Neurontin Made Me Feel Euphoric

Updated

I was prescribed neurontin by my doctor. I only took 3 capsules of the 300mg capsules. It made me happy and giggly and I felt like I was floating. I didn't feel angry or as if I wanted to hurt someone as I normally feel daily. Why?

Neurontin contains the active ingredient Gabapentin, which is actually an anticonvulsant, so it works on brain chemicals, this it can cause the effects you experienced in some people, which is why there are warnings that some people are more prone to abuse it.

For this same reason, it is also sometimes used to treat mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder.

Wow. That is quite a reaction for such a small dosage. I take 1200 mg, 3 times daily. Been taking it for neuropathy for 10 years.

The feeling that I'm getting from this stuff can't be explained. I just feel good. I feel a little more care free and the Neurontin enhanced my attention a little. This stuff feels good.

I am prescribed this drug and wanted to know if anyone else felt euphoric like I do. The other patient said she feels like killing people, maybe she needs to go to her doctor and get on this cuz it makes her feel nice. And she probably never would have felt it unless she tried the neurontin. Obviously her never figured out what would make her feel better.

I also experience euphoria and wakefulness. I usually take 1,600 mg at once, then take one 400mg tablet every 2 hours for another 8 hours. It takes about 3 hours for the initial dose to kick in but when it does I babble and feel very happy. By taking the additional tab every 2 hours keeps me going. Normally this routine keeps me awake for between 24-30 hours. Tolerance builds quickly though, I can only do this routing every four or five days.

I also get happy, energetic and able to stay awake nearly 24 hours, then I get sleepy and have a great nights sleep. To get this effect I take 2400mg at once, then one pill an hour for three more hours. My wife has Asperger's syndrome with anxiety so high it reaches the moon. One 400mg capsule makes her feel incredibly calm, working with her Xanax perfectly during a panic attack.

900 mgs per day stops my RLS at night. Drowsy, not euphoric. Non-narcotic, non addictive----stick to the script.

Don't give up because it makes you dizzy/sleepy or a little loopy that will subside!
I'm new to Gabapentin, I flatly refused to take it for a very long. My Dr. prescribed it for my Fibromyalgia nerve pain in my legs and feet, joint pain, morning stiffness etc. I was at the end of my rope so I gave it a try. Wish I had done this long ago, I'm a 5'5" 121 lb female my dose is 1) 300 mg at bedtime for 5 days 1) 300 mg morning and bedtime x 5 day's.. then 3) for a daily 900 mg dose. I'm only on the Bedtime and morning day 4 so far. They told me it would make me sleepy/dizzy and boy it did even loopy actually but that has subsided just as the pharmacist said it would. I reach a deep sleep and stay asleep the entire night. My nerve pain is so much better and I'm more energetic and happier then I've been in years...My right foot swelled for two day's and I was afraid I'd have to quit it.. That too has subsided.. I think I may be having the side effect associated with children (False Sense Of Well Being) Well, who cares, it's a whole lot better then worrying all the time as I had been. :-)

Started it yesterday. 300 mg twice a day for neuropathy pain. I feel sedated and the unbearable pain in my feet and legs has decreased already. Could barely climb out of bed this morning. I was told it would take a week to kick in. The opiates were no longer working.I have great hopes for this medication.

Dear Philly L. ,
I was intermittently depressed my entire ancient life. I can remember being about 7 yrs old and sitting on the floor of my bedroom and just feeling numb. I was so unloved by my parents ang basically the only time my brother or I got attention was when we were being punished. Enough of that. My point is, that was enough to make a little girl sad but due it genetic testin 3 yrs ago, I was found to have genetic mutations in the MTHFR strand which can cause depression. My dr prescribed methylated folate. Deplin, 15mg. I amazed that, for the first time in my life, there is no black cloud over my head every now and then. It's such a natural thing, the methylated folate, the your dr. might agree to write you a prescription without the genetic testing. I suffered so much due to depression and have been free from it for 3 years. I just hoped sharing this might help you.

I wish my DNA would be sensitive in this way. It only made me drunken. Lucky you.

Dear Philly, I've had intermittent depression since childhood. My Naturopathic Neurologist DNA tested me for MTHFR b (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) anomalies. It's very common in the populace, but few of us have the external symptoms. Oddly enough, it's treated with a prescription strength form of folate- Deplin 15 Mg. I am thrilled and a little in awe to tell you I haven't had a 3 day, 3 week or 3 month depression in 3 years. I hope this info will be of help to you.

Where did you get the genetic testing done? I would love to do that. Did your dr have to refer you? Did you insurance pay for it? sorry for so many questions, this is just something i REALLY want to do!!

Hi Philly, I did the test through 23&Me. All the raw data is there so you have to check for genetic mutations yourself. Just type in MTHFR and up it comes up with all the anomalies. So it's NOT our fault that we have been depressed or had panic attacks or migraines. We were BORN with that tendency. It was such a relief. I wasn't selfish or an ingrate. It was in my genes. 15mg of l-methyl folate was my answer. Haven't had a depression in 3 years.

Re: TT (# 18) Expand Referenced Message

Oh my Gosh! I’m so sorry to be so late in replying. I don’t read my email as often as I should. Forgive me? You can get your DNA tested at 23andme. You don’t need a prescription. Be sure when you order your kit that it’s genetic testing just for your health profile. If you are interested in tracing your Ancestry, you can. It just costs more. 23andme does general health profiling which is very interesting. But the raw data is there. I checked MTHFR and sure enough, anomalies. I also have a genetic disease called Erythromelalgia which causes severe burning in my hands. SCN9A gene. So we’re not hypochondriacs. It’s right there in our DNA. I don’t know about you, but it sure did make me feel better. Good luck and stay cool.
