My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 3)

Updated

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

I've been on 1mg Xanax twice a day for panic attacks and recently moved to the Orlando , FL area from SC. Now no Dr down here will prescribe my medication and I'm in pure hell in a place where I don't know anyone. How can professional Drs do this to people? I tried Buspsar and it did nothing. Pls help!

People should 'get strong'! Don't go to a doctor or get prescriptions for atleast a month or two. The gov. will have to take notice along with the docs and pharms.-people are sick of being abused by the way they treat us. Before long this sh** will have to stop. Go after greedy docs and addicts on meth. but leave decent people alone and their private relationships with their docs!!! This place is worse than europe!

No Judy as in that month you can die if you stop. Not good advice?

whew! Doc finally figured out I need xanax! I think he was testing me...not nice.....anyway i'm on it till i die most likely and my only anxiety now comes from worrying that he'll retire and i will have to go thru this process all over again

Going through the process was too much. Not that I have ever had a Doctor refuse my request for Xanax in limited amounts, but I got tired, so very tired of chasing this drug so I stopped, and almost passed away. Never abused Xanax though it can abuse you!

Dawn this is potentially very serious. Without over reacting there is a chance you can become quite sick and have a seizure or a stroke. Doctors are for the most part unaware of the dangers of Alprazolam. They know about its addictive properties, but most are not very familiar with withdrawal. Plus it sounds like your Doctors office is playing games with your life. Visit the ER within the next week if you get too sick, and I would just show up at your Doctors office. If you make too much of a problem however the Doctor might take you off the medicine you need. Cold Turkey withdrawal with long term use is the worst thing that ever happened to me!

Dawn, I have a new message to you awaiting approval!

Dawn might be Gone, but always be careful with Alprazolam on the way out. Cold Turkey is tough!

Is ANYBODY out there from FL and knows why the Drs are trying to KILL me? I'm now in Ocala....very small town....and have called every single psychiatrist. The very FIRST appt that I could get as a new patient is MONTHS from now (and that is just for a consult, not even to see a Dr! Then they may give me a Dr appt weeks from then. I feel like a different girl without taking xanax. The panic attacks are terrible and I'm SO skinny. What can I do?????

Wow what a stupid response. You can start to feel flu like symptoms and many other withdrawal symptoms after just a few hours if you don't have your medication.

What a great thread. A little surprised with some advice given, but as a reminder all advice given here is from the forum on the Internet, not a Doctor.

Too many people are taking large doses of Alprazolam (>3 mg) When I first posted here I was in disbelief of the new laws in certain areas. I have never had problems obtaining Xanax, with the occasional you need to see a Psychiatrist, but as you age you hear that less, except for the areas that require it. In the meantime if you are prescribed this medicine do not stop, and without Doctor Shopping it is in your best interest to stock up on this medicine if you are able to. My Doctor who was my treating Doctor in the Hospital doubled my supply in 2011. I now have 20 spare bottles of 90 bars. While they're hidden well, it even creeps me out. Plus now I take less, not having to worry about Xanax seeking which can cause much anxiety.

My son and my daughter are both on xanax.I hate the drug.It is so addicting and the bad part is you get so you need more of it to get the same results. My son and my daughter both go to the same DR.He will not up their dose and they are both having sweating spells are very anxious. No one should ever be even put on this drug.I went to my DR and asked for something to help me and told her i did not want anything i would get addicted to.She gave me lorazapam which is like xanax .She told me she would not percribe it to me if i were younger because i would keep needing bigger and bigger doses.I then interrupted her and said right,I won't live long enough to reach that stage. She then told me i should just take it twice a week and i would not become addicted.I am 72 yrs old by the way.My son and my daughter both are already having withdrawal symptoms and it is because they need a bigger dose and so i am just trying to warn people of the dangers of taking this drug unless you are like me and do not have enough time left to need bigger doses.

