Multaq & Afib

Updated

I was started on Multaq after ablation got my heart to beat normally. I has previously been in Afib 62% of every day. The ablation did not last very long and I am again in Afib most of the time. My doctors want me to continue the Multaq just the same. My only symptom is fatigue.

Multaq contains the active ingredient Dronedarone and it is used to treat irregular heartbeat, including Atrial Fibrillation and your doctor probably wants you to continue taking it, because they fear worsening or your condition, if you stop.

In addition, a sudden withdrawal of these types of medications, that affect heart function, can result in rebound effects, which could cause your condition to worsen and put you in life threatening danger.

Some background first......

My Afib started about 8 months ago after I was put under and received dye and steroid injections right before I was to get an MRI for my hip afterwards.

My heart has been healthy and strong until that day. After the injections while under my heart went erratic and they had to lower it. The doctor did not look at the meds I was on to check for drug interactions. I checked what had injected and found that 2 of the injections warned not to use them with someone taking an MAOI antidepressant, which I had been on for 25 years with no problems, until the injections. Two of the injections had the warning that said they can cause erratic heart beat and Arrhythmia. That's when it all started for me.

Yeah, probably could have sued but I'm not that type of person.

So anyway I was recently put on Multaq for Lone Afib after trying a few other drugs that really didn't work. I was getting attacks a few times a week

It's been about three months now and I haven't had the slightest hint of Afib, my life is normal again!

The one thing I did learn from my own experience and some others here, is that you must take Multaq for at least "two weeks" before it fully kicks in. You'll notice some small changes during the first two weeks but it takes two weeks to fully work.

I mention the above because my doctor, nor the directions say anything about the two week period. I also searched all over the net and found nothing on the effective time period for taking Multaq.

Do not expect it to take effect in a few days etc., stay on it for at least two weeks or you will never know if it works or not.

Gary, thank you for posting that information, it is much appreciated and I am sure it will be a great help to others that are searching for information.

And you are correct, most doctors, pharmacists and the drug monographs don't tell you that it does take time for medications, of this nature, to start having an effect in the body, while they do start doing a little, when you first start taking them, it requires regular use, over a period of time for them to really start working.

Most medications will hit their peak effectiveness at around 4 to 6 weeks of use. A person using them can usually tell, because that is also the time that any side effects your experiencing will hit their peak in severity, before starting to taper off.

I have been taking Multaq for about three months. My concern is, I had knee replacement and my hip is in a lot of pain. He gave me a cortisone inj today for my pain. Before Multaq I had those in my knees. I'm just concerned, may this cause my heart to go into afib?

I have tachycardia and my heart beat goes up very high. I take multaq twice a day. No side effects. I still have some fast heart beats but not as bad.
