Need Help For Post Herpetic Neuralgia

Updated

Anyone know of a cream or compounded ointment for relief of severe pain from post herpetic neuralgia? I’ve suffered with this for 21 years now, down back of leg and around ankle and foot. I’m so tired of fighting the pain. I take gabapentin, tramadol, and amytriptline which help some, but the pain is alway there, stabbing and burning, making it difficult to wear clothing. This is so depressing I don’t even want to leave the house anymore.

Hello, Patti! I am so sorry about what you're dealing with, that's horrible.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any specific cream, or compounded cream that I can recommend, but you might want to ask your doctor about prescribing Lidocaine patches, or a compounded cream with Lidocaine in it, since it is a topical anesthetic. It is used frequently in people with your condition, but it does require a prescription.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for topical pain relief?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I’ve tried the lidoderm patches. They didn’t work well for me, I guess because of the location of the pain. The lidocaine cream helps a little when I first apply it, unfortunately it doesn’t help with the sensitivity to anything touching my leg. Still hoping something will be developed!

I would look into CBD salves to apply topically.

So, I read recently people reporting relief for the pain you are describing and arthritis pain, from bee stings. One person stated they had relief for 2 years. Seems worth a try.

Read this short article regarding post-herpetic nerve pain treatment. Vitamin C has been found to be effective. You would need to take big doses orally or go to an integrative or functional care Dr and show them the article. They may do the IV treatment for you. It must be horrible and you can’t keep taking all those other tabs forever. Cheers.

That's horrible, my heart goes out to you. The first thing I thought of though was perhaps you could obtain some sort of marijuana cream? Or the oil? Or smoke it? I don't partake myself but maybe it would help you. Best wishes to you.
