I have got fatty and enlarged liver.I was alcoholic since last 10 years. My daily consumption was 6 to 7 pegs. I have stopped taking alcohol since last 2 years. Recently due to some other problem I am under the treatment of a fameous gastroenterologist in Kolkata. He has prescribed me NUSAM 400 Mg 1 tab thrice daily alongwith other medicines (tab Razo 20 mg,Pentasa 500 mg etc.). Now I want to know the following:1) How long I have to take NUSAM 400? 2) Is there any side effect of NUSAM 400? Is there any alternative cheaper medicine equevalent to Nusam 400?

Hello Birendra,

Based on my research, NUSAM 400 is a nutritional supplement that contains the active ingredient S-Adenosyl methionine (ademetionine, AdoMet, SAM, SAMe, SAM-e).

In the United States and Canada, SAM is sold as a nutritional supplement under the marketing name SAM-e (also spelled SAME or SAMe; pronounced "sam ee" or "Sammy"). SAM is also marketed under the Gumbaral, Samyr, Adomet, Heptral, Agotan, Donamet, Isimet and Admethionine brand names as a prescription drug approved in Russia, Italy, and several countries within the European Union. Some research, including multiple clinical trials, has indicated taking SAM on a regular basis may help fight depression, liver disease, and the pain of osteoarthritis. All other indications are not yet proven.

How to take:

SAM is best absorbed on an empty stomach. Enteric-coated tablets packaged in foil or foil blister packs increase stability and improve absorption. SAM should be stored in a cool, dry place to prevent deterioration.

Adverse effects:

Gastrointestinal disorder, dyspepsia and anxiety can occur with SAM consumption. Long-term effects are unknown. SAM is a weak DNA-alkylating agent.

I hope this information helps!

You ask your dr how he has prescribed NUSAM as it has not been approved in Liver diseases. The salt used in that brand is approved for Orthos and Neuros. The salt which is approved in liver diseases is SD4 salt of ademetionine( or s adenosylmethionine) which is not with that brand.
