Naltrexone, L-dopa And 5-htp

Updated

I was recently prescribed 50mg Revia. I'm currently in the 25mg period with 4 days to go until I begin the full dosage. Before this, I was taking 125mg L-dopa/velvet bean extract (800mg) plus 400mg 5-HTP on a daily basis for my depression. It does WONDERS for my depression but now I have to take this opioid antagonist and I'm wondering if there will be a drug interaction even though I'm taking dopamine. The first night, I took everything together and experienced dizziness, tiredness, insomnia, confusion, racing-thoughts, muscle spasms and increased thirst. I stopped taking the supplements and just take the Revia at night and haven't experienced anything but increased thirst and awesome sleep. I don't know too much about neurotoxicity but I know enough to know it's no joke, I'm wondering if that first night I was having a dangerous reaction and if I could/should continue taking my supplements. Can anyone shed light on this?

I didn't find any problems listed between them, but it must be noted that supplements aren't actually studied for interactions with prescription medications, so there's a chance some issues have no yet been documented. Thus, it would be best to consult your doctor to be sure, they may have more information based on the experience of other patients.

As to the Revia, the symptoms you've described can actually be side effects of it, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience tinnitus, abdominal pain and nausea.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi! Thank you for your reply. I decided to ask my doctor and she said that their aren't documented interactions but we both agreed to lower my dosage to 12.5mg. The side effects were a bit overwhelming. That awesome sleep was temporary, I went back to racing thoughts, sleeplessness, nausea, dizziness which lasted all day. She also advised to lower the dosage on my supplements as well since I'm in the adjustment phase of this new medication and now I take it in the morning. Iv'e also read that LDN (even though 12.5 isn't necessarily low dose) can help with depression so I'm wondering if the supplements are even needed at this point.
