Moving To Florida

Updated

As most of you here, I've been taking MS Contin 60 mg and Oxycodone IR for break through among other meds of course. I have had RSD/CRPS for 26 years and Lupus for about 5 years. I live in PA now and never really considered the ramifications of moving to a state with such pain med issues. Due to job loss I've had to reschedule my meds taking fewer of them and being in worse pain. I don't want to find just a prescribing doctor. I want to continue my treatment. Any advice?

I moved back to Panama City Beach, FL, in 2012 after moving away in 2003. In TN, where we moved from, I was on Hydrocodone 10/325 and Opana, so 2 opiates. When I moved here, the first neurologist I saw told me that she didn't like to give 2 opiates at the same time. So, I suffered through the pain for the first 5 months I was here, until I worked up enough courage to seek another doctor.

My point in that story is to say that it is going to depend on which doctor you see. Some are willing to follow the regimen you are used to, and some will try and change everything because they don't know you. - I was with my dr. in TN for 8 years. He saw me suffering and did whatever he could to help me. The first dr. here, saw me suffering and didn't care. The first dr. was in a private practice and my new neurologists' office has 8 different doctors in it and they rotate the patients every 3 months, however, they all, until my last appt. last week, kept me on "my schedule." On my last appt., I was told that there were new regulations on MS Contin so he decreased my dose from 3-15mg/day down to 2-15mg per day.

I was actually online searching for any "new regulations" when I found this forum - but, I haven't found anything about it yet so I'm wondering if what he told me was true :\

@Sammy,

Sorry to hear about your situation in PA. I heard that the areas in and around Florida were experiencing similar issues, but didn't realize it spread up north as well. Post #1 makes a good point though about each doctor being different in how they approach your medication needs. I would just recommend having all your medical records in hand to support your story on why you need to have what you've been used to taking. However, the idea that some doctors will be more or less willing to continue your regimen is worth contemplating in order to determine how flexible you're willing to be with what they might counteroffer you. I wish you the best of luck!

@momof3dearones,

I have yet to come across any new regulations concerning the use of MS Contin. One would think that this information would be made public for all pain patients, but I would encourage you to kindly ask your doctor for a copy of the "new rules" since it's something that affects the quality of your care. That's just what I would do anyways. Thanks for sharing your story by the way. I hope you manage to get everything sorted out!
