Moms Alergic To Penicillin Can She Take Amoxicillin?

My mom is allergic to penicillin but at the dentist they prescribed her amoxcillin although she let them know that she was allergic to it. Should she still take it?

Hi Amber,

Just so you're aware, the Mayoclinic states not to take Amoxicillin if you have an allergy to Penicillin. They also controversially note that even if you are allergic to Penicillin, "you may be (but are not necessarily) allergic to other types of Penicillin or cephalosporins."

My personal opinion is that going with a hit or miss approach to what might be safe, probably is not worth the risk since the two drugs are so closely related. [Amoxicillin is reportedly a semi-synthetic version of Penicillin].

I'd encourage you to show the dentist any material you can print out if not for the sake of saving future patients from unnecessary harm.
