Nsaid

I took one of these Zomax in 1981 at the age of 19. I immediately became hot and passed out. By the time,my parents got me to the ER, I only had a pulse under my tongue. They had to shock me. I was obviously ok, however, they told me to never ever take another NSAID (anti-inflammatory) again. Now later in life, I need some NSAIDS for arthritis. Has anyone else who had a reaction taken any other types of these drugs since then? I am scared to put a Tylenol in my mouth due to this experience.

With your history, you need to see a rheumatologist. There are many options for arthritic patients these days. A specialist is best to outline your options in consideration of your history.

everyone has to see a specialist for simple problems that even a senior medical student can take care of! go to a good G.P. or F.P. if you need a specialst because he/she can't figure out the problem, you'll be refered to a spec. The cost of medical care is so huge because everyone wants a specialist. A rheumatologist is for probs. a G.P. can't figure out like lupus, scleroderma, lyme disease, and other exotic causes of arthritis, not simple sh(t.

Yes, you definitely need to consult a doctor.

There are some options on the market that aren't NSAIDs that may help you, but only a doctor will be able to help you discover what is safe for you to use.

However, Zomax does not contain any NSAIDs, Zomax is a name brand for the antibiotic Azithromycin.

Are you sure what drug it was that you had the reaction to?

Additionally, the Acetaminophen in Tylenol is not an NSAID.

Zomax is the name of the NSAID being referred to. I went into anaphylactic shock after taking it monthly for about a year. It was pulled off the market by the FDA after a number of deaths; the maker was sued and the case files are sealed to the public. Perhaps the antibiotic that you are thinking of is Zithromax?

My apologies, you are correct. The original medication under the brand name was an NSAID, it contained the active ingredient Zomepirac, it was discontinued in 1983.

That's why the brand name was able to be reused.

Have you tried any of the alternatives, such as the Cox-2 inhibitors?

They are related, but not directly NSAIDs.

When I was a young man of 25, I was taking Motrin for root canal pain and at it's max dosage, had no relief and excruiating pain. My follow up was in 2 days!!! After the first day, my wife suggested taking one of her Zomax, which she said was the first and only drug that completely relieved her of crippiling monthly menstruals cramps. I took one and within 5 minutes all my pain was gone! I had absolutely no side effects and felt great, not uphoric or anything like that, just pain free. This was 1981 or 82 and so my Dentist wrote me a prescription as I had more dental work scheduled. I have however had the same sudden blackouts you have mentioned, years before taking Zomax and which took 10 years and several doctors before being diagnosed by a passing Surgeon while at work... The condition was low-blood sugar or Hypoglycemia. The opposite end of the diabetic scale where eating a sugar-rich diet (soda and pop tart for breakfast) caused an Insulin reaction, but only when I worked thru my lunch hour. How wrong were these doctors before the diagnosis. Sometimes I only got fever, nausea and incapacitated.

My suggestion for your joint pain is try EDTA, a harmless amino acid, government tested on the military and millions of citizens for gentle purging of toxic and heavy metals and safely dissolving of calcium buildup in blood vessels and all joints as well as the vascular system called (plaque). Which is a major cause of most joint pain, high blood pressure, heart disease, and things related to blood circulation

Dabug1, I had a serious reaction to Zomax (chills, vomiting, diarrhea, hives), but I've been able to take other pain relievers without incident. I've used Tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen, vicodin--never had a problem. I will say, though, that I make sure I'm with others when I try a new drug--just in case there's another disaster.

I have a similar history and a negative experience with Zomax which nearly killed me! NSAID's are out of the question as I have bad reactions! After being on Methadone, Morphine, Cymbalta, Flexeril along with extra strength Tylenol (together) I finally was given a prescription for a TENS DEVICE , which helps immensely .

I had bad reaction to zomax in the 80s also. Now if i take any amount of anti inflamatories i end up curled up in a ball crying in pain. It locks up every joint in my body resulting in severe pain through out my body for hours. Make sure if you have this issue you put anti inflamatories at the front of your allergy list. Trust me you dont want an er to give you an anti inflamatory shot.
