Need New Pain Dr In Va. Dismissed After 20 Years When My Home Was Broken Into And Meds Stolen.

Updated

My primary care physician took over my pain management from Duke University 20 years ago. I have a SCI and was in a wheelchair for 14 years but by the Grace of God have been walking since September of 2008. My medical situation is extensive and i have had two surgeries in the past seven months and in may I will have an anterior/posterior spinal fusion from C5 to my tail one and will be in the hospital and rehab unit for two months. I have been on Neurontin, Methadone, Dilaudid and Fentanyl patches for 20 years. I NEVER abused my meds or asked for extra meds. I actually took less than I was supposed to. My home was broken into January 9th while my boyfriend and I were at my mother's home. My next door neighbor is an ex cop and heard the break-in occur and called it in and came running with his gun. The entire police department was in our house looking for the thug. When we arrived home two hours later to discover the break in and called the police, they told us what happened. We went through the house with the police later that night but didn't notice anything missing. Even had $200 in cash laying on my dresser. We, including the police, believed my neighbor scared the their off after he broke in the door but before he made it inside. I didn't realize until the next day that the lock box containing all my meds was taken. Only three people knew what and where the box was and two were confirmed at work. The police have the name of the suspect but can't prove he did it. When i notified my doctor and asked for meds to get me through the month since my scripts had just been filled on January 2nd, he stated he didn't believe there was even a break in and that i was making it up. WTF?!?! I was devastated by his reaction as I dearly loved and respected this man. He even had a copy of the police report which stated we weren't home at the time and my ex cop neighbor had called it in. He released me as a patient and gave me one month of fentanyl patches and nothing else. I will run out of patches in a couple of weeks and will go into life threatening withdrawls due to the amount of medications I have been on for 20 years. I'm also in severe pain without my other meds and can barely function. I NEED A DOCTOR IN VIRGINIA ASAP! Please help me!

no offense, but it really does sound like a crock. sounds like u take enough pain meds to be in a coma. if i had a dollar for every story i've read on here about meds being stolen out of homes, i'd have enough to put gas in my car for a month...try suboxone, your life will get so much easier...

@Dawn - sorry to hear about your troubles.

@Danielle - I disagree with your assumption. You may or may not be correct about the truth of the story but there is no way to know for sure. At least one could try to answer the original question.

With that said, it sounds like your doctor might have been facing heat or something. Their prescribing habits are monitored after all. Also, I don't see why they would have released you as a patient if you provided them with a valid police report. If you will be facing acute withdrawal symptoms as a result of their decision then I would seek legal advice. Especially assuming that you do have a police report, a valid prescription / history of taking such medications.

At this point you might decide to run a local search for Pain Management centers - however I would also recommend looking into your legal rights for proper treatment. I hope this helps and good luck!

Rude people aside with horrible grammar... I don't know the validity of your story, I'm not going to question it because it's not my place since I don't know you. But here's my advice.

I would get a copy of your police report, I would contact the physicians board and tell them what your doctor said and how he treated you. If you need to, maybe possibly ask this ex-cop neighbor of yours as a witness to the fact your medications were stolen and there is an investigation. File a complaint against your doctor. I would also contact your hospital (with the police report as proof) and tell them what your quandary is. They can usually point you in the directions of places that are willing to help you obtain your medication in a valid fashion. You might also be able to contact the companies that produce these medications and see if they can offer advice.

ER's will help you if you are not a known drug abuser or someone who is considered a 'revolving door' IE: someone who constantly goes to the ER and demands drugs.

After 1year of taking 120mg of methadone i went to my drs office last month to find a new dr.i was told he was let go. The new dr says you will no longer recive methadone and prescribed 2 20mg opanas a day.and had the balls to say they were equal. Not even close. Withdraw and cost are killing me. This should be illegal. Any comments.

OMG, I don't live in the US, but am from the UK now in France, and due to a hospital infection I have no hip joint, since '96. I'm on Fentanyl patches, 300mcg an hour. It seems so over controlled for pain relief there, that it's unbelievable.
I hope you do really hope you can get something sorted out. What do Dr.'s do when they get robbed, for their prescriptions, or medications? It does happen, even to the best of people. Narcotics are a much valued product, and often stolen. I've had my Fentanyl stolen and only "friends" in the house.
But I have a great doc, for the last 12 years, who trusts me, and has a special right to prescribe Fentanyl, only for cancer treatment here, normally.
I really hope you can get help, and through legal methods or whatever it takes. They do not have the right to let you suffer, even if there's no legal decision, doctors do have a moral obligation to help you.
As for people who don't believe you, don't take any notice, as surely a police report and investigation isn't undertaken lightly.
Good luck, and do take any means to arrange your treatment for good and all, with a specialist, as they are more reasonable in my experience. If you are in bad w/d you can surely go to a hospital, pain center or urgency treatment center?
Bye, and hang on in there, whatever.