Generally you don't get withdrawal symptoms until after you withdraw. I had a years worth of Lorazapam that I recently threw away. I did not like it at all so I stopped after running out my stored Xanax. Almost died!

the doctor does face serious repercussions if something happens to you, don't listen to this person. I work for appeals and grievances at a huge medical insurance company. Federal law mandates that a doctor not give the medication if they haven't seen you, a new prescription, etc. the doctor took a oath to DO NO HARM. withdrawals are very serious. the doctor should have given you enough meds to either 1. taper off slowly or 2. until they were able to see you again. I've seen providers fined and extreme cases stripped of their licenses for violating their oaths.
and btw, you don't fit the model of drug seeking behavior. Symptoms of withdrawal include mood and behavior changes, emotional instability, etc.
good luck.

"Symptoms of withdrawal include mood and behavior changes, emotional instability"...

I don't know Lola as I didn't notice any of those symptoms? Each day features a new set of symptoms, and it was funny in a way, wild hallucinations! You know what is wrong because it is such a horrible thing to go through. I thought if I went to the ER and mentioned anything about Xanax or a withdrawal they would not take it seriously and let me go. That wasn't the case as I was dying, all readings and all tests came out wrong. The Doctor was amazed I could carry on a conversation as I was called "walking Critical". About the only thing I didn't have was a seizure or stroke during this adventure!

It's bs that dr's do this! I was forced to go cold turkey by my primary in feb this yr due to not getting into a psycho dr's office in time. During this time I've had the worst panic attacks I've ever experienced, horrific mood swings, suicidal thoughts and much more....nobody will help me! Hospitals send me away because they think I'm some junkie... I've been on Xanax for 3 yrs and for my dr to put my life and the lives of others in danger is unethical!!!! I wish is just die but I have a husband and 4 children that need me...if I were alone I'd already be gone!!!!!!

yes it is very scary RockQueen. My Daughter did have a seizure when she was taken off hers cold turkey. She was not totally taken off of it but the dose was dropped too a much lower dose.Since then she has had another seizure. She is still very sick and is on antiseizure medication. She was told not to drive and to avoid loud music and bright lights. Her life has been ruined unless by some miracle she gets well.I am praying fot that.

im planning on takinx xanax the rest of my life ,going off it is too ugly.been on and off for 15 yrs averging 2 mg a day .i know it will burn out my liver kidney function eventually but i already have brain damage from it and i suffer other terminal diseases wich will probably result in death within a few yrs .i wont do anti depressants anti manics or even tylenol or ibuprofen. its actually worse.morphine was easier to stop then benzos ! again i will just take it for life ;maybe hav 5 yrs left or so.

its also safer than alchohol but similiar [xanax] i really need 3-6 mg a day but on two.
my doc is hesitant to up dose because he knows ... i respect that but just let me have the stuff till im dead .WTF
how common is death with xanax if not abused? and how long?
i would rather take xanax than lithium or depakote too[fare more toxic]

too bad i cant just go get the s*** at7-11 .
american medical really is corrupt and crooked

okay, if you want to stretch out ur xanax supply just eat or drink pure grapefruit! 1 mg with gfruit equals about efeects of 3 mg! u didnt hear this from me.

in 55 years old and stopped ALCHOHOL WHEN I WAS 25. it scares me to think of resorting to this as a last resort BUT if you are dependendant on benzos or barbituates and run out cold turkey YOUR GONNA HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS . side effects COUD BE HEART ATTACK DEATH OR STROKE! ALCHOHOL will keep you alive a little longer and prevent seizures but its nothing but trouble also even though LEGAL im still shaking all day long and can not taper down or off completely.
at least im not on crank crack or junk disability sucks! MEDICAL MARIJUANA IS A POSSIBILITY OF GETTING OFF XANAX 4 EVER but requires pretty high doses]expensive and only quasi legal ... wow LIFE,

Medial Marijuana is not the answer. I smoke lots of it. More Xanax is not the answer. The real danger doesn't exist with taking the drug, it is when you discontinue it!

All these ppl talking about how it makes you look like a drug seeker for calling the Dr more than once are f***ing clueless and if the dr thinks that then they have no business writing a prescription for benzos. Xanax makes your anxiety 10 times worse. I'd be more worry if he didnt follow up with Dr. Bc if he's not having anxiety about not having his medicine then I'm 99% he's selling them. I was on 6 mg a day for 12 years and have nnothing but sympathy for you. Just know there is alternatives to xanax.
