I noticed that there are other allergy products on the market which contain the same key ingredient as Visine LR called Oxymetazoline. The only thing is that they come as a nasal spray and the proportion of Oxymetazoline is a higher dose.
If you were to mix 2 parts Afrin with 1 part Eye Wash you would essentially dilute it from being 0.05%Oxymetazoline HCl to 0.025%, the same proportion as in the original Visine LR! Just be sure to mix it as accurately as possible (you can use the sterile cup included with the eye wash) and then place the mixture back into a sterile eye drop container which is empty.
Hopefully this will help some of you. Please exercise caution and proceed at your own risk. This is not intended to be medical advice. The above products are available over the counter and aren't expensive at all.
Mixing Afrin and Eye Wash to put in your eyes is a Bad Idea. While I'm OK with the general idea of equivalence and using off label, Afrin and Visine LR are NOT the same. Same active, sure, but the inactives aren't innocuous. Benzyl Alcohol, in your eye? Ever get beer in your eye? Stings like Hell is an understatement. And Lord knows what Povidone is. Folks, you really need to know what you're doing if you go this route. For example, Sominex and Benedryl are both the same active, and they are both oral, so that would be fine.
I ordered eye drops that are equivalent to Visine LR at CanadaPharmacy.com. It's called Visine Workplace and is exactly the same as the USA LR product. Ordered it last Wed and got it Monday in TX, and that was with standard shipping. Good Luck!
