My Husbands Meds Being Changed

Updated

my husband has cancer and also has severe back pain due to many surgeries. He has taken 3 80 ml oxy three times a day. He was recently put on hospice and changed to 2 20 ml methadon twice a day and 1 once a day plus 30ml oxy for breakthrough. He dosent seem to be getting the relief he needs but the nurse insist that is plenty. He also seems to be suffering from withdrawals. Should I be concerned with the dosage change of his meds?

Yes, if he's not getting adequate pain relief, then of course you should be concerned. There is no reason for them to restrict him, if he has a possibly terminal illness, the DEA doesn't even recommend such for those with possibly terminal cancer.

It has been proven, via various studies detailed by the NIH, that it does not hasten death, but provides the comfort someone needs.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Have you tried speaking to his doctors? I know of many people that take far higher doses, who aren't suffering from cancer.

I'm sorry, I don't want to see short, or that I'm upset with you or anything, it's just that this type of thing really upsets me.

I understand needing to get better control of the narcotic/opiate supply, to try to prevent so much abuse and such, but there are exceptions for very good reasons.

I am so sorry that you're dealing with all of this.
