice.

Diana, as I said in my post above yours, any substance that you take regularly for a long period of time will cause dependence in your body. It doesn't matter if it is your morning cup of coffee, your lunch time orange juice or a prescription medication.

As you use these substances regularly for a prolonged period, your body basically forgets how to operate without them, so if you stop taking it abruptly, you will experience these mild withdrawal effects.

There is a big difference between this and addiction, but it will happen nonetheless, and it would not matter if you had taken some other alternative to Effexor.

When you stop using the substance in question, your body will eventually reboot so to speak, and start taking care of things on its own again, but until it does, you will suffer some problems.

So, once again, I want to reiterate, it would not have mattered if you had used Effexor for over a year, or a different choice, you would still run into the same effects.

This is normal for over 99% of the human population.

DO NOT TAKE EFFEXOR. It is very addictive, the withdrawal side effects are excruciating. I couldn't even move my head...I felt like I was being electrocuted. There is also alot of evidence of increased suicide attempts once you come off it. I personally know 5 people who tried committing suicide.

Effexor is an antidepressant It is widely used in the US. Side effects include headache and sweating.
Very effective. The extended release capsules seem to work the best. Normally the doctor will start with the 75 mg for 1 wk, then increase to 150 mg. Normally takes 30 days for it to start working. If you do not know this, and stop before the 30 days on taking it consistantly, you will not see it work. It is not addicting, however, if taking it for awhile, it is rec. that you use step down therapy in discontinuing.

I just found out about this card ...I always filled my prescription of Effexor XR from Canada because it was cheaper, I ended up having to buy it in the states and it was $350 for 30 day supply. I was shocked and I found this chat page that somebody had posted the link to the card ...I tried it and it worked, brought the price to $30 .....so I am sharing, helping someone else I hope.

Everyone and anyone ------------ALL MEDICATIONS HAVE TO BE CHANGED OCCASIONALLY - I have a friend who's daughter in law could not find one that would stay with her - that is not my case. But if you get what I am saying see the doctor change occasionally it might help your brain..........COPE............

Jennifer,

Have you tried other antidepressants? I am bi-polar, 70 years old and have tried many. All meds aren't the same on all people. For over 50 years, a multitude of psychologists and psychiatrists have played with me, trying to find the best pill or combinations to help me. I have found Prozac (FLUOXETINE/generic) has literally saved my life.

I have taken so many pills, but I ALWAYS go back to Prozac. As I understand it, there is a symptom called "Prozac Poopout" which means your body no longer processes it the same way. Therefore you taper down the dosage and go on to something else temporarily.

Presently I take three pills for my bi/polar disease.... Every morning I take a generic Prozac 80 mg. (started with 20 mg. in the 70's), and 3 Bupropion 150 GR XL ( a total of 450 mg daily). At night I take 600 mg of Gabapentin (Neurontin generic). My son takes 1200 mg daily of Gabapentin. So please tell your psychiatrist to wean you off and replace with another antidepressant.

This arm of mental illness is hereditary. The different forms range from mild DEPRESSION to OCD, ALCOHOLISM, BI-POLAR and more. Our granddaughter is suffering with OCD, after being on opiates for five years........does anyone know of a good pill for that? It is a nightmare, she is only 26 years old. It is affecting more than seven lives.
